Old Alturas ©2011 WINTU AUDUBON SOCIETY riginally a working mule ranch belonging to Chuck and Peggy Lema in the 1950s, the Lema Ranch has been home for the McConnell Foundation Headquarters since 1997. One way the Foundation shares its space at Lema Ranch is by providing public trails. The Lema Ranch trails - four miles in all and set on about 200 acres - showcase four ponds. The ponds, built by the Lema family in the early 1950s, were enhanced in 1997 when the Foundation Headquarters was developed, to encourage aquatic plant communities that provide wildlife habitat and improve water quality. Those walking the Lema Ranch trails will notice a diversity of plants, from graceful weeping willows to manzanita, oak and pine trees, and native grasses. Many species of wildlife can be spotted by the careful observer, including numerous bird species. Since the trails opened, members of the Wintu Audubon Society maintained records of birds observed on the property, and have summarized that work in this checklist.
