Officialsin central Afghanistansay two suicide bombers have killed 12 people and wounded more than 50 others
neara NATO base. The dead include civilians and Afghan police. A spokesman for theWardak governor says the
attacks took place Saturday morning in the Sayed Abadarea. Officials say a militant on foot carried out the first
bombing. Anexplosion from a bomber in a truck followed. The Taliban has claimedresponsibility for the attack.
Separately, NATO says two American servicemembers died Saturday in a militant attack in Ghazni province.
Pakistanipolice say gunmen have shot and killed seven Shi'ite Muslims in thesouthwestern province of Baluchistan
near the capital Quetta. A police official says gunmen onmotorcycles stopped a bus and shot and killed five of the
passengers onSaturday. They then killed two other Shi'ites in the same area. Baluchistan is home to Taliban
supporters and othermilitant groups including Baluch separatists. The separatists have beenfighting for political
independence and a greater share of the profits from thearea's natural resources.
Indonesia's anti-terrorism agency has killed two suspectedmilitants in an armed raid. Officials say a member of the
special Detachment 88police group was also killed during the operation which took place in Solo incentral Java.
Another militant was arrested. Officials say the young militantshad been linked to recent violence in the area.
Indonesialaunched a campaign against militants after the Balibombings in October, 2002.
AmericanSecretary of State Hillary Clinton has joined Pacific leaders in a call forfull equal treatment of men and
women in all parts of social, economic, andpolitical life. Mrs. Clinton and other leaders attending the 16-member
PacificIslands Forum signed a joint statement Saturday. They noted that progresstoward gender equality has been
slow in the area. They promised to work onissues including violence against women, limited economic
opportunities and therepresentation of women in Pacific legislatures. The meeting Saturday is beingheld in the
Cook Islands.
Thousandsof Philippine villagers who fled after an earthquake had returned to theirhomes Saturday after a tsunami
warning was lifted. TheAmerican Geological Survey says Friday's earthquake was centered to the east ofthe
Philippines about 96 kilometers from the town of Sulangan. It measured 7.6strong. Officials say the quake killed
one person. It also caused power outagesand damaged buildings.
