To convert a decimal to a percent, represent it as a fraction first. When the denominator is 100, then it’s “out of 100” and can be converted to a percent. To convert a percent to a decimal, convert to a fraction out of 100 first. Then, use place value reasoning to convert to a decimal. Plan Your Lesson What materials will you need to prepare ahead of time? I will prepare a chart to be filled in as we convert fractions, decimals and percents. The chart will have a decimal filled in and then ask for them to fill in the equivalent percent. I will also have a student handout with practice problems. What you are doing Opening – Introduce the objective and the purpose of your lesson. Yesterday we learned how to read decimals based on their place values. 30 sec. – 1 min. Who can raise their hand and remind me – how would we read “.29”? Expected answer: We would say 29 hundredths. What students are doing How will students learn the objective? Students will be listening carefully and responding to questions. Why? Expected answer: Because the decimal goes to the hundredths place, so it represents 29 hundredths. Good job! That’s going to come in handy today. We are going to be converting decimals to percent and percent to decimals. One thing that’s going to help us figure out how to convert between decimals and percent is one simple fact – the word “percent” actually means “out of 100”. 3–4 minutes Using that fact and what we learned yesterday about how to read decimals, we will be able to do these conversions! Let’s start with an example – 47%. We are going to turn this percent into a decimal. When I say 3, everyone remind me again, what does “percent” mean? 1-2-3 Expected Answer: “Out of 100”. Good, now how would I represent “47 out of 100” as a fraction? Expected answer 47/100. Students will be taking notes on their worksheets, and then they will practice converting decimals and percents on their own. Now I see 47/100, and I can think to myself “that says 47 out of 100 or it says “forty-seven hundredths”. How would I would I write the decimal “forty-seven hundredths”? Expected answer: .47 Let’s do an example the other way around… How would I turn .07 into a percent? Well, let’s think about it as a fraction. What is “seven hundredths” as a fraction? Expected answer: 7/100. Oh, and what’s the other word that means “out of 100”? Tell me on 3. 1-2-3 Expected answer: “Percent” So, what’s another way to think about 7 out of 100? 7%! Notes To convert between decimals and percent – think about how to represent the value as a fraction, and then use the fraction to determine what the decimal or percent is. Student Independent Work Take 1 minute on your own to do numbers 1 and 2 on your worksheet. 30 sec. – 1 min. Closing – Sum up your lesson and check if students have mastered the objective.
