PASTORS CORNER
Confirmation: Growing beyond a self-centered spirituality
This weekend, our confirmation students participated in a retreat to prepare
them for Confirmation this spring. Therefore, I wanted to share with you some
thoughts on this important sacrament. Confirmation is the fourth and final
sacrament of initiation into the Catholic Church. Baptism, Reconciliation and
Holy Communion are the first three.
We are born spiritually in the sacrament of Baptism. As we practice the virtues of faith and hope and love and
as we unite with Christ in His Church we also grow in grace and goodness. But at
this stage our spiritual life, like the life of a child, is largely self-centered. We tend to
be preoccupied with the needs of our own soul, with the effort to “be good.” As we
grow in our faith, as we begin to understand what it means to share in the mystical
life of Christ’s Body, we begin to live our spirituality for others. In Confirmation we
receive a special grace by which our faith is deepened and strengthened, so that it
will be strong enough not only for our own needs but for the needs of others with
whom we shall try to share it.
At adolescence a child begins to assume the responsibilities of adulthood. He begins
to see his place in the total family picture and in the community at large. Similarly,
the confirmed Christian begins to see more clearly his responsibility to Christ for his
neighbor. He becomes deeply concerned with the welfare of Christ-in-the-world and the welfare of Christ-inhis-neighbor.
It is in this sense that Confirmation is a spiritual “growing up.” The confirmed Christian goes forth joyfully,
strong in his faith; he feels a continual concern for others. He feels a restless discontent unless he is doing
something worthwhile for others—something to ease their burdens in this life, and something to make more
secure their promise of life eternal. His words and his actions proclaim to those around him: “Christ lives, and
He lives for you.”
The essential part of the Confirmation rite is when the bishop or priest places his hand upon the head of each
individual. The bishop traces the sign of the cross on the person’s forehead—having first dipped his thumb in
the holy oil called chrism—and says, “Be sealed with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.” The newly confirmed person
responds by saying, “Amen.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church lists the seven gifts as follows: Wisdom,
Counsel, Fortitude (courage), Knowledge, Piety (reverence) and Fear of the Lord (wonder and awe.)
Baptism united us with Christ and offered us our place in eternal life. Without Confirmation we can get to
heaven, but the going will be much rougher. If you never received the sacrament of Confirmation, I urge you to
call our RCIA directors, Kathy and Ben Prestia (number is in the directory of the bulletin) or call the Faith
Formation Office to see what you have to do to complete your sacraments.

VESTIBULE PROJECT
WINE DISTRIBUTION
As we prepare to begin our Vestibule
Renovation on Monday, February 6th
we ask for your patience for the
interruption and inconvenience the
renovation will cause. The beginning
of the project will concentrate on the
vestibule and renovation of the
church restrooms. In the interim the restrooms in the
Msgr. Pierce Hall will be open and available for use.
St. Louise de Marillac will observe the flu season by not
distributing wine at any Mass beginning this weekend
until the flu season is over.
The vestibule project has been a long time coming with
many delays but I have to thank our parishioners who
have given and continue to give generously to the Capital
Campaign. Without you, the vision for the renovations
could not have gotten off the ground. If you would like to
donate to the project we welcome
your contribution. Please consider
giving on our parish web site
www.stlouisedm.org under the “Give”
tab on the right hand side.
Thank you for your support,
Father Robert Fulton
PRISON AND DETENTION MINISTRY
The Prison and Detention Ministry—Prayer and Support
Group will meet Thursday, February 9th from 7:00 PM to
8:30 PM in the St. Louise de Marillac Conference Room,
located in the Parish Center.
Our hope is that any members of our parish who have
loved ones or friends who are incarcerated will join us to
pray for them and to gather support from the parish.
Meetings are open to all members of our parish
community. As a parish community, we welcome all to
join us to give spiritual and emotional support to what is a
very stressful and isolating time for all involved.
All are welcome.
COMMUNION
If you are unable to attend Mass, Communion can be
brought to you. Please call our Parish Office and ask for
Sister Nancy at (626) 915-7873.
THIS WEEKS HIGHLIGHTS
Together in Mission Campaign Launch “Be the Light of Christ”
Next weekend, the Together in Mission annual appeal will launch.
This is a great opportunity to put your love into action. At every
Mass we will hear from Antonio Felix from Nativity School in Los
Angeles, about the importance of sharing our gifts with others. We
are in this together—the mission of helping our fellow brothers
and sisters and we are all asked to share the light of Christ with
others. For those of you that have made gifts in the past, be on the
lookout for a special mailing from our Archdiocesan leaders asking
you to renew your gift.
Please mail in your gift directly to the Together in Mission office to
ensure that you’re counted among those that have answered this
vital call. Our parish has been tasked with raising $140,600. I am
confident that each of you will prayerfully consider sharing the
abundant gifts that God has shared with each of us.

THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS
Welcome Teresa Culjak
My name is Teresa Culjak and I’ve just arrived from Sydney, Australia to commence the new position as the
Director of Faith Formation at St Louise de Marillac Catholic Parish.
For the past 17 years, I have been working in various roles for the Catholic Church at both a national and
international level. These roles have included working at Natural Family Planning, the Catholic Chaplaincy at the
University of Sydney and the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine for the Archdiocese of Sydney. I also hold a
Bachelor of Theology.
With a heart to bring His Kingdom, I’ve done various missionary work throughout Portugal, France, Netherlands,
Croatia and Ireland. I’ve served two years as a missionary in NET Ministries, and completed studies at the
Emmanuel School of Mission in Rome, Italy.
I welcome and am happy to receive any ideas or thoughts you may have regarding faith formation at the parish. I
am new to the country, city and parish and would love to meet you. Please feel free to visit the Faith Formation
Office and say hello.
I am unable to be at the Sunday Masses this weekend to greet each of you and introduce myself personally. This
weekend I will be away with the young people of the parish at their first Confirmation retreat. Please keep them in
your prayers as they seek the Lord who is Lord of all.
It is with great joy that I take on this new role as we journey together with Christ to build a civilization of love.
In prayer,
Teresa Culjak

Reporting abuse is the right thing to do
Child abuse can happen anywhere, even in the home, and
for families placed in this horrible situation, reporting
abuse can be very difficult, but it is critical to do so in
order to protect children. Adults must first act to stop the
abuse by being alert to warning signs. If discovered,
report abuse to the proper authorities. For more
information on how to report abuse, request a copy of
the VIRTUS© article “When the Right Choice is Difficult”
