16 January 2012 perfSONAR MDM Service Configuration Recommendations The purpose of this document is to ensure that the proper elements of the monitoring infrastructure and their configurations are in place to provide consistent perfSONAR MDM monitoring service support and delivery to the GÉANT Service Area users by participating domains. Configuration recommendations The purpose of this section is to ensure that the proper elements of the monitoring infrastructure and their configurations are in place to provide consistent GN3 perfSONAR MDM monitoring service. Diagnostic Use Case Measurement Points Capabilities This section describes configuration parameters for Measurement Points. One-Way Delay, Jitter, Packet Loss Location: Near the interconnection points Measurement Tools: HADES Network interface: 1 Gps Time synch: Clock accuracy of 1 millisecond Achievable Bandwidth Location: Near the interconnection points Measurement Tools: BWCTL MP with Iperf Network interface: 1 Gps or 10 Gbps TCP Stack: CUBIC Time synch: Clock accuracy 10 millisecond Measurements Recommendations This section describes recommendations for configuring on-demand and scheduled measurements. One-way Delay, Jitter, Packet Loss Scheduled Inter-domain Rate: 9 packets/second Packet size: 41 bytes Inter packet gap: 20 ms Duration: 1 s Frequency: 1 minute Intra-domain Rate: 9 packets/second Packet size: 41 bytes Inter packet gap: 20 ms Duration: 1 s Frequency: 1 minute 1 On-Demand Max rate: 10 packets/second Packet size: 41 bytes Max duration: 120 s Max rate: 10 packets/second Packet size: 41 bytes Max duration: 120 s 16 January 2012 Achievable Bandwidth TCP Tests Scheduled TCP window size: up to 64 MB Traffic marcation: Best Effort (0x0) Duration: 30 seconds Frequency: every 6 hours TCP window size: up to 64MB Traffic marcation: Best Effort (0x0) Duration: 30 seconds Frequency: every 3 hours On-Demand TCP Window size: up to 64 MB Traffic marcation: Best Effort (0x0) Duration: min 120 seconds Inter-domain Scheduled Negotiated Intra-domain Negotiated On-Demand Duration: 10 seconds Bandwidth: max 100 Mbps Duration: 10 seconds Bandwidth: max 100 Mbps Inter-domain Intra-domain TCP window size: up to 64 MB Traffic marcation: Best Effort (0x0) Duration: min 120 seconds UDP Tests Measurement Storage This section describes recommendations for measurement storage. On-demand Tests Measurement Storage No measurement storage is required in this use case. Scheduled Tests Measurement Storage Store a minimum of 12 months of non-summarised format for both One-Way Delay and Achievable Bandwidth Tests. Scheduled Inter-domain results of measurements between a domain and its upper tier must be stored and exposed by the appropriate Measurement Archive of the upper tier domain. Inter-domain results of measurements between two adjacent domains of the same tier must be stored and exposed by the appropriate Measurement Archive of the source domain of the test. Intra-domain Intra-domain results must be stored by the domain and exposed via its own Measurement Archive. For more information about deployment scenarios read “perfSONAR MDM Service Architecture and Scenarios” document.
