Some almonds taste sweet and
some taste bitter, it depends on
the type of almond tree. Humans
only eat the sweet tasting nuts.

East, Iran still grows lots of almonds
today. In ancient times, the trees were
spread by humans to Northern Africa
and Southern Europe.

almonds into sea-salt and eat them as

source of carbohydrates, which
help to give you energy. They

which helps to keep our bodies
healthy.
Almond Nut Fact #5

The trees can grow up
to 10 metres tall and
the trunks can be 30
centimetres across.
That’s the same width
as a ruler. The
branches start off
green, then turn
purple in the sun and
then grey.
Almond Nut Fact #7
Almond nut trees grow
best when there are
warm, wet winters and
hot, dry summers.
Growing two trees next
to each other helps them
to produce more nuts.
Brazil nut oil is also used as a
lubricant in clocks and for
making artists’ paints.
Brazil Nut Fact #2
Brazil nut trees grow across South
America, in countries such as
Peru, Colombia, Bolivia and of

but the nuts rot very quickly
once the shell is removed. This
makes it difficult to transport
them.
Brazil Nut Fact #4
The nuts are large and
three sided, they have a
creamy buttery flavour.
Brazil Nut Fact #3
Brazil nut trees can only grow
when there are long-tongued
orchid bees living in the same
forest, they are the only type
of bee that can pollinate the
trees.
Brazil Nut Fact #5
Brazil Nut Fact #6
The Brazil nut tree
can be 50 metres
tall, the same height
as 11 double-decker
buses on top of each
other.
Brazil Nut Fact #7
The trees need lots of
space to spread out in
tropical forests, usually
along the banks of rivers.
They can live for 500
years, and some trees
have lived for 1000
years!
The hazelnuts can be harvested by
hand or by machines, once they
have fallen from the tree. The trees
are also grown in Turkey and the
United States.
Hazelnut Fact #2
There is evidence that nuts were
being grown by farms 9,000
years ago in Scotland. They
found a pit with hundreds of
thousands of burned hazelnut
shells.
Hazelnut Fact #1
Hazelnuts are used to make some
chocolates, pralines and truffles. They
are the main nut that is used in the
popular chocolate spread called Nutella.
Hazelnut Fact #4
Hazelnuts can be eaten raw,
roasted or ground into a paste.
They have a thin dark brown skin
which is slightly bitter and is
sometimes removed before
cooking.
Hazelnut Fact #3
Hazelnuts are particularly good for your
health, because of their mixture of fats,
protein, carbohydrate, vitamins and
minerals. 2000 years ago, the Greeks
believed they could cure coughs if mixed
with honey.
Hazelnut Fact #5
Experts can help the trees to grow
more nuts by a method called
brutting. You have to snap, but not
break, the tips of any new branches,
6 leaves away from the trunk of the
tree.
Hazelnut Fact #7
Hazelnut trees can produce nuts for
over 80 years, and they are unusual
because they produce their flowers
in the middle of winter. The nuts
grow during the summer

together in the East of Australia to feed
on the nuts from two ancient trees,

Macadamia nut trees grow mostly
in Eastern Australia (the orange

also grow in the islands around
Australia, including Indonesia.
Macadamia Nut Fact #1
The shells of macadamia nuts are so hard
that only one animal is strong enough to
open them. Macaws, which are a type of
parrot, have a very strong beak which can
break the shell.
Macadamia Nut Fact #4
You should wait for the seeds to fall to
the ground before collecting them to
eat. If you pull them straight from the
tree they won’t be ripe enough.
Macadamia Nut Fact #3
Macadamia nuts are very high in fat and
low in protein. Humans can eat them but
they are poisonous to dogs!
Macadamia Nut Fact #5

house. The flowers are
white, pink and purple
and they start making
nuts when they are 10
years old.
Macadamia Nut Fact
#7
The trees can only
grow where the
temperatures are
always warm, there
is lots of rainfall each
year and the soil is
very rich with
nutrients. They can
easily be blown over
by storms.
The nut is eaten by humans and has a rich,
buttery taste, which is good for making
puddings. The wood from the tree can be
used as a flavouring in smoked meat.

and need well drained soil. They grow
well when the winters are quite cold
and frosty. Some trees can live for 300
years.
Pecan Nut Fact #7
The trees can grow up to 40 metres
tall, that’s the same as a whole class
of children standing on each other’s
shoulders. They are deciduous trees,
so they lose all of their leaves in
winter.

spread chemicals into the soil which
stops other plants from growing, so
there is no competition for sunlight.
