and Great Basin Indians; trails made by wagons
on the way to Oregon, California, and Utah; the
hoof prints of Pony Express riders and the wheels
of the Overland stagecoaches; the iron rails of the
Union Pacific, the country’s first rail line linking
East and West; and tire tracks on the Lincoln
Highway, the nation’s first coast-to- coast
automobile route.
Along the way, you’ll see traces of all these
historic trails and tracks. You’ll see the cities and
towns that sprang up beside them. At our historic
sites and museums, you’ll meet coal miners and
oil workers, sheepherders and cowboys, soldiers
and homesteaders. And you’ll discover that some
of the great characters of the West - like mountain
man Jim Bridger and outlaw Butch Cassidy - left
their own tracks on the land.
