Sentence variety 1
Using a range of different sentence types can help you to convey your ideas clearly and engage your
reader.
Guided
1 Look at the sentences below and identify the sentence type. Are they:
A a single-clause sentence
B a multi-clause sentence with a subordinate clause
C a multi-clause sentence with a coordinate clause
D a multi-clause sentence with a relative clause
E a minor sentence?
For each one, identify the sentence type by writing a letter in the space. Then write a sentence to
explain how you know. One has been done for you.

Now consider this extract from one student’s answer to Question 9, then answer Question 2.
Professional footballers are possibly the worst ‘fakers’. With just one tap from
another player they fall over. Sometimes they dive to the ground. Occasionally they
fly. They always start screaming. It shows they are seriously injured. They say it
was a foul. They demand a free kick. It is ridiculous.
2 The extract from the student’s answer uses mainly short, single-clause sentences. Rewrite the
