What You’re Saying...
Letters to The Editor
“Dear Editor,
Thank you for the nicely focused publication
for our town. The Reporter Herald weekend
entertainment insert has become all about
Longmont and other towns when it once was
locally focused. We have had the privilege of
making Loveland our home since 1974. We
love the town and the folks who make it a great
place to live.
We particularly liked the article on Loveland
Choral Society in the September edition of “
The Best of Loveland.” LCS is a very talented
group. One should remember that these artists
have “day jobs” as well. Your gracious story with
the accompanying photos was spot on. It is my
hope that people will turn out for the concerts
to keep LCS singing!”
— Lynna Adell
notice these things which drives me crazy sometimes; though perhaps your general readership is
not so picky as I! So may I suggest that a bit more
attention be given to the copy by another editor,
while you are working out all the issues in putting
together this lovely magazine!”
— Sincerely, Barbara Teel
“Dear Editor,
On behalf of LCS I want to thank you and your
extraordinary staff for the excellent article and
stunning picture in “The Best of Loveland
Magazine.” The article should generate considerable audience and interest in our upcoming concerts and the continued presence of LCS in our
community. It is exceptionally well put together
and is indeed very professional looking. It will be a
welcome and important addition to our Loveland
cultural events and business promotion. You
should be proud of your effort. We look forward on
working with your amazing team in the future. “
— Cliff Schultz, Music and Artistic Director
of the Loveland Choral Society
“Dear Editor,
Last night I read the new magazine. It’s lovely!
I’ve lived in Loveland since 1978, and of course, I
have my favorite places. 1) Sunny Jim’s
Homemade Candies; 2) Sylvan Dale Ranch; 3)
Benson Park Sculpture Garden; and 4) The Rialto
Theatre.”

of Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County “Dear Editor,

Loveland 360: Easy Day Trips That Don’t Take Very Long
The Chapungu Sculpture Park…
An artful oasis in Loveland
A
rt, culture, performances, events, wildlife
and walking trails are all incorporated into
this 26-acre sanctuary sculpture event
park. The Chapungu (pronounced cha-poongoo) is located on the east side of the Promenade
Shops at Centerra right off Centerra Parkway &
Hwy 34 in Loveland.
The Chapungu Sculpture
Park at Centerra is nestled
directly east of the stores with an
impressive and wheelchair accessible walking path winding
about water features, trees,
flowers, wildlife and over 80
hand carved stone sculptures
created by artists from
Zimbabwe. The “Chapungu”
was named after an African
eagle in which the people of
Zimbabwe honor as a good
omen. The park provides a retreat from the retail stores without even leaving the parking lot.
The Art of Family
These incredible sculptures
are incorporated along the
walking trails with a woven
theme of “family”. The sculptures are encouraged to be
touched to feel the spirit, but of
course, respectfully not
harmed. Each piece displays a
story about the sculpture and
the culture of Zimbabwe and
the love of family.
Nature – Wildlife - Trails
True to its’ name Chapungu –
“eagle”, one may spot various
birds of prey including the
majestic eagle soaring above.
Eagles, hawks, rabbits, birds,
fox, deer and frogs.

Performances - Events
The Chapungu is also a gathering place for Loveland
fundraisers, events, weddings
and concerts. The park has a
covered stage with a glorious
lawn for spectators to toss
down a blanket and enjoy the
music while watching the sunset behind the Front Range
Majesties. It hosts The Sounds
of Centerra Concert Series and
music events featuring local
acts and entertainment. It can
also be booked for your local
fundraiser or intimate event.
Family Gatherings with
Loved Ones
The Chapungu was designed
to embrace quality family time
with your loved ones. It can
also serve as a refuge for the
incredibly supportive yet bored
husband that needs a quick
escape while his wife finishes
shopping and then she can join
him for a romantic evening
walk. It also provides a beautiful backdrop for a family photo,
tranquil thoughts and peaceful
moments with nature.
Plan some extra time on your
next shopping trip to Centerra
to enjoy the many benefits to
this free artful oasis. L

chill fills the air while the red, orange and yellow colors in the trees remind us that fall is
here. It also means Halloween is right around the corner with its visions of scary creatures
and ghosts. There are many opportunities in our area to celebrate the season. You can
visit a local pumpkin patch, find your way out of a corn maze, take a creepy walk in the woods at
night or explore one of the real haunted buildings where people have seen and felt ghosts.
Wild Boar in Fort Collins,1510 South College Ave, Fort Collins
Jack Lanterns, 2318 S. CR 5, Fort Collins
Jack Lanterns has activities for children during the day like a bounce
house, pumpkin patch, farm animals, corn maze, playground, and
hay rides. When the sun goes down, the kid friendly activities turn
frightening and the corn maze crawls with monsters and creatures
out to get you.
Loveland Feed and Grain, 130 West 3rd Street, Loveland
Agriculture was a main industry in Loveland early in its history. The
mill was built in 1892 and is said to be haunted by spirits of those
early years. According to Jim Beard, founder of Loveland
Paranormal Society, spirits sometimes return to the location they are
most familiar with. Jim has captured EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) evidence of a young boy, girl, and possibly an older male individual. He has had quite a few unexplained experiences in this
location. During one visit a heavy metal door that went into the boiler
room slammed shut on him. Another time when he had someone
filming with him, the camera man’s dust mask got pulled down. Then
another investigator who had a flashlight around his neck felt it move
while he was sitting still.

Not So Haunted Haunts...
Rialto Theater, 228 East 4th Street, Loveland
The theater opened in 1920 and was said to be the finest theater
north of Denver. The Loveland Downtown Development
Authority now owns the building which is believed to be haunted.
Legend has it that during the original construction, a worker died
when the scaffolding he was standing on, collapsed beneath
him. It is said he likes to hang out in the projection room. In her
book, Northern Colorado Ghost Stories, Nancy Hansford shares
an experience by a former theater manager. The manager, a
reporter and two paranormal investigators were searching for
spirits. At the projection room, the manager unlocked the room
several times with her key, but the lock wouldn’t open. She knew
she had the right key and the lock worked. She asked the spirit
for permission to enter and the lock clicked open. Once in the
room, the investigators found a high level of electromagnetic
energy which is supposed to signify the presence of ghosts.

In 1899 photographer Harry Bradley and his wife came to Fort
Collins. Bradley eventually bought a car dealership. He built the
house that is now Wild Boar in 1924. Over the years it has been a
fraternity house, an office space and in 2007 it became the
restaurant/coffeehouse that it is today. In her book, Ghosts of Fort
Collins, Lori Juszack says the spirit of a little girl also resides in the
building. Juszack explains that the owner set up her office in the
attic. She began to see a little girl playing peekaboo around
furniture and corners in the office. Originally the owner thought it
was a living girl until the figure disappeared. Others, like a
repairman, have seen the little girl too and sometimes people
hear her giggling and running around.

Loveland and Brinkman Partners Forge the Foundry Downtown
I
Renderings Courtesy of OZ Architecture
by Brad Shannon
f you spend any time in downtown Loveland – or even if you just happen to be passing
through – it’s hard to miss some significant changes happening in the block bordered by Lincoln
and Cleveland on the east and west, and First Street and Third Street to the south and north.
Ultimately, the vision is for a new part of
downtown that appeals to downtown residents and workers, all of Loveland, and
visitors to the city. A multi-screen movie
theater, hotel, a public plaza and stage
and mixed use retail and restaurant space,
combined with offices and residences is
part of an effort designed to attract and
keep people visiting downtown. The work
being done has been a long time coming,
but, as the demolition/preparation of the
site by Hudspeth Inc., which provides environmental remediation and construction
services, reached completion, the project
continues to progress.
After an extended period to acquire
the property by the City of Loveland last
fall, it selected Brinkman Partners to move
forward, with an initial negotiation period/
agreement. That time saw the two parties
working together to establish milestones,
a site plan, budget and finance plans,
and host several public events to take
input from citizens and allow them to provide feedback on early concepts being
presented. “It’s been a long time getting to
this point, a project of this scale has a lot of
challenges for sure, but it’s great to see it all
come together,” Mike Scholl, economic
development manager and project lead,
for the City.
24 The Best of Loveland & S Larimer County
Selecting a Name
In recent weeks, the project with the
working name of the Downtown Loveland
South Catalyst Project got a formal name –
The Foundry. That brand came out of
collaboration by the full project team
including Brinkman, OZ Architecture and
Russell + Mills Studio.
The overall goal was to create a name
that would embody Loveland and its
history, in particular the important elements
of art and culture. There was also an
interest in something that would depict
strength for downtown and Loveland in
general. Tie that into the local sculpture
industry, including the casting and welding
that are part of that process, and Foundry
rose to the top of the group’s list. “The team
loved it,” notes Kate Baker, Brinkman’s
Director of Marketing & Communication.
“It felt great, we got good feedback, and
the brand accomplishes exactly what we
were aiming for with the name.”
October 2016
What’s Planned
When complete, the project will include
59,000 square feet of office space or a
90-room hotel along 1st Street, perhaps one
building, perhaps two, at two and three
stories; a 460-space parking structure with
four and a half levels, one underground; the
north side will feature a central plaza with
landscaping, perhaps a water feature or
fountains, and a stage for entertainment
events; and two mixed-use buildings will be
along Cleveland and Lincoln. Little Man Ice
Cream is currently in negotiations to put a
location in one of their iconic giant milk can
buildings on the plaza.
The Cleveland building, on the west
side, will be a five-story structure with retail
and restaurant space and 94 residential
units. The Lincoln building will be smaller,
with 46 units of residential, along with retail
spaces at street level that will feature entrances on Lincoln and toward the plaza to
allow for patio dining. A total of 15,000
square feet of retail space is expected. A
bistro-style movie theater is part of the mix,
and although the deal is not complete, it is
expected to have five screens and 625 seats
in 25,000 square feet.
Altogether, the investment from public
and private sources for the project will total
approximately $75 million.
www.TheBestofLoveland.com
The Process
The Next Steps
The entire project has moved forward
though a number of evolutions. There was
a preliminary design that received, Jay
Hardy, Brinkman Partners COO of Real
Estate Services, says, “good community
input.” Three different community meetings gathered public feedback that led to a
reduction of the height of the parking
structure, and the addition of more parking
spaces. “We heard loud and clear
concerns that it was too tall,” Hardy recalls.
In August, demolition and moving a
couple of existing buildings from the site
was completed. As this story was being finalized mid-September, the temporary
construction fence was being removed
and temporary parking at 270 East 3rd
were open again to the public. Although it
may appear work has been paused, there
is considerable effort underway to finalize
contracts and financial plans as well as
continued work on design elements.
Along the way, the team evaluated the
local inventory and planned space considerations, the site plan and overall layout of
the project. They learned, with one
proposed plan to close 3rd Street, that it
was important to keep that corridor open
from City Hall to the east across the way to
the western side of downtown. “With lots of
smaller tweaks along the way,” reports
Hardy, “We are on Plan F thanks to a lot of
help, input, commentary and support from
the community, city staff, city council
members, and others.”
For now, Loveland City Council has
moved out the timeline for final agreements
by three months to await the result of the
November 8 election, which includes two
ballot measures asking voters within the
boundary of the City’s Downtown
Development Authority to approve two
ways to fund the DDA and projects within
the Downtown District.
www.TheBestofLoveland.com
If the ballot measures pass, things will
move forward rather quickly. If it fails, the
project will still move ahead, but the City will
need to come up with an alternate financing plan. Meanwhile, in October, Brinkman
will go back to City Council to move the
next phase of the project forward.
Current plans project a ground breaking sometime in the first or second quarter
of next year.

Perfect Setting Owner (Left) Becky Salgado and
Manager Sherry Nicks (Right).
Annie Schoen loves her community and loves people.
Her store, Anna Bananas (her nickname as a child), is tucked
away on the south side of Loveland past the Fairgrounds. It is
an eclectic mix of antique and refurbished furniture, along
with other fun home accessories and even some clothing and
jewelry. Hidden treasures are found in all the nooks and crannies of the store.
Schoen began in this business by hosting a small booth in
another shop in Loveland. “I started doing this because I enjoyed spending time with people who were also interested in
finding groovy stuff.”
She enjoys the history and stories that come with the
pieces she finds. Her store is filled with items that transport
people back to their childhood and conjure wonderful memories for them. She doesn’t have a favorite era for furniture because she said, “I enjoy furniture from all periods, because I
enjoy people from all periods!” Schoen describes the style
from her own home as, “cat bed, dog scratch modern."
Giving back to the community is important to Schoen and
she does this by hosting events at her store. She hosts a
Nickel Auction every other month, which is a fun ladies’ night
out along with other meetings like Bunco and Book Clubs.

On most weekdays, Becky Salgado divides her time between her full-time job as a hospital chaplain with a local

“This is my outlet. It’s where I get to play.” Before opening her

Perfect Setting has been open just over 6 months. She gets to
use her staging background when arranging the furniture in
the store. The flow allows customers to easily see how certain
pieces will look in their own home.
When Salgado is at the hospital helping people, the store is in
good hands with her manager, Sherry Nicks who has years of
experience in the industry. For consignment, they take gently
used, high quality furniture. You won’t find particle board
pieces here. Salgado says many people who come in are
surprised by the quality of the furniture she offers. She loves
the uniqueness of the different pieces that people bring to the
store. Mid-century modern furniture from the 1960’s-1970’s is
popular right now and she would love to see more of that. For
her own home, Salgado likes the shabby chic look of French
Country, as well as the dark woods of the Tuscan style.

The BEST Birthday Parties
are in Loveland
by Christa D. Reed, Editor
I
f you’re like me, when it’s time to start planning your children’s birthday party you struggle
to figure out what to do that will be fun for the kids yet stress-free and easy for adults, not to
mention not having to deal with cleaning up a huge mess afterwards!
Having four sons (including twins) I
have had the opportunity to host numerous
children’s birthday parties over the years
like roller skating, bowling, glow golf,
movies, trampoline park, indoor swimming,
BBQs and even one at a fire station. So
when my youngest son’s 9-year-old birthday rolled around (it seems to happen
every year) I found the perfect place, right
here in Loveland! Loveland Laser Tag
(LLT) is a fantastic place to have a birthday
party, corporate event or even take the family for a super fun afternoon. Tucked way
back in the Denver Avenue Commercial
Park (401 Denver Ave near Grimm Brothers
Brewhouse) LLT offers a massive 3-level,
5,700 sq. foot laser arena, indoor ropes
course, bumper cars, 4D motion theatre,
laser maze, climbing wall, an arcade and a
snack bar.
I went to their website: http://laserfuncenter.com/ and saw all the cool attractions
they have and then checked out their birthday party options. Online booking is fast,
easy and convenient and include all the
details you need like which party packages
you can select and the use of their large,
private party rooms! When we arrived, we
were greeted by our Party Coach, Noah
who immediately shared his enthusiasm for
his job by the way he welcomed each and
every young guest. As they arrived he
would ask them what their official “name”
would be for the evening. My son came up
with “LaserMaster5” and this would be his
name he used throughout the evening and
inside their amazing laser tag arena.
If you haven’t been inside LLT yet you really
need to go. Their three-level laser tag
arena (the largest in Colorado) has an an-
28 The Best of Loveland & S Larimer County
cient Egyptian theme while players explore
the ruins and can choose a wide variety of
games to play while inside. There are three
levels with all sorts of twists and turns that
players can enjoy while hunting down their
opponents all while the computer is keeping score. In addition to their huge laser tag
arena, they also have a two player laser
maze where players have to navigate
through the puzzle of lasers as quickly as
possible without breaking any beams. If
you do, you’re penalized with time being
added to your score. The lower your time,
the better.
LLT also has an indoor ropes course
with 11 challenging elements that are set
high above their Spin Zone (bumper cars)
and partially above their huge video arcade. The staff is very helpful and safety is
their number one priority. They made sure
all the young party guests were safe and
secure in their safety harnesses and they
explained to everyone how to use their
track system to walk the course before
heading up to the top to walk the ropes and
October 2016
challenge themselves to hit every element.
Some of the kids had no problems walking
across the entire course but others didn’t
realize how high up it was and got a little
scared so they didn’t get too far! Noah, our
party coach was with the group the entire
time and was so encouraging to the kids
that were having troubles and made them
feel better.
The 4D motion simulator by far was the
overall party favorite. It was exciting and
thrilling and guests could choose from
eight different 4D experiences that all had a
different theme. The boys selected the
Dino Safari which they all loved and the
adults chose the heart-pounding Speed
Coaster experience. The state-of-the-art
simulator features 3D visuals, surround
sound, 6 axis motion, and wind, bubble
and snow environment effects. With the 3D
glasses we wear it really did feel like we
were actually riding on a speeding roller
coaster up and down and defying gravity!
The visual affects coupled with the motion
of the simulator made for a super exciting
and thrilling experience and everyone
came out of the 4D motion simulator smiling
and laughing so we couldn’t ask for a better
time.
We then headed to the private party
room where we enjoyed tasty pizza made
from scratch in their very own café and bottomless sodas. Our party coach did all the
serving, which allowed for me to visit with
our guests. After singing Happy Birthday
and serving the cake it was time for the
Birthday boy to open his presents! LLT
gave him a special flashing LED cup which
he loved and then it was back out into the

f you haven’t had a chance to stop by the
Loveland Visitor’s Center lately maybe
you should come by for a “visit”. Loveland
is so fortunate in that we have one of the very
BEST visitor centers around and that is in part
due to the energy and enthusiasm that Gary
Light, Visitor Center Manager exudes for his
job and for our city!
I
After retiring from a successful 30-year teaching career (you may have seen Gary
teaching Business and
Marketing at Loveland High
School for 22 years) Gary was
itching to do something new.
He had dabbled a little in Real
Estate with his wife and heard
about the opening at the
Visitor’s Center and thought
this would be a perfect fit for
him. That was four years ago
and Gary is loving every aspect of his job. “I enjoy working with all our 25 volunteers;
our vendors; and I especially
enjoy talking with all the visitors
that come into the center looking for the latest and greatest
information about Loveland,”
says Light. “Working here is a

guests had a fantastic time
which was apparent when nobody wanted to leave. When it
was time to wrap up the
evening, our party coach
Noah, gave me a $5.00 player

they left and then he helped us

LLT was such a fantastic place

one of the best compliments I
received from my son was
when he exclaimed as we
were walking out to the car
after the party, “Mom, that was

Slate… Simply Delicious!
Italian Eatery
by Christa D. Reed
ocated on Cleveland between 5th & 4th streets just south
of the LoDo Artisan Coffee Shop is a brand new gem in
Loveland called Slate, An Italian Eatery. What started as
a longtime dream for owner Chris Kline and fellow chef Jason
Schmitz who Chris trained under, has now become a reality and
the people of Loveland are quite happy to welcome such an
authentic, locally owned Italian eatery in the heart of downtown.
L
Slate Italian Eatery opened in May of
2016 and was the concept of true from
scratch cooking because so many
restaurants have gone to premade heat
and serve food.
The owners of Slate wanted to take
themselves back to the roots of cooking so
they pride themselves on having fresh,
local ingredients every day. “We like to
think of our food as Italian comfort food. You
know, the kind your mom would have made
(if she were Italian),” says Chris Kline.
The ambience of the restaurant is warm
and inviting and is perfect for a business
lunch or romantic dinner. For us, we
decided to check out Slate for lunch and
we arrived before noon so it wasn’t too
busy yet. We were greeted by a friendly
and welcoming staff and had a wonderful
table tucked away near the front window.
There was a wide variety of appetizers
on the menu ranging from Prosciutto e
Melon, Bruschetta, Calamari and Mussels
& Crème to Melanzani (roasted eggplant
& Anaheim pepper spread on a crostini)
and Italian Meats & Cheeses. There was
also a good selection of salads and Slate
serves up a Tuscun style three-bean soup
daily and also offers guests another option
with their soup of the day.

On the lunch menu they feature five
Paninis served with a side of soup or
tossed greens and each offering a special
and unique flare including their Wild
Mushroom; Classic; Meatball, BLT and
www.TheBestofLoveland.com
their Apple Panini with spiced apple,
walnut spread and taleggio cheese. My
husband ordered their Meatball panini
with tossed greens and the Italian meatballs were made from scratch and he
thought they were delicious.
Their lunch entrees featured four distinct dishes like their Cioppino; Maccaroni
with Crab; Bolognese and a delicious
Chicken Parmesan that I ordered that was
served with fresh cauliflower. Guests can
also select from a Steak Fiorentina that has
a special dry herb rub and order either a
12-ounce New York Strip or a 20-ounce
Bone-in-Ribeye.
Their dinner menu expands with more
selections and they have an extensive
wine list and also serve up specialty
cocktails. They also do breakfast and
offer specials like a three egg omelet;
pancakes; eggs benedict and even a
lobster breakfast. L

A Color Makeover… Fun for Fall!

ear-engine, air cooled Volkswagen
Beetles were built from 1938 to 2003,
and over 20 million were manufactured
and sold worldwide after the inception of the
car in Germany before World War II. A successor, commonly called a “new Beetle”, with
coolant, a front engine, and front-wheel drive,
came onto the market in 1997. R
Such a car is what I picked
up at Mitchell International
Airport in Milwaukee recently
to drive on a midwest
vacation. It was a 2016
Turbocharged Sandstorm
Yellow metallic unit with
“Dune” (think dune buggy,
circa 1961) equipment specified, including a rear spoiler,
raised suspension, ten-spoke
polished alloy wheels, exclusive bumpers and air intakes,
black exterior cladding, aluminum pedal covers, and spe-
cial badging and decals.
Power for my front wheel
drive test car was supplied by a
1.8 liter, 170 horsepower (184 lb.
ft. of torque) four cylinder gas engine with an EPA mileage rating
of 25-city, 34-highway, 28-combined MPG and a 14.5 gallon fuel
tank. The transmission on hand
was a six-speed automatic, and
it seemed sturdy and enjoyable.
For having a turbocharger, the
engine had a definite grumble to
it, belying the high RPM turbo operating in the engine compart-

ment. Turbochargers whir at
about 150,000 revolutions per
minute - roughly 30 times as fast
as the engine. They are nice in
Colorado, spinning faster at
high altitude and mitigating
power loss that can be associated with naturally-aspirated
(i.e. fuel injected) engines. I
can't say I hated having turbocharged power in Illinois and
Wisconsin - the technology is
just great.
Inside the four passenger

buckets with yellow piping
and stitching, Bluetooth connections, pushbutton starter,
flat-bottomed steering wheel,
rear view camera, and satellite
radio. The theme inside was
tasteful and coordinated well
with the outside styling. Beetle
"Dune" styling was great,
featured a wider track, honeycomb grill, LED tail lights,
and while on our trip several
tourists stopped by to
comment on our ride.
Fall is in the air and it’s
always a fun time for a color
makeover. Rose gold is the
perfect fall color for those who
want to do something different for fall but don’t want to
make the commitment to dark
tones or bright reds. So we
tried some Rose gold on my
model Hannah. I lightened
Hannah and kept her hair
healthy with the help of
Olaplex, and then used a conditioner based color to get the
rose gold. I shampooed her hair
with Trinity by Surface and deep
conditioned it with the Surface
Bassu Masque to rehydrate the
hair after the lightening.
We prepped her hair with
Jump Mouse for Volume and
Bliss for smoothness and round
brushed it, then used Bassu Oil
(our favorite product!) once dry
for shine and added heat protection as well as frizz control.
Once I curled her hair we finished it off with the Sea Salt
Texturizing Spray and the
Surface Curls Finishing Spray.
All of the Surface Products are
organic, vegan, gluten free, contain heat protectants (except the
shampoos), and are completely
sulfate and paraben free as
well.

Acceleration of the 3,093
lb. VW was great fun, road
manners were on target, and
handling/guidance were fine,
as well. It’s a pretty quiet sedan
and visibility is fine. List price
was $25,065.00 for the 2016
that I drove and that included
freight. The only optional uncharge was for the Sandstorm
paint, at $250.00. The VW
Beetle has a niche market and
doesn’t sell over 400,000 per
year (in the U.S.!) like the old
days, but still has a nice following and a fan in this reviewer. L

Escape Games have been around for over a decade but more
recently are gaining mainstream popularity. In most escape
room games (both online and in real life), they involve a theme
where players are emerged into a story line with an end goal in
mind. Because of the physical nature, real-life escape games
were able to add a time limit which brings out a competitive
nature in some. Teams want to try to beat the fastest time or
simply escape before the time runs out.
First, a brief history on the Live Escape games… Escape
games are where a team of people are locked inside a room.
They must solve a series of puzzles, find clues, and use critical
thinking to escape the room within a fixed time limit. Live
There’s a theory that people are interested because it’s
interactive and a new form of fun that they are not used to.
People no longer want to sit and watch something happen,
they want to do it! L

Time Escape... Loveland’s newest Escape Room which
opened this past May is located at 770 N. Lincoln Avenue in
Loveland inside a beautiful historic house which was built in
1902. Owners, Rob and Krista Hull wanted to create an
escape room business they could run with their four kids so
after experiencing an escape room in London three years
ago they fell in love with the concept and quickly began
working on bringing their idea to fruition and proudly opened
their business Time Escape.
Each room inside is unique with lots of character and is
themed based on an “era” of time. With themed escape rooms
like “Gold Rush”; “Totally 80s”; and “Poisoning at the Palace”
players select the room they will be “locked” into for one hour
and they must find all the clues and solve the puzzles in order
to unlock the exit door.
“We love that our escape rooms are all family-friendly and
the experience is something you can do together,” says
Krista Hull. Time Escape is a family owned and operated
local business with Hull’s teenage children working there and
her younger children are also involved in the business.

Q: The Live Escape Experience was the very first one in
Loveland and is located at 333 E. Fourth St. and occupies the
basement with space for two large escape rooms that make
the player feel like they just walked onto a movie set. Owners,
Kris Maloy and his wife, Jolie Beth Boudreaux both have creative and artistic backgrounds. Kris is a music professor and
composer and Jolie Beth has a degree in theater so they both
have created a very unique and engaging experience that includes more of a narrative and tells a story that puts the players
into the script as live characters!
“We wanted to create something completely different than
the typical escape room,” says Maloy. “It’s almost like we want
the player to step into the ending sequence of a movie and they
are truly part of creating the narrative.”
Even the music that was all composed by Maloy, will take
players through an exciting, heart-pounding movie-scene that
adds to the heightened senses you feel when trying to solve the
puzzles and open the door to “escape” in only one hour!
Q: The Live Escape Experience will be celebrating their
one-year anniversary this November. Visit: http://www.escapefromq.com/ for more information.

Loveland Oktoberfest Celebration
We headed out to Grimm Brothers Brewhouse last month for their
Loveland Oktoberfest celebration that featured lots of beer-drinking and merrymaking! There were huge crowds for both days of
this annual festival named after Ok•to•ber•fest (pronounced:
äkˈtōbərˌfest/) the traditional autumn festival held in Munich,
Germany. Everyone enjoyed the food, entertainment and of
course… the beer! Several of our local Loveland breweries were
represented and the Loveland Kiwanis Club hosted a fundraiser
game called “Beer-Schalagen” (aka: Hammerschlagen) which
was a fun game with a pointed hammer and nails. Based after the
German word "Hammerschlagen" which is a verb and means,
loosely, to beat with a hammer, and that is exactly what they did!
So, cheers or as the Germans say "prost!" to another fantastic
event at this year’s Loveland Oktoberfest.
