Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a day for remembering. We honor the soldiers who died
for our country. In my town, the day is filled with traditions. The most
important thing we do is decorating graves at the local cemetery. We put flags
and flowers on the soldiers’ graves. Then the mayor gives a speech. He talks
about what the soldiers did for the country. It makes us think about how we
can help our country.
Next, there is a parade down Main Street. Soldiers march in front. Boy
Scouts and Girl Scouts carry banners. Next come the people who fought in
wars. Some walk, and some ride in wheelchairs. Everyone cheers for them. As
the flag passes, people, including children, put their hands on their hearts. We
think about the brave soldiers who died.
Then we have a town picnic. At the picnic, we listen to an inspiring
speech. It is the famous Gettysburg Address. Abraham Lincoln gave the speech
to honor soldiers who died in the Civil War. After the speech, we sing our
favorite songs about America.
The day helps everyone remember the past. It makes us grateful to the
people who fought for our country.
