It was against the law for colonists to settle there. British said it would cost too much to protect the colonists (forts & troops) & they wanted to avoid conflict with the Indians. Colonists were angered: #1 Because they could have the Ohio River Valley #2 Because the British were trying to control them Colonists were angry! It required colonists to pay a tax on all printed materials by purchasing a stamp to prove the tax had been paid. Colonists were angry! Britain wanted colonists to help pay for the French & Indian War. Quartering Act Colonists had to house soldiers in their homes, feed them & provide transportation Britain was trying to save money May 24, 1765 Reaction This law lowered taxes on sugar, but called for strict enforcement of tax & punishment for smuggling. The British opened fire. 5 colonists died including one African, Crispus Attucks. The Colonists were enraged! They called for the removal of the soldiers. Tea Act gave the British East India Co. a monopoly on American tea. Colonists opposed the Tea Act!!! Sons of Liberty dumped British tea into the Boston Harbor. December 16, 1773 Intolerable Acts Coercive Acts March – June 1774 1st Continental Congress Sept.5 – Oct.26, 1774 British laws passed in response to Boston Tea Party. Wanted to force colonists to pay for lost tea. This law imposed military rule on Mass. and closed the Port of Boston. A meeting held in response to the Intolerable Acts. Colonies agreed to work together. Representatives drew up a Declaration of Rights, and called for a boycott. Britain Colonies Pb British East India Co. All colonies rallied to protest.
