Message from the Captain
Dear Friends of The Salvation Army,
I know how busy we are in life, so we appreciate you taking time
out of your busy schedule to consider the future of The Salvation
Army here in Pitt County.
Often, those in troubling circumstances feel adrift without an
anchor; they long for a safe harbor. For thousands of people in Pitt
County, The Salvation Army has become refuge from the storms that they encounter. In navigating the waters
of increasing need, The Salvation Army has a vision to strengthen our ability to be a harbor of hope.
Every day, we encounter those who need help in our community. A mother comes to us for help with her utility
bill after receiving a cut-off notice. A hungry family eats breakfast with us when they simply cannot afford to
buy it for themselves. Two brothers spend the evening playing with positive friends rather than being at home
alone.
For much of the past 85 years, we have faithfully served from the same humble location. We have been able
to miraculously expand our services through the ongoing generosity of our community and our reliance on the
Lord. However, our current location that has served as the harbor of hope for many is now limiting the impact
we can make.
Today, the reality is that needs are increasing. Currently, more than 24% of our neighbors are living in poverty.
The youth of our community need positive role models. More families are facing challenges related to
unemployment and hunger. Without expanding our capacity, we face the prospect of having individuals walk
away from us without having their needs met. Meeting human needs is why we exist.
Many in Pitt County come to us for hope, and we want to be sure they find it here.
It is my hope and prayer that you will consider partnering with us as we continue to be the “Harbor of Hope”
for our neighbors, the citizens of Pitt County.
Blessings,
John C. Sikes

Dear Friends and Supporters,
Making a difference in someone’s life is the core value of The Salvation Army. For years, The Salvation Army has
provided basic needs for those in desperate situations throughout the Pitt County community.
As co-chairs of the Capital Campaign, we have had the opportunity to experience how The Salvation Army
exemplifies its mission to “Do the Most Good” in everyday life.
The focus of this Campaign is to expand our community outreach to continue to meet these ever growing
needs. If you have not been the recipient of the good works of The Salvation Army, then you are blessed.
However, for tens of thousands in Pitt County, The Salvation Army has been the blessing as families have been
served in their greatest time of need.
The undertaking of this project is immense, but so are the needs of Pitt County and the rewards that will manifest through the provision of services.
We hope that you will join us in the endeavor to make a difference in someone’s life, building a lasting legacy
of hope for Pitt County residents.
Sincerely,
Don Parrott

“Thank God for The Salvation Army, touching lives and strengthening families in
need each and every day in Greenville. We have a growing community, nearing a
population of over 100,000 in the coming half-decade. Never has the need been
clearer, and never the opportunity been greater in the city than today. Men,
women and children are truly in need of God’s love, motivation and inspiration.
We stand together with The Salvation Army, the mission of this organization and
appreciate your support.”
Steven Ballard, Chancellor, East Carolina University
“I wholeheartedly support the proposed educational programs envisioned for
The Salvation Army’s new campus, especially those planned for at-risk children.

“I am writing to express my support for The Salvation Army’s Capital Campaign.
The Salvation Army supports Greenville and the eastern part of North Carolina
in a variety of ways. It gives assistance in countless areas throughout the region
including supporting our youth and providing hunger relief. The Salvation Army’s
impact on thousands of individuals and families each year in eastern North
Carolina does not go unnoticed. The mission of The Salvation Army is something
we all should rally around and support. I send my best as the Capital Campaign is
launched.”

Ruffin McNeill, Head Football Coach,
East Carolina University
“I am a big advocate of The Salvation Army. I feel The Salvation Army’s moral
code and strong convictions make it a successful organization that truly benefits
our community. By acknowledging God and beliefs of the Christian faith, The
Salvation Army has a spirited base that reaches out into the public, whether it be
collecting donations or those in need. I believe it is important that an organization has a strong backbone and is able to rely on our Lord Jesus Christ to facilitate its mission and impact in our local community. I know The Salvation Army has positive effects in
Greenville and eastern NC, and I support its need to expand.”
Jeff Compher, Athletic Director, East Carolina University
“My family and I have lived in many places across our great country, and in
each city and town, The Salvation Army has been there to serve those in need. I
served on a local advisory board and learned firsthand how The Salvation Army
works behind the scene to help local families who need assistance. Therefore, if
you care about your community, I cannot think of a more deserving organization
to support. Your contribution will allow The Salvation Army of Greenville to continue their efforts to assist those who are less fortunate.”
We Mentor
Transforming Lives through Our Legacy
The Salvation Army recognizes the value of the youth and children in its community and chooses to invest
in their lives to provide each child with hope for a successful future. Through the various activities extended to the youth of Pitt County, every child is provided with the support needed to become a respectable,
responsible citizen.
Creating a legacy for our youth and children requires investment by our community and partnership with
those who desire to experience lives being transformed. As The Salvation Army seeks to offer even more
opportunities for these youth and children, the future Community Center will lend additional space necessary to provide the community youth with a summer day camp, after-school program, individualized tutoring, as well as weekend recreation. Expansion of these programs will enable us to serve more students in
Pitt County as we strive to meet the needs of the entire family unit.
The Need
Children in Pitt County are in need of a safe and nurturing environment where they can gather together for
fellowship and support while they learn new skills, develop new friendships and create lasting memories!
What We Do
Through age appropriate programs designed specifically for elementary and middle/high school students,
The Salvation Army provides the children of the community with the opportunity to participate in programs that incorporate character education, skill building, music and arts, service projects, games and
recreation, as well as offer opportunities to earn college scholarships!
How You Can Help
By partnering with The Salvation Army through the Capital Campaign, you will be directly impacting the
youth of Pitt County. Through your contribution, the youth and children ministries will expand, enabling
more children in the community to participate in these free programs and be provided with opportunities
that are not available elsewhere in the county.
We Serve
Changing Lives is our Business
An outreach of The Salvation Army, The Mission
Station was created with the intent to serve the
least fortunate in the community by providing a
hot meal, a safe and nurturing environment, and
opportunity to rest and a venue for the homeless to
wash their clothes.
Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the doors
are opened to approximately 55 people of all ages who are seeking a place to gather and not only be fed
physically, but to also be encouraged in spirit.
During these morning operating hours, the guests have the opportunity to relax in the lounging area and
watch TV or rest. For those who are interested in maintaining a healthier lifestyle, work out equipment
and free weights are available for use.
As we continue to build hope and expand our services through the Pitt County area, the Mission Station
will remain at the core of our vision, as we extend our hearts and hands to serve those in desperate need.
The Need
A place for those without a home to go and be fed physically and spiritually.
What We Do
The Salvation Army provides a shelter for those without a home where they can go and feel welcomed.
We feed the physical body to help keep their strength up and provide them with a social setting where
they interact with others in a non threatening setting.
How You Can Help
Your donation to the Capital Campaign will provide more opportunities for the homeless in Pitt County to
be served. Through your partnership, one of the most effective ministries of The Salvation Army will be
able to expand, enabling those in desperate circumstances to find hope for their future and the next step
for a brighter tomorrow.
We Provide
Meeting the Needs of the Community
Every day, the lobby is filled with people who have come to seek assistance in their time of need. For
many, this means that their refrigerator is completely empty, and their food supply is depleted. For
others, it means that their utility bill is past due, and they are in jeopardy of losing their electric service.
There are some who arrive with only the clothes on their back due to disastrous situations, while others
are confronted with the traumatic possibility of eviction.
Still, there are a few who wait patiently to seek assistance for prescriptions needed to prevent and/or
treat life threatening illnesses.
Regardless of the circumstance, it is here at The Salvation Army that these individuals come to inquire if
they too can receive help in their darkest hour.
The Salvation Army exists to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. Through the
provision of food, utilities, clothing, shelter and medication, this mission is exemplified daily in service to
the community.
As the needs of Pitt County residents continue to increase, The Salvation Army must position itself
so that we can effectively accommodate those in need. Through this necessary transition to a new
space, even more families will have the opportunity to discover hope and support through the services
provided.
The Need
Victims of economic hardship, unexpected circumstances and disastrous situations are in need of relief
and support to assist them with basic needs such as food, utilities, clothing, shelter and prescribed medications for life-threatening illness.
What We Do
Upon consultation with The Salvation
Army’s social worker, individuals in need
may find immediate relief through the
distribution of food boxes, financial
assistance with utility bills, clothing
vouchers, temporary shelter provision
and prescription assistance.
How You Can Help
Your contribution to the Capital Campaign
directly impacts the lives of those in
desperate need. When you give to
The Salvation Army, you are actually
providing the basic needs for individuals
experiencing extreme hardship.
We Give
Bringing Hope and Joy in the New Year
Christmas is a busy, joyful, and sprit-filled time of year…………. unless
you have little money or food, and where you will sleep is always a
question.
Gifts for children and other loved ones take second chair to larger concerns and needs. Each year, The
Salvation Army provides gifts for children in low-income families, as well as for senior citizens. We touch
more than 26,000 lives at Christmas, channeling resources to where they will Do the Most Good.
The Need
Approximately 23,000 children in Pitt County live below the poverty line. Many parents and caregivers
struggle to make ends meet, and presents under a tree are a far-off hope. The Salvation Army, the community, and its many partners turn a child’s hope into Christmas delight.
What We Do
The Salvation Army provides needy families with the opportunity to apply for assistance to receive
age appropriate Christmas gifts for their children. Upon approval, these children are designated as a
recipient of the angel tree. As The Salvation Army sets up Angel trees in local churches and businesses
throughout Pitt County, the community is extended the opportunity to adopt a child in need and provide Christmas gifts that these families simply could not afford. Contributions made through the Red
Kettles support Christmas activities and raise funds to support year round programs.
How you can Help
When you choose to invest in the Capital Campaign, you choose to impact hundreds of families
throughout Pitt County. Through your donation, hundreds of poverty-stricken children are able to
experience an exciting Christmas morning! In addition, senior citizens in need are provided with a food
box to celebrate the Christmas holiday!
We Rebuild
Rebuilding after Disasters
The Disaster relief teams bring together Salvation Army officers,
staff and volunteers who provide food, shelter, clothing, and spiritual
comfort to first responders and victims of disasters in Pitt county
and throughout the nation. For those who have been directly impacted
by catastrophic events, such as floods, fires, tornadoes and hurricanes, the
presence of The Salvation Army relief team has proven to be a comfort to many. Since 1947, we have
offered aid to people in places where we can do the most good—and stay as long as we are needed.
The Need
Disasters come in many forms—both natural and manmade—and many are devastating to those
involved.
What We Do
From immediate response through long-term recovery, The Salvation Army remains on-site to lend a
hand, as well as hope, when it is most needed.
How You Can Help
Your contribution to the Capital Campaign
will equip The Salvation Army Disaster Relief
Team with the necessary resources to respond
immediately upon the call for service.
Serving as the hub of Disaster Relief Services
for Eastern North Carolina, your donation
provides disaster victims with the necessary
resources and support during their time of
need.

Testimonials: The Army in Action
“The Salvation Army has completely changed my life. Almost a year and a half of living in the woods,
I feel like I have been given a brand new life. It’s real here. The people are genuine, and they care. This
is a very rare thing, and it doesn’t just exist in most places. When I came out of living in the woods, I
was given a new opportunity at life - to really live. Through the Captains, the Mission Station, Mr. Jim
and the people of The Salvation Army, I have been given a new beginning.” ~ Eddie Stringfellow
“I am so thankful for the opportunities that The Salvation Army has given to my granddaughter
through the youth programs. Before she got involved, she was very self centered and really had a hard
time dealing with life in general. The youth program has not only helped her adjust to difficult situations in life, but has helped her to become a more independent young lady. She is learning responsibility, respect for others, how to help those around her, and she is building character in her own life. These
kids are given an opportunity to experience activities and find support that otherwise, they wouldn’t
have. God is the best thing that could happen to her, and I am just so thankful that Mylene has been
able to be a part of The Salvation Army in Greenville.” ~ Mary Johnson
“If it hadn’t been for The Salvation Army, I don’t know where I would be in life. As a mother of a
handicapped child, with a very limited income, there have been times where I have desperately needed
help with food to feed my family and assistance with my utilities bill. Not only has The Salvation Army
helped me in these times, but they have also provided Christmas gifts for my children when I did not
have the ability to provide for them myself. God has truly blessed The Salvation Army of Greenville, and
through this, so many people like me have been blessed in return.” ~ Martha Dail
“When I first started coming to The Salvation Army, I was battling severe depression and was seek-
ing a place to find help and healing. The people here completely opened their arms and their hearts to
me, ministering to me and to my family. I knew the Lord, but not in a way that I knew how to actually
live for Him. But through The Salvation Army, I was brought out of my shell and learned how to truly
surrender my life to God. They helped me understand how much God really does love me. I was at
a point where I didn’t even want to live anymore, and The Salvation Army gave me hope. They gave
me hope in God and gave me hope for a new life. I have experienced them open their arms and just
welcome people—helping the community—and just meeting you exactly where you are. The Salvation
Army is truly impacting lives. It has certainly changed mine.” ~ Carolyn Dawson
Building Campaign
Amid this challenging economic season faced by our nation, this community is seeing a significant rise
in the number of homeless, hungry and hopeless individuals. In 2013 alone, The Salvation Army met the
needs of thousands in Pitt County. Our current programs and services continue to change lives each day,
providing food, counseling, mentoring… and hope. But despite our efforts, the level of need keeps rising.
Our food pantry empties as soon as it is filled, our breakfast line extends longer each morning, and the
pleas for emergency assistance are growing louder and more urgent.
Although The Salvation Army continues to serve with relentless passion, there is so much more we must
do. The Salvation Army is turning to you, our community, with a request. Help us continue to be a beacon
of hope. The Harbor of Hope campaign, aimed at raising $3,400,000 will accomplish more than the construction of a larger building. It will allow us to better meet the mounting needs in Pitt County.
Yes, it’s a building campaign… but we’re building on a foundation of hope.
