Summer 2009 / Issue 2 newsletter Demolition of Sir John Hawkins Way flyover You will have noticed that work has now started on site in Sir John Hawkins Way car park. Breheny’s, our civil engineering contractors, have already made much progress with the temporary bus route. You will be able to see the work as you walk by in the High Street. Once the temporary bus-route is in place bus timetables could change. However traffic will not be allowed to turn into Medway Street from Globe Lane. Blue and white signs will be displayed allowing buses, taxis and cycles through but no permission will be given to general traffic and pedestrians. It will be an offence to ignore these signs and this will be enforced by the police. On Monday 29 June the flyover will permanently be closed to general traffic. Demolition of the flyover will take place once the temporary bus route has been completed and will start with the removal of the middle section (which crosses the High Street). Access to businesses will be retained and we will be writing to affected premises with regard to deliveries. Signs will also be installed at either end of the High Street to give you more information. The contractors will crush the concrete on site and the materials will be recycled where possible for use on the new bus-route. n The temporary bus route construction is under way n Blue and white signs allowing access for buses, taxis and cycles only n preparation work starts on the flyover in Chatham High Street Manor Road Work has gone ahead to re-kerb and pave the bottom section of Manor Road leading into the High Street. Manor Road will eventually re-open to enable access to local traffic but will not be intended for through-traffic. Temporary traffic signals will be installed either side of Manor Road/ High Road on the temporary route giving priority to buses. By the end of the 2009, the upper end of the High Street will have benefitted from complete re-paving. Traffic lights will remain at the junction of Globe Lane and Medway Street due to the crossing at Military Road. Existing pedestrian routes will be maintained. Trailer exhibition Over 1,700 people visited our exhibition trailer during March which showed that there was a high level of interest in the proposals. The Regeneration Ambassadors joined staff from Medway Renaissance to inform the public about the demolition of the flyover, the new vehicle routes and the proposed new location of the bus station. We aim to repeat the exercise towards the end of the year to provide more information to the public, of the works at Union Street and the Brook. Why is the bus-station being taken out of the Pentagon? A. In 2004 approval was obtained for the Pentagon Development Brief and as part of the Brief, it was agreed that the relocation of the bus-station provides an opportunity to review and consolidate the floorspace within the existing building. The existing bus station and its current facilities are very poor, with limited information and a poor waiting environment. Q. What is happening to the Paddock? A. Part of the Paddock is required for the bus station layout and as part of the proposals, areas of high quality open space will be created and replacement additional trees will be planted. Q. What facilities will there be in the new bus-station? A. Real-time and ticket information, weather-proofing waiting areas. Construction will begin early 2010, subject to planning approval and will take approximately one year to build and landscape. The new facility will house all bus operators.
