We can hardly believe that after all the weeks and months of planning, camp is finally here and we are already finished with week 1!! We are having a GREAT time with your children!! Each week, you will get a newsletter from us telling you about what has been happening on the 5th and 6th floors and giving you an even closer look at what happens each day at camp. We were SO impressed with how well everyone worked through separation this week - a HUGE high five to all of our campers who opened themselves up to the new experiences that camp has to offer and a BIG congratulations to the grown-ups who made it through!! Thank you for trusting us with your children! We are so enjoying getting to know each of them and seeing their faces light up at the pool, in the classrooms and in the various specialty areas. ISRAELI CULTURE SEARCHING FOR… LOTS of Newspapers ! There will be a box in the 5th floor lobby where we will be collecting it. Thanks for any contributions!! This week, we began by singing "Boker Tov" (Good Morning) to one another. We chatted about the Israeli flag and the American flag, creating a list of their similarities and differences. The children had an opportunity to create their own blue and white flags for Israel. As they passed materials to one another, they practiced using our Hebrew Word of the Week: todah (thank you). Before saying shalom (goodbye), we played freeze dance to upbeat Israeli music! Shabbat Shalom, Lauren Visiting Day We have scheduled a visiting day for each group during the summer. Each child may have two adult guests (no siblings, please). The following is a list of each class’ visiting day schedule: Tuesday, July 12th Orange Room— 11:30 am Green Room— 12:15 pm Thursday, July 14th Blue Room—9:00 am Purple Room—11:30am Yellow Room—12:15 pm Looking forward to seeing you then! YELLOW Submarines The Yellow Submarines are off to a great splash. We had such a fun filled first week of camp. Everyone has been enjoying activities and getting to know their counselors. New friendships have started to blossom and we cannot wait to see how they grow. The week was off to a great start in Israeli Culture with Lauren. Lauren showed us a picture of the Israeli flag and we all created our own blue and white Israeli flags to fly high in the sky! We also worked up a sweat by playing freeze dance to Israeli music and learned a new word, “Todah”, which means thank you. With the hot summer days, everyone had fun getting wet and cooling off in the swimming pool and sprinklers on the roof. The fun didn't stop there! To go with our Yellow room, we all made yellow collages. We used different yellow materials and glued them on black paper. The children took such pride in their work. Come in and check out their amazing work! On Tuesday and Thursday we had music with Eliana. We sang different name songs to learn all our new friends' names. On Wednesday, we all put on our chefs hats and made snickerdoodles. The smell was amazing! During snack we all got to try the yummy cookies. Thursday we had so much fun dressing up for costume day. All the children got to show off their costumes during meeting time. As the week came to a close, we celebrated our first Shabbat together as a group. It was such a special time in the Yellow room. Shabbat Shalom, Melanie, Yael and Dina GREEN Grapes We had a great 1st week together in The Green Grapes! We have really enjoyed getting to know one another by singing new name songs such as "Around and Around is the Name of the Game" and "Get Up and Dance". We usually begin our day with an activity time where the children explore the different areas of the classroom. Many of the children like to build in the block center with different building materials such as blocks, trains, legos, magnatiles, and many more. Others enjoy working on puzzles, playing cooperative games, using table top manipulatives, making jewelry with beads and pipe cleaners, making pizza and different shapes with our fresh new green play dough, playing with the babies in the dramatic play corner, coloring, and doing various projects at the art table. The Green Roomers did a special green collage project to honor our room’s color! They used different materials such as dot art, markers, crayons, feathers, pom poms, yarn, foam shapes, and paper to create a green masterpiece! These projects are hanging on our bulletin board in the classroom; come check them out! Another highlight of the week was making green slime! The children helped pour the glue and other ingredients to make a stretchy, sticky, bouncy substance. They had a blast playing with it when it was done! The children look forward to a quick meeting everyday where we review the schedule of our day, sing songs and learn new finger plays such as "sticky sticky bubble gum". The children are already pros with reading the schedule out loud as a class! We then move on to swim. The children were very eager to get right in the pool and show the swim teachers their skills. They all already know how to sit on the side and kick their legs to make a splash, safely enter and exit the water, blow bubbles, and kick their legs using a kick board. The Green Roomers have been busy bees this week with all of the different specials! We had music with Eliana 2 times this week, which was a blast! The children enjoyed singing and dancing to different songs including their favorite "How We Got to Camp". We also had Israeli Culture with Lauren where we made our very own Israeli flags. On Wednesday we had Movement with Danielle where we got to move around the room like different animals. Friday we celebrated Shabbat by singing some Shabbat songs and making the blessings over the candles, grape juice and challah. We cannot believe we already finished the first week of camp! We are looking forward to an amazing second week! Have a wonderful weekend and Shabbat Shalom, Jillian, Rachellie, and Zoe Ka-BLUE-y As our first week of camp draws to a close, none of us can believe how quickly the packed days are flying by. It’s amazing that it’s only been a week since we got together for our open camp prelude Sunday; since, the joy of crafts projects and cityscapes imagined by towers of blocks has flourished. On our first day together, we jumped right in, enjoying healthy snacks and learning a song about our love for bananas. We enjoyed Israeli Culture and created Israeli flags that would make Herzl proud. We had our first Shabbat and learned the blessings, then enjoyed challah by the handful with our new friends. We also made it into Central Park for our own special sports time, where we worked on our fancy footwork and danced around on the lush green lawn. But the highlight of each day is our time upstairs, where we swim two times a day. Children have been working hard on their skills in the morning, blowing bubbles and kicking with legs straight, while the afternoon swim time has been dedicated to making friends and having the time of our lives. While singing songs and learning about Israeli culture has been a treat, it’s been our time bonding with each other in the blue room that has been most fun, from creating bracelets and art in the morning to playing Funny Bunny and exploring the room during activity time in the afternoon. Our song repertoire has begun to grow, and we carry the tunes with us up onto the roof, where under a slather of sunscreen we swing across the monkey bars, frolic through the sprinklers, and practice our dunking in the pool. Looking forward to a fabulous second week. Shabbat shalom, Josh, Elli and Sarah PURPLE Pandas Summer is off to a great start for the Purple Pandas! We had a fabulous first week getting to know our new friends, our teachers, and our class mascot, Penny the Panda. The Pandas began to feel right at home in the Purple room: exploring puzzles and books, playing in the dramatic play corner, and making creations with purple play-doh! On Monday we had our first Israeli Culture session, where we grooved to Hebrew songs and learned how to say good morning in Hebrew—Boker tov! The fun continued on Tuesday when we had our first swim; the Pandas had a blast splashing around in the cool water. During Music on Tuesday the Pandas learned some new songs and dances: we drove our cars to school and swam like little fish. More animal fun was in store on Wednesday when the Pandas showed off their moves like monkeys, elephants, and butterflies during Movement! We loved seeing all of the Pandas’ creative costumes on Thursday, and enjoyed sipping delicious purple smoothies. Our action-packed week came to a close with our first Shabbat in the Purple room; the Pandas recited the blessings together before enjoying a Shabbat treat of grape juice and challah. Yum! We cannot wait for more fun in the Purple room next week. Panda Parents Check-in: As we get into the swing of things, just a reminder that Pandas should come to camp in their swimsuits each day (if toileting allows), with a fresh towel, pool shoes and change of clothes in their bag. Your Panda’s cubby should be stocked with extra undies/pull-ups, a change of clothes, and a sunblock. Please label all items! Finally, please sign up for a day to bring healthy snack to share with the class. Sign-up sheet is posted on the small board outside of the Purple room. Thank you! Shabbat Shalom, Hillary, Ari and Nikki IMPORTANT REMINDER… Please label EVERYTHING!! This includes clothing, towels, food containers, water shoes, lunch boxes, etc. Thank you!! The children have been having so much fun getting to know their new camp mates by singing wonderful name game songs and enjoying all the great camp activities like swimming, imagination playground and music! During swimming the children each get to learn and practice their swimming skills while having a great time splashing with their friends. During music we get to learn new songs and follow along with Eliana on guitar. Our little goldfish have been putting together orange collages, painting on the easels and even enjoying a special costume day. We had batman, superman, a butterfly a princess and a surgeon join us! We also made our own airplanes this week out of Popsicle sticks as we talked about travel and the various ways there are to reach different places. Your vacation photos really helped make this weeks topic more relatable so thank youthey now adorn our family photo wall! For Shabbat, the children made their own airplane shaped sugar cookies with some orange sprinkles. Our little bakers love helping to add the ingredients, mixing them together, and of course enjoying the final product! We can't wait for the excitement to continue next week!
