INTRODUCTION EL CIVICS NUTRITION UNIT Beginning Level This guide will take you through the Nutrition 46.6 Objective: “Access resources for nutrition and information related to the purchase and preparation of healthy foods.” There are two tasks for this assessment at the Beginning Level, Task 1 and Task 2. Only Beginning level students complete Task 1. In Task 1, student looks at authentic or simplified ads from 2-3 different healthy food resources (food bank, farmers’ market, ethnic market, supermarket, community garden) which depict 6-8 produce items each. Student compares prices for at least 5 different fruits and/or vegetables. Student will: 1. Identify the 5 produce items and the store where student can find each produce item for the cheapest price. 2. Identify the 1 store student would shop to find the most economical produce overall. There are several teaching activities to achieve the objective. These are suggestions only and can be adapted to meet your students’ specific needs. Page 3: The first page of Task 1 contains a suggested list of activities and materials. Pages 4-7: Activities practicing comparing grocery prices on healthy foods. Page 8: Practice with a newspaper food ad and check prices. Page 9-10: Task 1: Assessment. Page 11: Nutrition Rubric: Task 1. The task is worth 6 points. MiraCosta College Noncredit ESL Program EL Civics Assessment (46.6) Nutrition (Beginning) 1 5/23/2016 In Task 2, given the USDA recommendations for a healthy diet and a short level-appropriate case study or picture prompt, student will list up to 6 unhealthy eating habits/food choices (BL=3, BH=4, IL=5, IH-A=6) of the family in the case study and make recommendations for changes the family can make. Page 12: The first page of Task 2 contains a suggested list of activities and materials. Page 13: USDA Food Guide. Students learn serving recommendations for each category on the food guide. Pages 14-21: Guide Practice. Students practice putting food in the correct categories. Pages 22-23: Assessment: Task 2. Students make healthier food recommendations. Page 24: Nutrition Rubric: Task 2– The task is worth 12 points, which will be added to the Task 1 Rubric for the final score. Page 25: Nutrition Objective: Final Score. Instructors note total points for your level. At the Beginning level, students need to score: BL BH 6 10 This number should be explained to students. The score a Beginning student receives on Task 1 will be added to Task 2 for the final score. If a Low Beginning student earned 3 points on Task 1, for example, the student only needs to earn 3 more points on Task 2 to pass the Nutrition objective. REMINDER - The activities in this packet are meant to be suggestions for your use on completing the objectives. These additional assessments are not meant to be “additional work for you and your students.” They are to be incorporated into your regular classroom activities.
