If you need a taxi, one can be hailed in front of the building. For
excellent access to many points in the region, use the Metro, one
of the nation’s finest. The closest Metro stop is the Farragut West
station, which is located just one block from our building at 17th and
I Street. Please ask the front desk team for guidance on navigating

where to eat now—
ten restaurants that matter
8
Washington, DC offers many fine dining choices—such
a large number that one can feel overwhelmed in trying
to choose. Below (in no particular order) are ten of
our current favorites, ten restaurants that consistently
deliver some of the best experiences in the region.
Founding Farmer’s 1924 Pennsylvania Avenue NW · 202.822.8783
wearefoundingfarmers.com
Founding Farmer’s is a sprawling, eco-conscious restaurant in DC’s
Foggy Bottom, where barnyard chic meets industrial garage. This
two-story dining room with weathered-wood accents and shelves
of pickled peaches and corn has been playing to overflow crowds
since it opened in the International Monetary Fund building.
BLT Steak 1625 I Street NW · 202.689.8999 · bltsteak.com
BLT Steak breaks free of convention and makes those
manly clubs where politicos order mammoth steaks seem
fusty and old. This is a steakhouse that gestures at formal
seriousness (two-tone leather-and suede booths) without
veering toward the uptight. Or just call it a French sensibility;
the owner and overseer is New York chef Laurent Tourondel.
2 Amy’s Pizza
3715 Macomb Street NW Washington, DC · 202.885.5700
2amyspizza.com
Airy and friendly (and packed) Neapolitan-style pizza joint and wine
bar with a twist. Chef/owner Peter Pasta, who also owns Obelisk
in DuPont Circle, produces the crispest, thinnest, most sparsely
topped Neapolitan wood-oven pizza around and ups the culinary
ante with well-sourced slummier plates, which might include such
delectable’s as lomo (cured pork loin) and piacentinu ennesse, a
saffron-scented Sicilian sheep’s-milk cheese.
Bistrot du Coin
1738 Connecticut Ave. NW Washington, DC · 202.234.6969
bistrotducoin.com
With its feel good motto of “French, Fun & Friendly,” this
neighborhood hot spot offers great French fare, right in the heart
of Dupont Circle. We highly recommend their duck drizzled in a
green peppercorn reduction topped off with the most decadent
gratin this side of the eastern seaboard, or for a quick fix, you’ll
never go wrong with their steak and frites. Whatever your hearts
desire, the warmth and coziness offered, coupled with the
décor undoubtedly makes you feel as if you’ve been transported
overseas to a bistro in Paris without breaking the bank.
where to eat now—
ten restaurants that matter
9
Old Ebbitt Grill
675 15th St. NW Washington, DC · 202.347.4800 · ebbitt.com
DC’s oldest and historic saloon, located just steps away from the
White House and museums, is a staple amongst Washingtonians
and a favorite amongst DC guests. With its Victorian décor
boasting a priceless collection of antiques and memorabilia,
you are sure to feel a part of the city’s history while enjoying
popular dishes like the jumbo lump crab cakes, succulent shrimp
cocktail or chicken paillard. For a night cap, round up friends
and family to meet you at the famous Oyster bar to indulge in
an array of exceptional oysters and award winning wines.
Georgia Browns
950 15th Street NW Washington, DC · 202.393.4499
gbrowns.com
Serving southern hospitality on a plate is GB’s specialty, and
the number one reason its diners return over and over again.
Executive Chef Dante Fowlkes dubs his guest favorites fried
green tomatoes, fried chicken, sugar and spice pork chops and
Carolina gumbo to compete with your grandma’s cooking—low
country cuisine. Sunday morning brunch, you’ve hit the jackpot
here—GB’s spices it up with jazz, and is the most popular in town.
Taberna del Alabardero
1776 I St. NW (entrance on 18th St.) Washington, DC
202.429.2200 · alabardero.com
A favorite amongst locals as well as dignitaries, Taberna del
Alabardero provides traditional Spanish cuisine. Specializing
in tapas in all of its authentic glory, one step into this World
Bank-area restaurant and you’re in the middle of Madrid. The
infinitely varied off-menu tapas specials and quick surprises
from the kitchen make for DC’s most colorful happy hour.
The Oval Room
800 Connecticut Ave NW Washington, DC · 202.463.8700
ovalroom.com
Located steps from “The Oval Office,” The Oval Room is a critically
acclaimed restaurant serving modern American cuisine with
Mediterranean influences, in a sophisticated, contemporary setting.
Sushi Taro
1503 17th Street NW Washington, DC · 202.462.8999
sushitaro.com
This family owned and operated establishment offers amazing
cuisine and features the largest sushi bar in town. With
approximately 30 different varieties of fish and shell fish, along with
vegetarian sushi served, they are sure to satisfy every palate. And
if that isn’t enough, enjoy their broad range of cooked dishes to
include the traditional yakitori and tempura to the warm and savory
miso soup. Great for family dinning, offering a taste of Japan.
aka white house
neighborhood and history
10
Centrally located at 1710 H Street NW, just two blocks from
the country’s most important residential address, AKA
White House is also in close proximity to many noteworthy
business and arts institutions including the World Bank,
the Treasury Department, the International Monetary Fund,
and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, known for its extensive
collection of 18th, 19th, and 20th century American art.
But the building that invites the most curiosity is of course, the
White House, which was designed by an Irish architect, James
Hoban, after a special commission selected his proposal from
among a slew of competing designs, some of which would
have rendered the president’s home on par with the great
palaces of Europe. Construction began in 1792. Despite his
pivotal role in its creation, George Washington is the only U.S.
president not to have lived in the White House as he resided
in Philadelphia during the mansion’s construction. John
Adams was the first president to inhabit the White House,
moving in in 1800, the year construction was completed.
Interestingly, the structure was nearly destroyed in 1814, in a
fire set by British troops during the War of 1812, but was rebuilt
almost entirely according to the original plan, with one notable
exception. To cover fire damage on the exterior, the original
sandstone was painted white, giving rise to the name ‘White
House’ (although some historians are of the opinion that the
name was used first in 1811). Each presidential occupant has left
some kind of architectural legacy to the property, but the building
looks today very much as it did almost two centuries ago.
Located directly north of the White House, and a short walk
from AKA, is leafy Lafayette Square, named in 1804 in honor of
General Lafayette of France, and then if one continues farther to
the south, the National Mall, where the spectacular Washington
Monument and Lincoln Memorial are truly awe–inspiring sights.
We hope you have time to explore one of Washington’s
most fascinating neighborhoods and find that AKA White
House is a calming alternative to the modern, institutional
approach one often finds in many large–scale hotels.
