IN ACCORDANCE WITH API 7K

Description:
This bulletin is to inform the industry of the ratings of the Varco BJ HT type Manual Tongs manufactured in accordance

with API Specification 7K 3 edition.
The Varco BJ HT manual tongs have been design verification tested as complete assemblies at the various size ranges
for each HT tong type to establish the ratings as outlined in this bulletin, based on the safety factors published in API
rd
Specification 7K 3 edition. In addition the complete HT manual tong assemblies re production proof load tested to 1.5
times their listed ratings on the critical pipe diameters for each individual lug jaw size.
Example:
The HT 35 complete assembly is torque tested to 33,500 ft lbs x 1.5 with the 5 ¼ to 7” lug jaw and to 15,000 ft lbs x
1.5 with the 2 7/8 to 4 ¼” lug jaw is installed.
The results of these torque tests have verified the majority of existing ratings. However some lug jaws will be de-rated
according to attached rating list.
The HT 135 test resulted in a de-rating to 110,000 ft lbs up to 9 ½”. Based on test results a decision has been taken to
discontinue manufacture and obsolete the HT 135 manual tong, per bulletin date. Varco BJ will continue to offer non cast
spare part support for a period of 5 years.
As additional information, you will find charts outlining the required rating to break out specific Drill pipes and Drill collars.
These charts show the new modified ratings will still allow all connections to be made up and broken out with full safety
factors for all HT manual tongs.
Example:
HT 55 lug jaw 200083-1 old rating 55,000 ft lbs has been de-rated to 35,000 ft. albs. This lug jaw has a size range
from 3 ½” to 5”. According to the drill pipe sheet the maximum BO for 2 7/8”, with 4 3/8” TJ, is 10,030 ft albs and
for Drill collars NC38 is 16284 ft labs. Thus the new rating will still allow all 3 ½” to 5” OD drill collars and tool
joint connections to be made up and broken out with full safety factors when using the HT 55 with lug jaw
200083-1.
