100 YEARS
This exhibit helps mark the company’s 100th
anniversary, and reignites memories of major
Canadian gardening milestones.
1913 – Howard and Lorrie Dunington-Grubb, who arrived from England just two years earlier, purchase 100 acres
of land near the village of Sheridan
(now known as Oakville). Sheridan Nurseries is born.
100 ANS
1914 – Herman Stensson, a Scandinavian horticulturist, is hired to run Sheridan Nurseries.
1919 – Sheridan wins its first accolade, the CNE Award for best rock garden. Sheridan has gone onto win over 200
awards since.
1923
– The
Mississauga Garden Centre is established and remains Sheridan’s oldest retail location.

YEARS
1930 – The introduction of the tractor in Canada modernizes and expands Sheridan Nurseries. Sheridan Nurseries
has now tripled in size, acquiring over 300 acres across the Oakville, Clarkson and Sheridan area.
1939 – Sheridan’s all time best100
seller,ANS
the Boxwood, makes its first appearance in the company’s catalogue. Today,
over 250,000 Boxwoods are produced each year.
1955 – For the first time, Sheridan Nurseries records more than $1 million in sales.
1967 – Sheridan becomes the first nursery in Canada to use computers.
1978 – Current President of Sheridan Nurseries, Karl Stensson, joins Sheridan Nurseries as Wholesale Sales
Manager.

YEARS Nurseries’ longest serving member of staff, Manuel Sobrinho celebrates his 50th anniversary at the

2012 – Sheridan Nurseries wins International Grower of the Year and releases its first commemorative book,
Sheridan Nurseries: One Hundred Years of People, Plans, and Plants.

2013 – Sheridan Nurseries celebrates its 100th year in business, and wins two National Awards of Excellence:
Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Grower of the Year and Chrysler Garden Centre of the Year.

• Sheridan Nurseries currently offers more than 600 varieties of hardy perennial plants and ship more than 1.8
million plants annually to markets across North Eastern North America.
