The League’s Monthly E-newsletter January 2013 The League’s Monthly E-newsletter From the Editor “We have come to know and to believe in the love that God has for us.” – Communion Antiphon, January 15 Greetings and best wishes for 2013! How exciting it is to begin a new year with the theme We Have Seen the Lord, to continue the Year of Faith and to keep spreading the light with Catch the Fire! presentations! It is wonderful to see the fire is catching across Canada. I am looking forward to many more reports, plus pictures in this new year! As always, it is inspiring to hear from councils about the good work being accomplished at the grassroots level. Does anyone have a story as a follow-up to a Catch the Fire! presentation? Have you heard how someone was touched and in turn, lit another fire? Is there someone who is willing to write a short article on how Catch the Fire! inspired her? We welcome such stories. We are also very interested in short articles on how members have seen the Lord in their daily lives and especially in their League activities. I have a New Year’s resolution for all councils. “This year, we resolve to submit at least one story from our council for publication in Be League.” Here are a few suggestions: • • • • • Something innovative your council did A Catch the Fire! presentation report A We Have Seen the Lord story A Year of Faith story Something, anything, which makes your council unique Be creative! Include pictures as well, and remember to have written permission from those in the pictures. (See note on p.9.) I am looking forward to issues of Be League brimming with great news from across Canada! We have so much for which to be grateful – our faith, friendships and fulfillment in the League. May God be with us as we journey forth into the unknown of 2013. December brought much busyness: preparations, presents, parties, prayers and progeny, of the next generation. It was exhilarating to participate in life in so many ways! My parish council had a visit from Santa at its Christmas dinner. I have begun to work on its election register for the next change of executive. It is amazing how fast time flies! I brought your love and congratulations to the members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Council in Hastings, Ontario as the council marked its 90th anniversary with a mass and celebratory lunch. So many years ago, seven women of vision gathered to do something ”For God and Canada.” We toasted their courage. Leona English (pictured) and members hosted past presidents and diocesan members in a friendly, welcoming manner. Member of Parliament Rick Norlock (Northumberland--Quinte West) earnestly urged attendees to let local members of parliament and provinciallyelected representatives know where members stand on important family issues. In order to represent us, they need to hear our values; if they do not, then they will think their constituents agree with popular opinion. Issues such as prostitution are very close to becoming legal. Is this what members want? If people do nothing then evil will succeed. So, simple, polite, ethical, reasonable communications with elected officials is most important. And now we look ahead, begging for God’s mercy and His holy inspiration. On this feast of Mary the Mother of God, may her good counsel be a light to us all. Betty Anne Brown Davidson National President 2 The League’s Monthly E-newsletter Mary Lou Veeken of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish Council, Sherwood Park, Alberta, reports two Catch the Fire! workshops were held in the Archdiocese of Edmonton; one in Olds, with approximately 45 attendees and another in Sherwood Park with 21 attendees. We have added two flames to the map. The flames are clearly spreading across Canada! 3 The League’s Monthly E-newsletter Council News St. Emile Parish Council, Legal, Alberta President Bernice Montpetit reports that she (right) and past president Florence Quaghebeur (back rowcenter) met with “Parent Link” program facilitator Amy Dauvin (left) on December 5th to give a presentation to young mothers on the activities and role of the League in their parish. St. Emile Parish Council provided a monetary donation to the program to help with supplies needed for various parties. St. Gerard Parish Council, Yorkton, Saskatchewan Treasurer Yvonne Turgeon presented Charlene Malayney, palliative care coordinator, and Eleanor Fenske, volunteer with the palliative care program (Sunrise Health Region), with comfort cushions, made by members to be used by palliative care patients within the region. Made with fleece and lined with batting, comfort cushions ease sore hips, elbows and ankles by preventing these areas from rubbing on linens. St. Gerard Parish Council also spearheaded a parish-wide toy drive in response to the need for toys for The Salvation Army Christmas Assistance program. At its recent ”Ladies of the Parish Christmas Banquet”, president Dolores Spreitzer made the presentation to Major Linda Mailman. 4 The League’s Monthly E-newsletter Anniversaries and Service Awards Barbara Coulas Melanie Nazareth Maple Leaf Service Pin St. Joseph Parish Council St. Joseph Parish Council Streetsville, Ontario Streetsville, Ontario Reta Quesnel 60 Year Pin Holy Family Parish Council Deux Montagnes, QC Margaret Bell Sophia Hibbeln Gertrude McMaster 50 Year Pin St. Bonaventure Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council Toronto, Ontario Toronto, Ontario Toronto, Ontario Karen Abbott Francine Bukkems Betty Christie 40 Year Pin St. Bonaventure Parish Council Sacred Heart Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council Toronto, Ontario Wetaskiwin, Alberta Toronto, Ontario Daphne Alvarez Hilda Budzinski Ann Fellin Ruthe Hall Thelma Jonathan Pat Murray Cathy Valenti 25 Year Pin St. Bonaventure Parish Council Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council Sacred Heart Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council Toronto, Ontario Surrey, BC Toronto, Ontario Surrey, BC Toronto, Ontario Wetaskiwin, Alberta Toronto, Ontario Ursula Ano Colette Berry Cora Costales Wendy Dingillo Theresa Doherty Ljudica Durdic Mary Edwards 10 Year Pin Sacred Heart Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council Sacred Heart Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council Sacred Heart Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council Wetaskiwin, Alberta Toronto, Ontario Wetaskiwin, Alberta Toronto, Ontario Wetaskiwin, Alberta Toronto, Ontario Toronto, Ontario 5 The League’s Monthly E-newsletter Kathleen Fitzgibbons Joanne Franey Sue Hobberlin Pauline Kaminski Margaret Kinsland Rose Kostiuk Janie Ryan Mary Seltz Sharon West St. Bonaventure Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council Sacred Heart Parish Council Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish Council Sacred Heart Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council St. Bonaventure Parish Council Toronto, Ontario Toronto, Ontario Toronto, Ontario Wetaskiwin, Alberta Surrey, BC Wetaskiwin, Alberta Toronto, Ontario Toronto, Ontario Toronto, Ontario Be League January Quiz There are two answers to each question this month – the name of the saint(s) and the date in January. 1.
