Humans only eat the sweet tasting nuts. Almond Nut Fact #2 Almond trees first grew in the Middle East, Iran still grows lots of almonds today. In ancient times, the trees were spread by humans to Northern Africa and Southern Europe. Almond Nut Fact #1 Almonds have been eaten by humans for thousands of years. Farmers started to grow Almonds in 3000 B.C., and they even found an almond in the tomb of Tutankhamun, in Egypt. Almond Nut Fact #4 Almonds can be used to make breakfast cereals or puddings, like muesli and ice cream. In Iran, they dip almonds into sea-salt and eat them as snacks at food markets. Almond Nut Fact #3 Almonds are a very good source of carbohydrates, which help to give you energy. They also contain lots of vitamin E, which helps to keep our bodies healthy. Almond Nut Fact #5 Almond Nut Fact #6 The trees can grow up to 10 metres tall and the trunks can be 30 centimetres across. That’s the same width as a ruler. The branches start off green, then turn purple in the sun and then grey. Almond Nut Fact #7 Almond nut trees grow best when there are warm, wet winters and hot, dry summers. Growing two trees next to each other helps them to produce more nuts. Brazil nut oil is also used as a lubricant in clocks and for making artists’ paints. Brazil Nut Fact #2 Brazil nut trees grow across South America, in countries such as Peru, Colombia, Bolivia and of course... Brazil! Brazil Nut Fact #1 Brazil nuts are a good food with lots of vitamins and minerals, but the nuts rot very quickly once the shell is removed. This makes it difficult to transport them. Brazil Nut Fact #4 The nuts are large and three sided, they have a creamy buttery flavour. Brazil Nut Fact #3 Brazil nut trees can only grow when there are long-tongued orchid bees living in the same forest, they are the only type of bee that can pollinate the trees. Brazil Nut Fact #7 The trees need lots of space to spread out in tropical forests, usually along the banks of rivers. They can live for 500 years, and some trees have lived for 1000 years! The hazelnuts can be harvested by hand or by machines, once they have fallen from the tree. The trees are also grown in Turkey and the United States. Hazelnut Fact #2 There is evidence that nuts were being grown by farms 9,000 years ago in Scotland. They found a pit with hundreds of thousands of burned hazelnut shells. Hazelnut Fact #1 Hazelnuts are used to make some chocolates, pralines and truffles. They are the main nut that is used in the popular chocolate spread called Nutella. Hazelnut Fact #4 Hazelnuts can be eaten raw, roasted or ground into a paste. They have a thin dark brown skin which is slightly bitter and is sometimes removed before cooking. Hazelnut Fact #3 Hazelnuts are particularly good for your health, because of their mixture of fats, protein, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals. 2000 years ago, the Greeks believed they could cure coughs if mixed with honey. Hazelnut Fact #5 Experts can help the trees to grow more nuts by a method called brutting. You have to snap, but not break, the tips of any new branches, 6 leaves away from the trunk of the tree. Hazelnut Fact #7 Hazelnut trees can produce nuts for over 80 years, and they are unusual because they produce their flowers in the middle of winter. The nuts grow during the summer Hazelnut Fact #6 Aboriginal people used to gather together in the East of Australia to feed on the nuts from two ancient trees, which they called ‘Kindal Kindal’. Macadamia Nut Fact #2 Macadamia nut trees grow mostly in Eastern Australia (the orange part of the map). Some of the trees also grow in the islands around Australia, including Indonesia. Macadamia Nut Fact #1 The shells of macadamia nuts are so hard that only one animal is strong enough to open them. Macaws, which are a type of parrot, have a very strong beak which can break the shell. Macadamia Nut Fact #4 You should wait for the seeds to fall to the ground before collecting them to eat. If you pull them straight from the tree they won’t be ripe enough. Macadamia Nut Fact #3 Macadamia nuts are very high in fat and low in protein. Humans can eat them but they are poisonous to dogs! Macadamia Nut Fact #5 Macadamia Nut Fact #6 The trees can grow to about 12 metres tall, the same height as a house. The flowers are white, pink and purple and they start making nuts when they are 10 years old. Macadamia Nut Fact #7 The trees can only grow where the temperatures are always warm, there is lots of rainfall each year and the soil is very rich with nutrients. They can easily be blown over by storms. The nut is eaten by humans and has a rich, buttery taste, which is good for making puddings. The wood from the tree can be used as a flavouring in smoked meat. Pecan Nut Fact #2 Pecan trees grow naturally in the south of the United States of America. They grow in the states of Texas, Kentucky and Florida, as well as lots of other states in between. Pecan Nut Fact #1 Pecan nuts were eaten and traded by Native Americans around 1000 years ago. Spanish explorers discovered pecan nuts and took them home with them to Europe about 400 years ago. Pecan Nut Fact #4 In America, there are now over 10 million pecan nut trees. Farmers harvest and collect the nuts from the trees in the middle of October. Pecan Nut Fact #3 In Texas, every November, they hold a huge festival called the Texas Pecan Festival. They celebrate all the nuts that have been collected and make lots of food with them. Pecan Nut Fact #5 Pecan nut trees grow well near rivers and need well drained soil. They grow well when the winters are quite cold and frosty. Some trees can live for 300 years. Pecan Nut Fact #7 The trees can grow up to 40 metres tall, that’s the same as a whole class of children standing on each other’s shoulders. They are deciduous trees, so they lose all of their leaves in winter. Pecan Nut Fact #6 There are two types of Walnut, the black walnut has lots of flavour but is very difficult to crack. Most of the nuts that humans eat are a type of English walnut. Walnut Fact #2 Walnut trees first started growing in Southern Europe. The Romans used to grow them and eat the nuts. They also discovered that the wood was good for making furniture. Walnut Fact #1 The best way to store walnuts for a long time is to keep them at a temperature just below freezing, but it takes a lot of energy and effort to keep the nuts this cold. Walnut Fact #4 In China, it is a tradition to rotate a pair of walnuts in your hand. This helps to improve blood flow and also shows how important you are. Walnut Fact #3 Walnuts are an excellent source of food that contain important vitamins. Some studies have shown that people who eat walnuts are better at dealing with stressful situations. Walnut Fact #5 Walnut trees grow all around the world and they can survive in almost any conditions, but the trees that grow in Europe make the most nuts because those are the perfect conditions. Walnut Fact #7 Walnuts are very clever trees. They spread chemicals into the soil which stops other plants from growing, so there is no competition for sunlight. Walnut Fact #6
