Mt. Tanzawa in Japan
used to be a tropical volcanic island.
Evidence1
Many coral fossils

Foraminifer

Evidence4
Tuff with lava
Plate

Active fault
Mr. Kadota who is the prefectural museum curator and his team have discovered some evidence which means Japanese
geological theory has been changed.
We will show you four examples in this report.

Mt. Tanzawa Kanagawa
The Philippine Ocean plate
The Pacific Ocean plate
Previously, Mt.Tanzawa was located southern area than now.

1.
First Evidence
Heliopora are living in the ocean above in the blue area. Although this wild life coral reef can be found in the Okinawa prefectural area in
Japan, it can’t survive around the main Honshu island. Recently, however, fossils of many Heliopora were discovered in Central Japan in Kanagawa
prefecture - red point- as well as other many coral reef fossils and Nautilus pompilius as pictured below
Favia speciosa
4
Stylophora postillate
Platygra sp
5
Fungia sp
Aturia cubaensis

Q1 In what kind of area can we find these fossils?
In a deep valley named River Minase in Mt.Tanzawa. We can find many fossils in the rocks. But it can be hard to find these, because there are so
many limeformation. Most people even researchers may over look discovering them.
Heliopora
fossils

So many
Heliopora fossils can be found.
Colonial coral had grown.
Then they were transfermed
to
limestons. These rocks are all
limestones not mudstones.
They were traveled from the south
on the moving of the plate.
There are no fragment of limestone
is to become a its evidence.
Most
prominet
rock
which
includes
Heliopora is estimated about 5000kg. Such
huge modern Heliopora reefs cannot be
seen
otherwise
going
to
Okinawa
prefecture’s ocean.

2.
Second
Evidence
Foraminifer
Nepholepidina fossils which is living surrounded coral reef can be discovered with Heriopora and other coral reef fossils.
This type of Nepholepidina had been living the south.of the ocean 15-million years ago, according to age determination.
This shows Mt.Tanzawa used to be the south 15-million years ago.

3.
Third
Evidence
Tuff with lava
Tuff which contains fragment of lava
Huge Pillow lava
These examples means Mt.Tanzawa use to be a volcanic island.

4.
Fourth
Plate
Evidence
boundary
Mt. Tanzawa Kanagawa
And Izu islands
The Philippine Ocean plate
The Pacific Ocean plate
11
Plate boundary so called Kannawa active fault, which indicates
Philippine ocean plate have continued to push together, folding
uplifting to form mountain.
This movement forced to move Mt.Tanzawa from the south.
Main island side of Japan
Mr.kadata and his assistants
are researching the fault.
