Periodic Table Project Description
You are to construct a periodic table illustrating the
trends of the periodic table. You will use pictures to
represent the elements. Beads, musical groups, photographs, fish, types of
soccer balls, Legos, shoes and basically any other item you can think of would
work! Be creative!
Homework to prepare for Day 1
You will watch one of the periodic table trend videos (atomic radius,
electronegativity, or ionization energy). You will take notes over this trend. You will
be prepared to teach the trend to the two other people in your group.
Day 1
You will teach your trend to your two partners. You will take notes over the other
two trends presented to you by your partners. After you have all gone over the
information, you will take an edmodo quiz over periodic table trends.
Everyone in your group will pick a trend to create the project. You can’t pick the
same trend you took notes over and presented to your group. The trend you use for
the project must be one of the trends presented to you by a member in your group.
You will create a periodic table using the app, pic collage. You will collect pictures
from various sources to put together in your collage. Each picture must have a
numerical value and the values should change to follow the trend being illustrated.
Here are guidelines for the pic collage:
1. It must contain 4 periods and 7 families of a representative (short) periodic
table. You do not have to include any “Transition elements” or the noble
gases.
2. The items in vertical columns (groups) must be similar in some manner and
have some variation and gradual change as you move up or down the column.
In other words, it should exhibit periodicity. Label each group by family
name.
3. You may get pictures from the internet or use your own photos or actual
objects. The numbers used must be searchable or actual data collected by
you.
Day 2
You should finish your collages today in class. Once your collages are finished, you
should share your collage with the other people in your group. You will explain how
the trend is demonstrated to the other group members. Everyone in your group
should check to make sure the trend is correct and all information is correct. If
you have time, write an abstract for your collage. You must write an abstract that
explains the trend of the periodic table for the collage you did not work on. The
trend you write an abstract for should be the trend that you have not taken notes
over (for homework) and explained to the group or the trend you created the pic
collage for. The abstract needs to explain the trend in your collage. You must
explain what each column or family in your table represents, what the trend or
periodicity is as you move across a period or down the family. You need to explain
how your trends compare to the trends in the actual periodic table. Be prepared to
explain this trend to Mrs. Gilmore.
Day 3 Finish your abstract and take the oral quiz.
Grade Breakdown:
8 POINTS for taking and preparing notes (individual grade)
12 POINTS for edmodo quiz (individual grade)
15 points for all three collages and abstracts (group grade)
5 points for oral quiz (individual grade)
Total points 40 points
