Modern Thursday A Structure Ballet Expansions Ballet B Advanced Tap Int/Adv Jazz Friday A B Class Descriptions BALLET Threshold Ballet (Either Wednesdays 5:30-6:30 OR Saturday s from 10:30-11:30). This once a week class is for 4-5 year old ballet dancers. This class will begin working at the barre, learning basic positions and ballet exercises. This class will also focus on spatial awareness, movements across the floor, and refining motor skills. Foundations (Mondays 5:30-6:30). This one time a week class is for 5-6 year old ballet dancers. This class will focus on study of proper placement of feet on floor. Class will work towards performing Plies, Tendus, Degages, Rond de Jambs, Frappes and Grand Battements at the barre, with traditional one hand on the barre. Center work will include Retires, Arabesques, Saute in Arabesque, Chasses, Changements, Pas de Chats, Chaines and Grand Jetes. Structure (Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:30-6:30) This twice a week class is for the 7-9 year old ballet dancer. This class will focus on study of proper alignment of spine, legs and shoulders. Class work will add Adage and stretching at the barre. Center work will add Adage, Port de Bras, Pirouettes, Piques, Petite Allegro, and introducing Developpe Jete and Tour Jete. Additions (Mondays and Wednesdays 6:30-8:00 AND Saturdays 12:30-2:00) This three time a week class is for 10-13 year old ballet dancers. This class will focus on preparation for pointe work, and beginning level pointe work. Class work will add to length of exercises, emphasizing Releves, introduction to pointe shoes, beginning pointe work, and eventually working entirely on pointe. Expansions (Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30-8:00, TO BE TAKEN WITH TWO Additions classes as well). This four time a week level is for the 14+ year old ballet dancer. This class will focus on Advanced level dance vocabulary and movements, work on movement quality and intent, kinesiology, pas de deux, and transitions after high school. Expansions students may take Additons level as well, so that they can study up to five times a week. Teen and Adult Ballet -(Mondays 7:30-8:30)This one time a week beginning ballet class is for adults and teens who are new to ballet or those who have danced before and want to begin again. MODERN DANCE Beginning Modern (Saturday 11:30-12:30) This modern class meets once a week and is for dancers ages 7-12. This class will focus on learning the essentials of modern movement with special attention to correct body placement and alignment, musicality, gravity, and fluidity. Through quirky floor work, center exercises, and combinations we will work to develop strength, stamina, coordination, and flexibility. This class will also develop an understanding of the fundamental movement principles: time, space, and energy. Intermediate and Advanced Modern (Wednesdays 6:30-7:30 or Saturdays 9:30-10:30)This one time a week class is for ages 13 and up. It will concentrate on encompassing Graham, Cunningham and release techniques through proper alignment, use of breath and contraction, quality of structural form, moving through space, directional changes as well as fall and recovery. JAZZ DANCE Beginning Jazz (Tuesdays 6:30-7:30) This one time a week class is for ages 7-12. It will introduce the student to isolations, basic turning skills, leaps across the floor, and short combinations. Intermediate/Advanced Jazz (Thursdays 6:30-7:30) This once weekly class is for the 10-13 year old dancer, or it can also be taken by an advanced jazz dancer who would like to take jazz twice a week. This class will focus on continuing to develop bodily awareness, proper alignment, and increasing students’ flexibility, strength, and balance. We will begin to work on isolations, change of direction, use of space, and the dynamics and qualities of each movement. Terminology and repetition will be emphasized throughout this level. Advanced Jazz (Tuesdays 5:30-6:30) This once a week class is for the advanced level dancer, ages 14 and up. This class will focus on strengthening the muscles utilized for jazz dance through complex and lengthy combinations. Technique must be strong in order to take this class. Memorization of material will be a main focus, with an emphasis on performance and movement quality, along with bodily and spatial awareness while working within a group setting. Dancers will also be given the opportunity to learn to express their own individual voices by improvisation and creation of movement in this class. TAP Beginning Tap (Saturdays 9:30-10:30) This class meets once a week class and is designed for the dancer ages 4-6 who is new to tap. This class will introduce students to the basics of rhythm, coordination, and the beginning tap vocabulary and movements, which will be utilized and expanded upon in the upper levels. We will drill terminology with plenty of repetition, and emphasize working to create clear and crisp tap sounds. Intermediate Tap (Saturdays 11:30-12:30) This once a week tap class is for the 7-12 year old dancer. This class will focus on developing the basic tap steps and implementing them within more complex combinations of steps. We will begin working with more challenging rhythms and tempo changes within the music and movement. This level will also focus on students’ overall confidence and performance. Advanced Tap (Thursdays 5:30-6:30) This once weekly class is for the advanced tap dancer, ages 13 and up. This class will focus on advancing the tap vocabulary and movement by adding speed, turns, toes, dynamics, and more complex rhythmic combinations. We will work on refining the clarity of the tap sounds and emphasize cleanliness in a group performance setting. This advanced tap class will also include important elements of both "Rhythm" and "Broadway" styles, in order to teach students to be versatile in their performance skills. LYRICAL DANCE Intro to Lyrical (Mondays 6:30-7:30) This weekly class for dancers ages 5-10 will introduce them to the base of lyrical movement. The class will incorporate elements of ballet, jazz, and modern technique. There will also be a strong emphasis on imagination, creative selfexpression, and the interpretation of music through movement. Lyrical (Wednesdays 5:30-6:30) This one time a week class is for ages 10 and up. It is a fusion of ballet, modern and jazz. The dancer will learn how to use creative expression to tell the story of the music through their movement. . KINESIOLOGY Kinesiology (Mondays 5:30-6:30) This class teaches knowledge of the science of movement that can help any dancer achieve the goals of excellent performance and avoidance of injury. For students and others in pursuit of that knowledge, Dance Kinesiology is a comprehensive introduction to the ways muscles and bones work in all types of dance. Dance Kinesiology explores virtually every aspect of dance movement, including the skeletal and muscular systems; muscular imbalances; efficiency, and relaxation; prevention of dance injuries; and conditioning. Emphasis is placed throughout on structural and neuromuscular analysis, the elements of kinesiology most pertinent to dance.
