MAYOR’S WELCOME
I’m proud to welcome you to the 2016 Shimmer
Photographic Biennale,
the fourth time the City of
Onkaparinga has presented
this one of a kind photographic
event in our beautiful region.
Held throughout the month of September,
Shimmer is a series of exhibitions, events,
photographic workshops, and artist
talks staged across 15 distinctive and
photogenic venues in Port Noarlunga and
the McLaren Vale wine precinct.
This year’s geographic concentration
allows us to highlight the region’s innate
flair for hosting and producing quality
art events, while celebrating the area’s
excellent food and world-class wines.
Shimmer celebrates the work of 30
emerging and established contemporary
local and interstate photographers
including Mark Kimber, Emma Hack, Peter Solness, and collective groups such
as Skrambled Eggs.
A choice of workshops will provide
opportunities to learn about light based
processes and techniques, develop new
skills in the Tintype Traveller, a pop up
caravan darkroom, or focus on creating
culinary images good enough to eat.
This year the City of Onkaparinga will also launch the inaugural Shimmer Photographic Time-lapse Competition to
encourage photographers to highlight
their time-lapse prowess.
The winner and finalists will be
announced and their work exhibited at
the launch of Shimmer, at the Arts Centre
in Port Noarlunga on Friday 2 September.
Shimmer continues to shine as a quality
arts event and an undisputed highlight on the arts festival calendar.
I warmly welcome you all to Shimmer and to our beautiful city.
Mayor Lorraine
Rosenberg
City of Onkaparinga
ARTS AND INCLUSION
Entering its fourth biennial
cycle, Shimmer will shine
throughout Port Noarlunga
and the beautiful McLaren Vale
region, with an illuminate array
of exhibitions, workshops, artist
talks and events.
This year we introduce the inaugural
Shimmer Photographic Time-lapse
Competition utilising the captivating allure
of time lapse photography to showcase our
city, the winners and shortlisted finalists of which are included in the program.
Celebrating our reputation as an art, food
and wine destination, the photographic
biennale sparkles for the month of
September as over 35 emerging and
established artists and photographers
interlink with their host venues to
sublimate their finest for your viewing and
tasting pleasure.
We would like to take this opportunity to
acknowledge all who have supported the
Shimmer vision from the past and into the
future. A heartfelt thank you goes to all the
artists who have produced such an eminent
range of inimitable work, and for providing
images and text explaining their work in
this booklet.
We are most grateful for your willingness
to share so generously of your visions,
craft and skills.
Thank you to the participating venues
for their substantial support of our
talented artists, and for enlivening the
local arts industry. Without your ongoing
investment in the future of the arts of
this region, our artists would operate
without a local platform and the region’s
reputation as an arts destination would
be culturally diminished.
And finally, we thank our sponsors for their generous assistance and unwavering contribution, particularly our
major sponsor, Red Poles, whose donation
of inexhaustible time and energy has
been integral for the successful delivery of this event.
With kind regards we welcome you to
2016 Shimmer Photographic Biennale and
trust this incandescent program brings the
light, colour and magic of photography a
little deeper into your world.

SHIMMER FORWARD 2016
The Fleurieu region has always
had a strong connection to arts
and culture.
The region is a place where all the
wonderful elements of food, wine, arts
and culture weave together to form a rich
tapestry for all to experience – whether it is
those who are lucky enough to live or work
in the region or whether it is the tourist
and consumer discovering this wealth of
offerings to be savoured and enjoyed.
The City of Onkaparinga’s Shimmer
photographic festival has its own special
place in our region. A photograph is
described in the dictionary as a picture
formed by the chemical action of light
or other radiation on a sensitive film.
The word shimmer is described as the
moment to shine with a tremulous light,
to have the ability to emit or reflect light.
How apt is the name of the Shimmer
festival when the creative act of taking
a photograph lasts but a brief moment,
a lightening instant to capture a certain
time in a certain place.
It’s important to remember when looking
at every photograph that there are two
people to have input – the photographer
and the viewer. We need to remember to
look into a photograph not just look at it.
Art does not feed off itself alone. A poem,
a tune, a dialogue, a journey. A cognition
that kindles a creative passion. Every
aspect of life is a source of inspiration. As
Edward Steichen once said “photography
records the gamut of feelings written on
the human face, the beauty of the earth
and skies that man has inherited, and the
wealth and confusion man has created. It
is a major force in explaining man to man”.
The 2016 Shimmer program features
numerous exhibitions featuring many
artists across fifteen venues in and around
McLaren Vale. There are workshops
and artist talks throughout the month.
Enjoy September in the Fleurieu region,
enjoy Shimmer, celebrate the medium of
photography in all its varied facets and
appreciate how the camera can teach us
how to see without a camera.

The centre is part of the Out of the Square consortium, a metropolitan entertainment
circuit providing the best South Australian performers and talent to entertain
audiences, and features a regular program of cabaret performances, arts events and
visual arts exhibitions.
Emma’s newest works, Chinoiserie,
launched in Hong Kong last month,
feature the delicate positioning of her

her painted backgrounds, exploring
the intriguing beauty if our oriental

interpret and interrogate his subject.
Robert McFarlane wrote about Solness,
“In making the artistic choice to light each
vista, Solness reinvents each scene before
him, adding a dream-like nocturnal beauty
to every photograph”. Showing alongside
Solness, local photographers Sara Huffen

For four decades we’ve nurtured our
vineyards in McLaren Vale, South Australia.
During this time our philosophy and
reputation has been built on growing

organic and biodynamic farming practices. Our mission now is to showcase quality,
varietal expression and natural regional diversity within a range of wines that will
indulge lovers of the finest drop. It’s been heads down, tails up for everyone at Paxton,
for as long as we can remember, and while we have been working we’ve become one
of McLaren Vale’s most respected wine producers.

past few years experimented with faux
alternative photographic processes via my
iPhone. I take delight in creating art from
the images I capture and manipulate via

with environmental issues has escalated
and in sympathy my art too has become
more focused on the juxtapositions of the
cities and landscapes I have photographed.
The growing insanity around blinkered
governmental denials over climate change
has enraged me and over time I have
channelled those thoughts and feelings
into the works I submit here. I call them

If you break two-dozen eggs, what do you

smartphone wielding photographers
come together to demonstrate that it’s not
about the equipment, it’s about how you
use it. Sometimes the best art can be made

the moments that matter.
These days, almost everyone has the tools

time to come in and see the new developments, as well as try some exclusive new
cellar door only wines, or a structured tasting of the best wines Hardys has to offer.
This is a curated series of small exhibitions
that have been submitted from around
Australia. Each entrant has made it
through a pre-judging, and will have

SHIMMERNINSULA
SHIMMERNINSULA
ARTIST: CHRIS OATEN
Fri 2 Sept – Sun 2 Oct
In 1892 Alexander Campbell Johnston
planted the first small vine cuttings on his
newly purchased 97 hectare property in
McLaren Vale, South Australia. Alexander settled with his family on the property and
proudly named it Pirramimma, the Aboriginal phrase meaning the moon and the stars.
More than 124 years and three generations later, the Johnston family still operates
one of Australia’s oldest, proudest family owned, nationally and internationally award
winning run wineries – Pirramimma. Making wines that range from the traditional to the
innovative, Pirramimma is pure McLaren Vale. As one of the original landholders in the
region the family is committed to its home and the regionally unique wines they produce.
As a commercial and industrial timelapse
photographer, Chris Oaten spends much of
his time pointing cameras at construction
sites and civic projects. Earlier this
year he jumped at the invitation to do
something different by joining the Salty
Stories exhibition at Red Poles, showing
a four-minute timelapse montage
focussing on the coastal beauty of the
Fleurieu Peninsula. The work on show at
Piramimma is an extension of that project,
with Chris bringing his cameras inland
to examine the beauty and mystery
of the region in a way that can only be
revealed through the compression and
manipulation of time. You can be certain
you’ve never seen the Fleurieu the way
Chris would like you to.

Fri 2 Sept – Sun 2 Oct
In the age of the pixel, 12 South Australian
photographers bypass digital processes
to explore alternative photographic
processes and the hand-crafted image
of slow photography. As the digital
image becomes more immediate and
pervasive, these photographers nurture
their work through the painstakingly
complex, deliberate, and protracted
techniques used in traditional laboratories
between 100 and 150 years ago. Processes
explored include tintypes, ambrotypes,
daguerreotypes, cyanotypes, salt prints
and other hand-made photographs.
The exhibition showcases some of
South Australia’s leading analogue and
alternative image-makers to celebrate the
chemical image in the digital age.

PRESENTS:
AT THE EDGE OF THE WILDERNESS
AT THE EDGE OF THE WILDERNESS
ARTIST: MARK KIMBER
Fri 2 Sept – Sun 2 Oct
Hugo Wines is a family owned and
operated winery situated in the McLaren
Vale wine region. The family believe in the
quality fruit the fifth generation property
produces allowing exceptional wines to be produced each year. The family and staff
welcome visitors to the cosy cellar door to taste and purchase award winning wines,
extra virgin olive oil and appreciate the gallery of works by artists while taking in the
panoramic views of surrounding vineyards. Seating for picnics or relaxing and a lawn
area for the younger family members to play, it all makes for a very pleasant experience.
The cut out clouds in a theatre set don’t
say this is exactly what a cloud looks like.
It suggests that this is a representation of
a cloud, how we might remember clouds
to be, or even how clouds feel.
The photographs were taken with a
plastic camera by photographing tiny
models of structures in my garage. Making
each work for me, a performance, the
inspiration for which springs from events
real and imagined, experienced and
observed from a distance both in space
and time. Such as the lingering memory
I have of the wood-engraved illustrations
of the ancient mariner filtered through
scenes of ships at sea from Hollywood
B-grade pirate movies.

PRESENTS:
SALTY GIRLS
Fri 2 Sept – Sun 2 Oct
Gemtree is a family owned winery and
we are all passionate about growing
better wine, naturally. Mike Brown, Chief
Winemaker, works together with his wife
Melissa Brown, Biodynamic Viticulturist, to grow the award winning wines which
have received James Halliday 5 star rating since 2009. Mike and Melissa’s philosophy is
simple – minimal intervention in the winemaking process and a more environmentally
conscious farming system to produce organic wines which are powerful, concentrated,
and express the true characteristics of each grape variety and the region.
Our sustainable cellar door in McLaren Vale has sweeping views all the way to the sea
and is open 7 days. Relax on the deck with a glass of wine and a platter or book our
private tasting room for a structured wine flight.

This property is home for an array of wildlife, it has native bush as well as vines

Paul Smith and family. Paul and Tracy Smith
handcraft a tiny 800 cases of award-winning
wines each year from premium red grapes
grown on their 7ha sustainably-managed farm,

McLaren Vale Scarce Earth Award for four consecutive years for their ROW 23 Shiraz.
They boast a range of wines from white and rosé to red wines, and sell-out each year.
My most recent series, a look into the
deeper spiritual side of my photography,
unearthly and alien like. Lucid brings out
an evocative feel to my work, mysterious

SCULPTING WITH LIGHT: LANDSCAPE LIGHT
PAINTING AND POST PRODUCTION
FACILITATOR: PETER SOLNESS
Sat 10 Sept
Light painting is an exciting and original
way to create memorable photographs.
Unlike conventional photography that
relies on existing light to photograph a
scene, light painting puts your camera
‘in the dark’ and only allows it to see
what you want it to see. This way of
working offers countless possibilities for
aspiring photographers. You will have the
opportunity to work on location in low
light to create unique and memorable
images, which can add variety and
technical diversity to your portfolio.
Peter will be doing a postproduction
demo session before the shoot to help you
anticipate the steps involved in finessing
the crafted image.

Peter’s best images to get you inspired.
Light painting can be applied in many
different ways to create memorable
images. In this half-day workshop we will
work in a studio environment and explore
ways to create unique still life and portrait
images using simple hand held torches.
You will have the opportunity to create

PRESENTS:
ALTERNATIVE PROCESS WORKSHOP SERIES
FACILITATOR: CHRIS OATEN
Sat 3 Sept – Sun 4 Sept
Join professional timelapse photographer
Chris Oaten for a two day workshop to
learn an end-to end timelapse capture and
editing workflow. Chris will work through
everything you need to know to start
creating your own timelapse work or to
take your existing skills to the next level.
An emphasis will be placed on learning
the holy grail of timelapse captures in
which shooting starts either side of sunset
or sunrise. Participants using digital
cameras who have progressed beyond
a beginner level are best suited to this
workshop but any level of experience will
be accommodated.
Shimmer is proud to be hosting The Tintype
Traveller for this year’s workshop program.
This unique little caravan will be at a variety of
locations across the festival as the site for some of
the alternative and traditional-process techniques.
Myponga Sunset, Chris Oaten, 2016
The Tintype Traveller is a vintage caravan that has been lovingly converted into a
custom designed darkroom to allow photographers to have a portable darkroom for
traditional photographic processes on location, and as a mobile darkroom for small
group workshops.
It has effective safe-light and ventilation conditions, air-conditioning and heating,
and plenty of workspace for a range of traditional techniques. The Tintype Traveller
lives at Cog Creative Space in Norwood, where it provides an on-site darkroom
for the six resident photographers at the studio. It can also be hired by visiting
photographers as required.

FACILITATOR: CHRISTOPHER HOUGHTON
Sat 17 Sept
You will get a chance to capture images on
film, process the images on-site, and create
a contact sheet or enlargement (time
permitting) of the resulting negative.
Using a large format camera allows the
photographer to slow down the process
of photographic capture whilst opening
up a range of new possibilities for the
image. This workshop is an introduction to
thinking differently, and to the practice of
using a 5x4” camera.

Van Dyke Brown is an alternative
photographic printing process that yields
a rich brown colour. An image is made
by coating cotton paper with the light
sensitive three part solution and placing
this in contact with a negative and
exposing to sunlight. Van Dyke Brown
is a contact printing process where the
image produced is the same size as the
negative. The workshop will cover suitable
negatives (including digital negatives),
paper choice, coating methods and
exposing and processing, including
gold toning.

ALTERNATIVE PROCESS: TINTYPES
FACILITATOR: CYNTHIA GEMUS
Sat 24 Sept
In a time when the immediacy of digital
photography has created a flood of
expendable images, many artists have
chosen to turn to traditional image making
techniques. In this one day workshop,
students will learn the history and basic
practice of the 19th century tintype
process. In this hands-on class, attendees
will learn to coat, sensitize, expose, develop
and varnish aluminium plates to create
one-of- a kind hand-made photographs.
Students will finish the day with several
tintypes created by their own hands
and will receive a detailed handbook
containing all the information they need
to continue making tintypes on their own.
ALTERNATIVE PROCESS: AMBROTYPE
FACILITATOR: ANDREW DEARMAN
Sun 25 Sept
An Ambrotype is a hand-made
photograph on a sheet of glass. Glass
plate negatives were first used in the
early 1850s. It was soon discovered
that if a thin (under-exposed) negative
was placed on a black background, it
produced a one-off positive image. This
workshop will show you how to make
and process the ambrotype photograph,
as well as troubleshoot all the variables
of the complex chemistry.
