Historical Talks on the occasion of the 375th Anniversary of St. Ignatius Church Chapel Point Sharing God’s Word and Sacraments since 1641 Celebrating 375 years of worship and service 1882 view of Chapel Point from the church hill September 24, 2016 - 1 PM Tolerance, Persecution and Property: The Roots and Nature of Maryland Catholic Freedom. Some people identify Maryland as a Catholic colony and a bastion of free exercise of religion. Others think primarily of the persecution of Catholics. Over the century and one half from the founding of Maryland until Treaty of Paris which recognized independence the extent of limits of freedom varied with local, intercolonial and international circumstances. We are privileged to have two outstanding experts on religion in colonial the era in Maryland. R. Emmett Curran emeritus professor at Georgetown University author of many books and articles on the Church especially in its Maryland and English roots including Papist Devils Catholics in British America 1574-1783. Beatriz Hardy author of Papists in a Protestant Age: The Catholic Gentry and Community in Maryland, 1689-1776. She is now the Dean of Libraries and Instructional Resources at Salisbury University, Maryland. Any study of religion in colonial Maryland requires the use of Jesuit sources in the Maryland Province Archives housed at Georgetown University. Beginning with Andrew White’s journal of the voyage to Maryland, Jesuits recorded history as they and their parishioners made it. Our guest presenters know those records and have done ground-breaking modern scholarship, helping us to understand the struggle to establish, define and preserve religious liberty.
