Dear Honors English 10 Students and Parents: To prepare students for Honors English 10, the English 10 team has selected the following summer reading books. The Odyssey by Homer (translated by W.H.D. Rouse copies are available for checkout through the English Resource Center during the last week of the 201516 school year) This has been called the best story ever written by many scholars. This is a classic epic hero tale of Odysseus and his quest to return home after the conclusion of the Trojan War. Throughout the journey the reader learns many traditional Greek beliefs and the role that the Gods play in the decision making process. This piece also examines the individual and how personal accomplishment collides with serving others. AND The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho This story, dazzling in its powerful simplicity and inspiring wisdom, is about an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried in the Pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an alchemist, all of whom point Santiago in the direction of his quest. No one knows what the treasure is, or if Santiago will be able to surmount the obstacles along the way. Books are available through the English Resource Center, the Hennepin County Library system, and at area bookstores.
