Late Medieval Period (WHI.10) Project
Pope Urban II’s Speech
For this assignment, you will be completing an analysis of different accounts of the same
speech by Pope Urban II at Claremont. You will construct an essay that explains the
significance of the speech (introduction) and compare and contrast the various accounts of the
same speech (body).
Writing Prompt:
What are the similarities and differences between the four given accounts of Pope Urban II’s
speech at Claremont?
Format:
Introductory Paragraph: introduce the reader to the reason and significance of the speech.
Make sure to end the paragraph with your thesis statement. Remember your thesis shouldn’t
state the exact similarities or differences, but that they exist.
Body Paragraphs (2): in one paragraph explain the similarities of the various accounts and in
the second paragraph explain the differences.
Conclusion: make sure you extend and connect the ideas that were written about in the
introduction and body paragraphs. Do not forget to include your thesis statement and make
sure to write about the same concepts, but do not use the same wording.
