Who, What, Where, & Why
Declared land west of the Appalachian
Mountains was for Native Americans. It
was against the law for colonists to settle
there. British said it would cost too much
to protect the colonists (forts & troops) &
they wanted to avoid conflict with the
Indians.
Colonists were angered:
#1 Because they could have the
Ohio River Valley
#2 Because the British were
trying to control them
Colonists were angry!
It required colonists to pay a tax on all
printed materials by purchasing a stamp to
prove the tax had been paid.

Britain wanted colonists to help pay for the
French & Indian War.

Parliament repealed Stamp Act, but
passed this law which stated their
authority to govern the colonies. It gave
Parliament more power over colonies.
Colonists believed

This was a small “indirect” tax on glass,
lead, paper, paint, and tea.
It was collected at the port, not in the
stores.
