Einstein News 6.2014 Principal’s Page 4 to p. 1 Principal Clark’s Comments Dear Einstein Families, As our school year comes to a close, I want to take the time to thank our amazing parent community. I am so appreciative of the tremendous parental support our school community receives from August through June. I know that parent engagement and partnership at the secondary school is much more challenging to navigate in comparison to your elementary school. But staying involved and informed is so important. I feel very fortunate that the families of Einstein have taken the time to build a relationship with Einstein Middle School for the past couple of years. I want to specifically thank Lori Ramsay and Jamie Kirkwood for their PTSA leadership this year. I also want to thank all parents who served our children by supporting the work of the PTSA. On behalf of the entire staff, we appreciate the countless volunteer hours, donations of funds and baked goods, and most importantly the work you have done with your children. The adolescents at Einstein are not perfect, but for teenagers they are unusually kind, courteous, creative and good natured. We are so lucky to be able to work with them on a daily basis. The 750 students attending our school this year have grown and changed physically, socially, intellectually and emotionally. I am very proud of each and every one of them and hope that all of our students have the opportunity to find great success and happiness, and will continue to chase their dreams as they become young adults. Einstein News 6.2014 PTSA Grants 6 to p. 1 Interactive Science Notebooks (INB) Purchased through a grant provided by the PTSA. Thank You! Thank you (and the entire PTSA) again for the grant you awarded me earlier this year. I cannot even begin to tell you how great it was to be able to provide more materials (colored pencils, highlighters, tape, etc.) to the students to use in their science notebooks. The students notice and appreciate when they have sufficient supplies and they love being able to go all out when creating work in their notebooks. Below are some student quotes about their notebooks and also some pictures of the work they created. Thank you! Briahna Attebery Science Teacher “I like my INB because it is fun to use (relative to taking normal notes) and we get to personalize them in different ways. Some ways it helps me learn are the color coding, the different sections of pages (summary, Cota’s, notes, essential question) and the awesome processing pages.” “My INB is really helpful. I learn a lot by using my INB. It’s good for organizing my notes and thoughts and I like the processing pages because you can reflect about what you learned.” “The processing pages help because you can interact with the information.” “I really like my INB because I can personalize my notes and organize them in a way I can understand them, it allows us to add color and express ourselves. Writing something down in my own words or drawing a picture of it really helps me to remember it.” “Having more materials has been great because I have been able to make my INB more vibrant, colorful and fun.” “Color helps me focus on things that are important and make sure it all stays together.” “My INB helps me imprint what I learn into my brain.” “Writing Costa’s questions and summaries hlped me think more about the subject matter and drawing pictures helped me visualize it.” “It’s great because it feels like we are making our own textbook.” PTSA Grants 2013-2014 The Einstein PTSA raised $7,500 in generous contributions from families, matching fund contributions through businesses, and our community. We promise a fun time with Coach Jason and Coach Gary learning how to play football safely and competitively. Sign up by Friday June 6th! Forms are in the office. Shoreline Triple D Conditioning Camp Can't seem to motivate yourself to work out? Needing to get in shape for a fall sport? Thinking about getting those six-pack abs you've always wanted? The 19th annual summer training/conditioning program is back again at the brand new Shorecrest weight room. Seven weeks of personal training and instruction for only $70 and it's open to any Shoreline student entering grades 7-12. Pick up forms in the main office, or download them online from the Shoreline Secondary Athletic websites (click HERE for a link to the registration form). Health Joni Wishaar, MBA, BSN, RN, School Nurse Life Threatening Conditions The Legislature passed SHB 2834, Children with Life Threatening Conditions, which requires a medical treatment plan for students attending public schools with medical conditions that could be lifethreatening. A life threatening condition is defined as “a health condition that will put the child in danger of death during the school day, if medication or treatment order and a nursing plan are not in place.” Examples include severe asthma (has the child been hospitalized or visited the emergency room in the last year for treatment of asthma), diabetes and severe allergies (that would require administration of an Epi-Pen). The stature requires the medical order and plan are in place before the child can attend school. The child will be excluded from school until the order from a Licensed Health Care Provider is obtained. If your child has a life threatening condition, forms need to be completed each school year. Forms may be obtained from me. I will be available the week before school starts to formulate the care plan based on the Licensed Health Care Provider’s order. If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please call me at (206) 393-4734. Medication Pick-up Prescribed, controlled medications, such as Ritalin or Dexedrine, that are administered at school need to be picked up before or by the last day of school. Over-the-counter medication and inhalers will be sent home with your child the last week of school. Any medication not taken home by the last day of school will be thrown out as medication cannot be stored at school over the summer. Einstein News 6.2014 Library 10 to p. 1 Lines from the Library Anne Dame, Librarian How is it possible that June is already here? As we wrap up the school year, here are some things to know about library hours, due dates, summer reading, etc.: DUE DATE: All library materials are due on Friday, June 6th. Since that is the date of the final book club, please remember to turn in your book as well as your project. If you need us to make an exception, you must talk to Ms. Dame or Ms. Ching! All books must be returned and lost/damaged books must be either paid for or replaced before students will be able to get their yearbooks. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. LIBRARY HOURS: Even though books must be returned by June 6th, and there will be no further checkouts after that date, the library will still be open for the usual times. As a reminder, we open at 8:00 AM and are open until at least 3:30 PM daily. We are also open throughout the school day and the second 15 minutes of each lunch. Feel free to stop by, play a game of chess, use the computers, chat quietly with your friends, ask for book recommendations, do research, etc. to the classes that were able to sign up. There will be physical copies to distribute at that time and students who don't make it to the book talk can pick one of those up at their leisure. RECOMMENDATIONS: Until the list is published, here are a couple books from the list I have read and enjoyed. Boys in the Boat, by Daniel James Brown - This is the story of nine Americans and their epic quest for gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The 9 young men are all University of Washington crew members. It is the story of their struggle during the depression, their unrelenting hard work, the political intrigues as the Nazi party came into power, and so much more. Inspiring non-fiction! A Song for Bijou, by Josh Farrar - Alex is a 7th grader at an all boys Catholic school in Brooklyn. One day he spots a new girl at their sister school, St. Catherine's. Bijou is from Haiti and has come here to live with her aunt and uncle after the devastating earthquake in 2010. Alex attempts to befriend Bijou but her cultural upbringing is quite strict about interactions between genders. A sweet tale of friendship with an interesting look at the Haitian culture. SUMMER READING: The Richmond Beach and Shoreline librarians, Aarene Storms and Rick Orsillo, have collaborated with me and Ms. McAllister, the librarian at Kellogg, to create a book list with each of our top picks for summer reading. You will find action, mystery, graphic novels, non-fiction, romance, sports, and more on our list. Right now it is still under construction, but as soon as it is ready, I will post it on the library website. Also, Aarene and Rick will be here on June 10th and we will all present Thank you to the PTSA! THANK YOU to the PTSA for the generous grant of 2 iPads for the library! We have already used the iPads with the WRITE Stuff club to film a table top movie using a script they wrote themselves. I can't wait to continue finding new uses for the iPads in the library with our students. After poring through data from numerous labs and research centers around the world, Nina Kraus and her team came to realize how valuable music is in enhancing learning ability. "The brain is unable to process all of the available sensory information from second to second, and thus must selectively enhance what is relevant. Playing an instrument primes the brain to choose what is relevant in a complex process that may involve reading or remembering a score, timing issues and coordination with other musicians," she explained. The Einstein Jazz Band Our Einstein Jazz Band meets before school three days a week. Members play in a band, orchestra or choir class during the daily schedule and participate in Jazz Band as an extension of their playing experience. Being a member of Jazz Band is lots of fun and very rewarding. We learn to play jazz, rock and Latin music. We also learn to improvise, which is the ability to create a solo that fits in with the music that the band is playing. We perform at many Einstein, District, community and regional events and annually perform with Shorewood High's Jazz Band at their Big Band Dance. This coming year we will meet on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 7-8:15am. Any members who are planning on joining Jazz Band, and are planning to take 0 Period PE, will need to get scheduled for PE during 2nd Semester. If you are planning to take 0 Period PE and want to join Jazz Band, please let Mr. Halferty know right away so that he can put you on the list of those who need 2nd Semester PE. You can contact him at: frank.halferty@ shorelineschools.org When 2nd Semester starts, Jazz Band Members will come to Jazz on Tuesday and Thursday suited for PE at 7am. Students attending PE class will go to 0 period PE directly from Jazz Band at 7:30am. Students not attending PE will be able to practice on their own or study until 1st period begins at 8:30am. On Fridays, during 1st and 2nd Semesters, we'll have Jazz Band from 7- 8:20am since no PE classes are scheduled on those days.
