COURSE DESCRIPTION "...Pitched past pitch of grief..." Gerard Manley Hopkins' poetry startles and thrills. It reveals - via the musics and rigors of its form and its content. Hopkins developed his famous "sprung rhythm," seeking the expressiveness and pulse of the human voice, the exactitude of mind and emotion in treating of God, the manifest world, the rivings of the human condition, his being, and the fraught relations of all those. A convert to Catholicism, later a Jesuit priest serving in Ireland, Hopkins knew and sang compellingly our human splendors: "Glory be to God for dappled things" - and anguish: "No worst, there is none."
