BE A
SCHOOL
Dear Teachers and Students,
The internet and social media can be wonderful tools for knowledge, interaction and
exploration. Simultaneously, the need to inform our schools about social media safety has
increased. At Media Safe©, our professionals have created this “Be A Media Safe School”
package to allow teachers the opportunity to discuss very important issues regarding internet
and social media safety with their students. This package includes:
-a download copy of the music (lyric) video “Be Media Safe (ft. DJ DELF)”
-a download copy of the song “Be Media Safe (ft. DJ DELF)”
-a download copy of the instrumental version of the song “Be Media Safe (ft. DJ DELF)”
-a 15 page educational package featuring a wide variety of reflection and conversation
starters to engage students in both talk and action regarding social media safety
Please take a moment to sit down as a class, watch the lyric video to our song “Be Media Safe”
(lyrics/music: DJ DELF), and have a frank discussion about media safety. You may follow up
this discussion with any of the following additional options:
1. Use any or all of the enclosed discussion tools and activities included with this
package. These reflection and conversation starters are designed to open up class
discussions on how all the members of your school can become media safe.
2. Fill out the optional class Media Safe© Digital Contract.
3. Have your students take the “Video Response Challenge.” Have your students make
their own video for the song or create their own reply video. Contact Media Safe Corp.
for details on possible contests.
4. Consider booking a Media Safe workshop for your school, parent group, business,
church or camp. Customized packages available.
Feel free to contact us at any time with any questions you may have about media safety. Come join
the thousands that are a part of our Media Safe network.
Sincerely,
Ryan Richardson

Suggestions
What did he just say?: Watch the lyric video, listen to the song, look over the lyrics of the song “Be Media
Safe” by DJ DELF. Discuss as a class. Ask questions of each other. What lines, expressions or phrases from
the song stick out to you? Can you relate to any statements in this song? How real are the issues brought
forth in the song? Have there been any local news stories related to any of these issues? Do your students
know of any friends or schoolmates that struggle with any of these issues?
The Good, The Bad: Use the T-Chart provided to make a list of the benefits of social media (the Good) and
the negative attributes of social media (the Bad). Then, discuss your answers as a class.
ANSWERS: Answers will vary. And, some answers may appear on both sides of the T-Chart. Some benefits include the fact that social media
engages, affirms, advances knowledge, allows us to stay in contact with others, and shares ideas. Some negative attributes include loss of
privacy, cyberbullying, misunderstandings, cyberstalking, and regrettable posts.

Which APP is apt?: There are thousands of apps out on the market. Most are healthy and helpful. Others
can be harmful by the poor habits they can create. And, then, some enter that grey area. Use this graphic
organizer and write down popular apps in the categories you see fit. Then, discuss as a family. Use this
same sheet for social media sites, instead of apps.
A Digital Vacation: Spending too much time on digital devices? Maybe you need a digital vacation!
Challenge your students to think up wonderful digital vacation activities that require no use of electronics,
Wi-Fi or digital connections. Complete the form individually and then share in partners and as a group.
Choose the best idea and agree to do this activity as a class next week!
Digital Contract: We at Media Safe encourage classes to have the “social media talk.” This contract allows
you to agree as a class, exactly what you have discussed. It also allows you the space to agree upon a class
plan for social media use including a space for parameters, “rules” or limits that you may wish to agree
upon.
Role Playing: Enough talk! Put your words into acting (action)! In groups of 2 to 4 people, choose a RAFT
scenario (or mix and match), write a skit and perform it. Record the best skits on video and share them on
a social media format of your choice!
Think Before You Post!: You may have heard the familiar slogan “Think before you speak!” or “Look
before you leap!” Today, let us consider the statement: “Think before you text or post!” Be honest. Is
everything that we are writing in our emails, texts, posts, tweets, or blogs of value to others and always a
proper representation of who we are? Read the five messages provided. Determine which Media Safe
rule(s) best addresses each message. Re-write and improve each message. Hint: sometimes NOT posting
at all is the right response.
ANSWERS: Some of the rules will apply to more than one text message. But, here are some possible answers: 1-C, 2-A, 3-E, 4-B, 5-D
#8
True or false? Yay or Nay?: Have students complete form. Discuss in pairs or as a group.
ANSWERS: These following statements are actually true statements: #2, #3, #5 And, these statements are false statements: #1 (over 1
billion users),#4 (all things posted are public) #6 (what you post is never 100% private), #7 (over 45% of people post their real birthdates)

Video Response Challenge: Have your students create a video response to the lyric video “Be Media Safe
(ft. DJ DELF).” Whether making a new video for the song or using the instrumental version and rewriting a
new version, have your students complete a video, send us the link. Winners will be announced at the end
of the school year. Prizes for top three videos to be awarded.
Open-Ended Questions: Let’s talk! Answer the open-ended questions provided. Share your answers with a
partner. Begin a frank class discussion about these questions. Address the questions that students added
for question #7. ANSWERS: Answers will vary.

What did he just say?
Be Media Safe
(lyrics/music: DJ DELF)
CHORUS:
Be… Media Safe Be… Media Safe
Be…. Media Safe (your safety is all that matters in the end) / Be… Media Safe (never friend a friend unless
they’re a friend)
Verse 1: Dealing with social media addiction
From coast to coast, you think ya post the most / Got so many profiles, you’re an online ghost
You’re thumbs be sore, from texting all day / Livin’ it large, the cyber way
But you’re lost in the fiction, social media addiction / Retweet this message until it sticks in
Your head before you lose it, make a choice and choose it / Take a break from social media, if you abuse it
Don’t Ask.fm, ask yourself / Find some balance in your life, take a book off the shelf
Be… Media Safe (read a book, not just the kind that starts with Face) / Be… Media Safe (find some balance,
interact with the human race)
Verse 2: Making good online “friend” choices and dealing with online predators
You get a post from a guy, you thinkin’ he’s fly / He tells you you’re hot, and you ask him “Why?”
Texting back and forth, you’re lost in his game / Not knowing his intentions or his real name
You like his profile pic, you’re his next vic / You’re intentions our pure, his intentions are sick
Now emojis
are flyin’, you send a pic or two / Not knowin’ he’s a balding, fatty aged 52
Delete this fool, ignore that scrub / You don’t need LIKES to be loved / You don’t need LIKES to be loved
Be…. Media Safe (man, that dude’s 52!) / Be… Media Safe (he’s got a daughter and she’s older than you)
Verse 3: Dealing with online haters and cyberbullying
They want to engage you, in text to text combat / You text before you think, all the haters know that
They go online to criticize, chastise, spread lies / But realize, no responses are the best replies
Just cuz you can, don’t mean you should / Though they wish you would, cuz they could get you good
Before your comments are forever in cyberspace / Givin’ them the win, while losing your face
Don’t reply in anger, like some fool, / Stop, wait…. follow, the 10 second rule / Stop, wait…. follow, the 10
second rule
Be…. Media Safe (don’t post back, with words of hate) / Be… Media Safe (your silence will kill ‘em as they sit
and wait)
Be…. Media Safe (your safety is all that matters in the end) / Be… Media Safe (never friend a friend unless
they’re a friend)

Think Before You Post!
Read the following five text messages. Are these messages of value? In the column labeled “Rule,” place
the correct letter of the Media Safe Rule(s) that best addresses each message. Re-write each message in
a way that would be a better representation of you and the permanent impression you would want to
leave. Remember that what you post can be permanent.

Video Response Challenge
Music videos are still one of the most popular mediums today. The Media Safe “Video
Response Challenge” challenges students to produce a music video that will best present
and visually support the authentic topics covered in this popular DJ DELF song.
Encourage your students to dress up like music stars, create banners, signs, dance
movements, dramatic scenes, sing their hearts out… anything that will help create an
effective video. Students may choose to make a video for the existing song or they may
choose to make a “video response” by writing their own lyrics and by using the
instrumental version of the song.
Your students may use any of the following tools that come with this package:
-the “Be Media Safe” lyric video – for reference and ideas
-the “Be Media Safe” song – to use with their response video
-the “Be Media Safe” instrumental song – to create lyrics for a response video
-the ““Video Choreography Storyboard” - for students to map out their entire
video, in advance, using this planning tool
The instrumental version of the song maintains the words “Media Safe” in the chorus but
eliminates the word “Be.” This allows your students the freedom to replace the word “Be”
with “I’m” or “We’re” or “Are you?”, etc. when they work on their creative response song
and video.
Spend one final class relaxing and evaluating the videos as a class. You may even choose
to hold your own “Be Media Safe Video Award Ceremony.”
When you are done, upload your videos on YouTube (you may choose to set the videos
as public, unlisted or private) and send us the weblink. At the end of the year, we will
announce the winners of this challenge. Prizes to be awarded for the top three videos.
Send weblinks to [email protected].
