Back in 1933, Michigan became the first state
to ratify the 21st Amendment to the
U.S. Constitution, repealing Prohibition.
We don’t know about you, but we’re
really proud of that fact. When the
Amendment was adopted, Michigan
was quickly on its way to becoming a hub
for amazing beer. Dozens of breweries sprung up across
the state, including Midland Brewing Company, opening
in 1935 inside an old creamery in downtown Midland.
Midland Brewing Company developed some signature beers like
Red Keg Ale, named after the first lumber camp and saloon in
Midland County. But during the Great Depression times were
tough and competition was fierce; even with our damn good beer,
the brewery only lasted a few years.
Midland Brewing was reborn in 2010 by a small posse of entrepreneurs dedicated to connecting our
passion for brewing Michigan Craft Beer to Midland’s early history – especially its first 100 years; a time
defined by the lumber, railroad and beer industries. We reopened Midland Brewing Company on
North Saginaw Road near the three-mile marker of the Pere Marquette Rail Trail, not far from Averill,
where the Red Keg Lumber Camp sat by the Tittabawassee River. Since then, we’ve worked to carry
on the legacy of the original Midland Brewing Company – we even brought back Red Keg Ale – while
innovating our own signature brews like Copper Harbor Ale and developing new concoctions all the time.
