Annual Report
January - December 2015
Growing Better Together
By any measure NEST is becoming one of the most active villages nationwide. NEST
connects neighbors across generations to create a community where we all want
to grow older. In 2015 we deepened engagement within our community and made
more connections than ever before.
161 Members • 182 Volunteers • 13 Business Sponsors
68 Trusted Professionals • 15 Neighborhoods
237 Donors • 3,868 Volunteer Hours
“The best thing NEST has done for me is given me a new purpose and meaning in my life - a
new family.” - Rosemary
• Growing: We started 2015 with 117
members and ended the year with
161 members. While membership
grew by 38%, NEST’s services and
support grew at almost twice that
rate.
• Better: We are proud that 9 of
every 10 members renew their
memberships. Members tell us that
since joining NEST they feel more
connected, engaged and able to
continue living confidently in the
homes and neighborhoods they love.

Member Requests
• Together: Because you wanted NEST to be accessible to lower-income neighbors, the
NEST Benefits Scholarship Program grew from 1 member in 2014 to 7 members in 2015.
The NEST Benefits Scholarship Program is funded by 10% of all membership dues.
NEST works with EASE
“We have started saying ‘NEST works with E.A.S.E.: Empowerment,
Affinity, Support and Enrichment.’ In 2016, we are strengthening each of these
core values. You will see more members in leadership roles, more opportunities to
connect with your neighbors, more ways to give and receive a hand with the big
and small tasks of life, and more rich programming through art, conversations
and new ideas. Thank you for all the ways you make this possible.” - Judy
Empowerment
Within NEST, each person has something to give and everyone benefits. Members share
their wealth of knowledge and life experience. Volunteers find new ways to put their talents
to work. NEST makes it easy for people to connect in the ways that they enjoy.
In 2015...
• Growing: Members and volunteers founded 4 new groups that met weekly or monthly.
Our new groups, the peer support Soup Group, Walking Group, Ladies Lunch, and
MetaMusical, engaged one-third of NEST members.
• Better: NEST members made up half of all committee volunteers, serving on the Board
of Directors, raising money, planning events, and supporting members. One-third of all
volunteer hours were contributed by members.
• Together: NEST members are the experts: 60% of special guest speakers, class teachers,
and workshop leaders were NEST members, volunteers, or vendors.
Affinity
“A few years ago none of us knew each other. Now look at us! We have a bunch of new
friends!” - Joeve
Affinity, that magnetic pull you experience when you feel like you belong, is at the heart of
everything we do. In 2015 NEST groups and activities allowed neighbors across generations
to deepen their relationships with one another.
Men’s and Women’s Groups celebrate the end of 2015
In 2015…
• Growing: NEST member groups met a total of 183 times, a 40% increase from 2014.
• Better: Peer support groups like Soup Group make it easier for members and volunteers
to get to know each other and feel comfortable asking for support.
• Together: Members say NEST helps them most with socializing and staying connected.
Support
“Every single NEST volunteer I have met has been so friendly, patient and helpful. From
the folks who cut up our apple tree and hauled it away, to the volunteer who built us a
portable ramp, to the volunteer who fixed our computer!” - Rebekah
With one phone call or email to NEST, members
access friendly volunteers to assist with practical
tasks: transportation, household upkeep,
technology help and more. Our volunteers say that
spending time with NEST members makes them
feel more connected to their neighborhoods.
For tasks beyond volunteers’ ability or availability,
NEST provides referrals to pre-screened
professionals who help with anything from
financial management to caregiving.

In 2015...
• Growing: Total volunteer opportunities increased by 64% from 2014. Transportation
made up half of all member requests. Volunteers took members on 44% more rides this
year than in 2014 for a total of 800 trips in and around Seattle.
• Better: Members can count on NEST. Volunteers ensured 98% of all requests were filled.
• Together: Volunteers contributed 3,868 service hours, about 10 hours for each day of
2015. Friendly visits between members and volunteers were the fastest-growing service
this year, with a total of 252 visits, about twice as many as in 2014.
Enrichment
“My life is richer and I am more engaged in my community as a result of working with
NEST.” - Bob
Members and volunteers further their learning,
find new meaning in their lives, contribute
to their community, and meet new friends.
For every member or volunteer who enjoys
attending a NESTcafé or potluck, there is
another who takes the lead to plan the next
event. As in all areas of NEST, opportunities and
choices exist for everyone.

In 2015…
• Growing: NEST hosted 66 different events, almost twice as many as in 2014, including
9 NESTcafés, 9 potlucks, 16 workshops, 9 member happy hours, several multi-session
classes, and 8 special events.
• Better: NEST hosted a total of 2,350 event attendees, about 75% more than in 2014.
• Together: Partnerships with Platinum Sponsors Era Living and Eagle Strategies enabled
us to provide meaningful member programming, featuring guest speakers like local
gardening guru Ciscoe Morris, UW Communications Chair David Domke, and Alene Moris,
founder of the UW Women’s Center.

Continuing our efforts to ensure NEST’s long-term
sustainability, we are proud to add an additional $27,501 to
our savings account so we can begin 2016 with four months
of reserve funding in the bank.
What’s Ahead in 2016:
• Increase member leadership and volunteer support.
• Explore new NEST office space.
• Consider northward expansion to Seattle city boundaries
at NE 145th Street.
• Build our savings to have six months of reserve funding in
the bank.
• Refine NEST’s message to be remarkable and inspiring.
