What is E-ZPass ?
SM
E-ZPass is a remarkable electronic toll
collection technology that is making
travel more convenient.
E-ZPass
customers use an
E-ZPass “tag,”
which is a 3”x4”
plastic box that
contains a small
electronic chip
inside of it, to pay
their tolls. This tag is the key component
of the E-ZPass system. Your E-ZPass
prepaid account number and other
vehicle information are contained on the
chip inside the tag and are transmitted to
a computer as you drive through the lane.
This, along with information that is
gathered about your vehicle by other
equipment in the lane, allows the correct
toll amount to be deducted from the
proper account.
E-ZPass customers are provided the
following benefits:
▲ Use of the same tag for all regional
E-ZPass facilities from Delaware to
Massachusetts to the Peace Bridge.
▲ Convenient credit card sign-up and
replenishment payments.
▲ Saves users’ time
because at most toll
plazas including the
Peace Bridge, there are
dedicated lanes solely
for their use.
▲ Reduces toll plaza
delays by processing
three times as many
vehicles per lane as manual lanes, in the
same amount of time.
▲ Users no longer need to find cash and
coins, or tokens, or roll down their
windows in inclement weather to pay
tolls manually.
▲ Motorists do not need to collect receipts;
they will receive regular statements
showing their toll usage.
card) you will be required to put down a
$10 deposit for each tag that you request.
This deposit is also reimbursed if you cancel
your account provided your tag is returned
in good condition.
You will receive periodic statements
detailing your activity that will replace the
receipts that you are currently issued in
manual lanes. If you are a check or money
order customer, these statements will include
a payment coupon that you will use to add
funds to your prepaid account.
There is no extra charge to use E-ZPass. In
fact, the Peace Bridge offers a 30% toll discount
over the U.S. cash rate for E-ZPass users. To
enroll in this service you must fund a prepaid
account that is associated with your E-ZPass
tag. Tolls will be deducted from this account
as you use your E-ZPass tag. This is still your
money that you will be using towards tolls,
and any remaining balance will be reimbursed
to you upon the cancellation of your account.
Up to four tags are allowed for each Peace
Bridge Authority E-ZPass account.
Also, if you decide to make payments by
check or money order (as opposed to credit
2. As you travel through the toll lane, the patron fare
display will indicate for you to proceed 2 . At the Peace
Bridge, a toll gate will raise when your vehicle can
proceed across the Peace Bridge into Canada.
How does E-ZPass work?
1. The Automatic Vehicle Identification antenna reads your
account information from your E-ZPass tag as the vehicle
approaches the lane 1 . The system verifies your account
information, including your current toll balance, and
electronically deducts the appropriate toll from your account.
3. If your prepaid account balance is insufficient to pay
the toll, the patron display will say “Call E-ZPass” and the
gate will not raise 3 . A toll lane attendant will respond
and you will be required to pay cash.
