Responding to Readings worksheet 7
Competition (chapter 9)
Describe a sport or game to your group members. First, read the description of the
game go below.
Go starts with an empty board. Players take turns putting black or
white stones on the board. The board has 19
lines (up and down) that cross 19 lines (side
to side). The stones are not put in the boxes.
Instead, the stones are put on the intersections,
the place where the lines cross. One rule is,
if you surround your opponent’s stone or
stones, you take them. The object of the game
is to control an area. To score, each player
counts the size of his area, the number of
intersections he controls. Each intersection is
one point. The player with the most points
wins.
To describe your sport or game, provide the following information.
• Where is it played? (Go is played on a board.)
• Can you tell details about it? (The board as 19x19 lines.)
• How is it played? (Players take turns putting stones on the board.)
• Can you tell details? (The stones are placed on intersections, not boxes.)
• Any rules? (If you surround your opponent’s stone, you take it.)
• What’s the object of the game? (The object is to control an area.)
• How to score? (Each player counts the intersections in his area.)

1. When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom...
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom...
2. Every night in my dreams
I see you, I feel you
That is how I know you go on.
Far across the distance
And spaces between us
You have come to show you go on...
3. Such a feelin’s coming over me
There is wonder in most everything I see
Not a cloud in the sky,
Got the sun in my eyes
And I won’t be surprised if it’s a dream.
Everything I want the world to be
Is now coming true especially for me
And the reason is clear,
It’s because you are here
You’re the nearest thing
to heaven that I’ve seen...
4. Almost heaven, West Virginia,
Blue Ridge Mountain, Shenandoah River,
Life is old there, older than the trees,
Younger than the mountains,
blowing like a breeze...
5. And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I’ll say it clear,
I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain.
I’ve lived a life that’s full.
I’ve traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this...
6. When you’re weary (tired)
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all
I’m on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can’t be found...
