CRCAP CLASS DESCRIPTIONS: Summer 2014 Organized by Department Animation | Art | Dance | Drama | Music | Musical Theater | Photo Sports | Swimming | Textiles | Video | Writing Classes are for all ages unless otherwise designated ANIMATION DEPARTMENT DEPT. HEAD: KLEMENTINA BUDNIK STOPMOTION GO: Ages 10-15 (Limit 12) Have you ever wanted to make your favorite stuffed animal come to life? Do you look at acorns and see a head with a funny hat? Does tinfoil remind you of the shine of the moon? If so, learn how to use these simple materials to create realistic characters sets and in StopMotion Go! We will practice a variety of production and construction techniques as we design and animate a film as a group. (period 1) ANIMATION ONE-A-DAY: (Limit 10) In Animation One-a-Day, budding artists will be exposed to a different form of animation every class. Ranging from hand drawn charcoal animations to stop motion to light animation and onwards, each session will expand their animating palette. (period 2) ANIMATION MACHINES: (Limit 8) Animators practice the art of making still images move before your eyes. It's about deception, invention and imagination. For years, these tricksters have created elaborate machines to make stories come alive. We'll start by learning how to build the traditional contraptions like thaumatropes, zoetropes, and pin screens. Then together we'll invent and build a new way of animating. Get ready to brainstorm, experiment and collaborate. Make the magic happen in Animation Machines! (period 3)Ages 11-15, Limit 10 ANIMATION STUDIO: (Limit 12) Learn what it takes to run an animation studio. Collaborate with your class to create a story, build the sets, design characters, animate, record sound, edit, and most importantly, pick an awesome name for your studio. By the end of the session you’ll have the skills to make your very own pro animation and an opportunity to submit to film festivals. Classes will consist of demos, screenings, and lots of hands-on practice. (period 5) ANIMATION: (Limit 10) Like to draw, paint, construct scenes, or tell stories? Have you ever wished your pictures would come to life? Then animation is the course for you. We’ll learn the basics like flipbooks, sand animation, cut-outs, and more. We’ll even invent some new techniques together. Join us and discover the magic of putting your art in motion. (period 6) LIVE ACTION ANIMATED MOVIE: Ages 11-15 (Limit 10) Worlds collide as Live Action Animation blends live action performances with animated characters and settings. In this brand new class we’ll explore special techniques like pixelation animation and rotoscoping to create imaginative new worlds and characters. If you’re into special effects and dreaming up fantastic situations then join Live Action Animation and let your imagination run wild! (period 6) ART DEPARTMENT DEPT. HEAD: MARY OLIVEIRA CLAY: (Limit 12) You will experiment with clay in a variety of ways; from practical, functional vessels to imaginative sculptures. We will explore slab construction, press, mold and hand building and generally have great fun squishing in the mud. (periods 1, 2, 3, 6) DICKS 1-A-DAY ART VITAMIN: (Limit 12) Painting, sculpture, collage, assemblage, printmaking, self-portrait, mask-making, wire, wood and all that is good—everything in one easy dose of Dick’s 1-a-day art vitamin! Take a different pill every day and feel the creative juices flow. (period 1) EXPERIMENTAL BAKING: (Limit 8) Enter the strange and wonderful world where art, science, and delicious all come together. In Experimental Baking campers will explore, and then devour, new possibilities, innovative techniques, and bizarre recipes. (periods 1,2,3) GRAPHIC ARTS GUILD: (Limit 8) This class focuses on the experience of a freelance graphic artist. Work individually and as part of a team creating graphics of all kinds! No project is too big or too small—we’ll explore illustration, design, signage and painting. When CRCAP needs a job done right, they call The Graphic Arts Guild! (period 1) MINI-GOLF: (Limit 10) Come together as a community of artists and mini golfers and create your very own mini golf course! Twists and turns, bends and drops, obstacles and obstructions! Together we will build it all as you design your individual mini golf hole. We will work the whole session envisioning, building, and eventually installing a mini golf course on the CRCAP campus that will be playable by all on Festival Day. (period 1) PAPER SCULPTURE: (Limit 12) This class will explore all the flexibility, strength and beauty of creating with paper. We will build models and pop ups, fold origami and make mechanical models all out of paper. If there is something you have been dreaming of making…let’s make it out of paper! (period 1) BIG CITY OF DREAMS: (Limit 8) In this collaborative art class we design, plan and build the city of our dreams. Our city will have both practical elements (such as a fire station, school, and Creative Arts program of course) and elements of pure imagination! Maybe we don’t need roads if we all travel by hovercraft, or maybe there is a rollercoaster in the center of town. Your dreams will shape our city. (period 2) MATERIALISM: (Limit 10) How do artists choose what materials to use? By experimenting with anything and everything that crosses their paths, of course! We will experiment with and explore a variety of unusual and everyday materials while making sculptures, paintings and mixed media artworks. Use the materials provided or bring some of your own! (period 2) PAINT ON: (Limit 10) Oh the many things that paint can do. This class will explore the possibilities of paint. Paint what you see, paint what you imagine, drip paint into the unknown. The possibilities are endless. Let’s take a journey. (period 2) COMIC GRAPHIC NOVEL: (Limit 10) Come explore the world of sequential storytelling. This class will focus on telling stories through the combination of words and drawings. Whether based on personal experience, a dream that lingered in your brain, or a world of your invention, it is your story to tell. Come ready to draw, write and make your very own graphic novel. (period 3) CRCAP GARDEN PROJECT : (Limit 12) This class will maintain and cultivate the new school garden spaces being planted right now, creating art projects to decorate the gardens, and using the vegetables and flowers to create inks, dyes and all sorts of creative objects. This is your chance to get outside, get creative, and get back to nature! (period 5) DRAW PAINT COLLAGE: (Limit 12) This class is ideal for the beginning student who would like to try a little bit of everything, as well as the more advanced student looking to expand his/her artistic vocabulary. Let drawing, painting and collage flow from your mind to your fingertips. (period 3) DESIGN & CONQUER: (Limit 12) Let your voice be heard! In Design and Conquer we will learn how to make logos, magazines, layouts, and designs using real graphic design software. In this class, we will use the power of art to move the masses, generate buzz, and get the camp excited about our message. We will also collaborate with other classes, helping them get the word out with our design campaigns. (period 3) GAME MAKERS: (Limit 10) Plan, design, and create your own functional board game! We will figure out the basic components of a “great board game” together, and then you will be free to decide how to make your dream game a reality. The process could include drawing, painting, constructing, figurine molding, stamping/printing, graphic designing, or whatever else you can imagine! (period 3) LAND OF THE GIANTS: Ages 10-15 (Limit 10) Ever wonder what it would be like to visit a world where giants live? A pencil would be taller than you, a candy bar would never fit in your stomach, and a cell phone would be the size of an arm chair! In this class, we’ll make sculptures of ordinary objects that are literally ten times their normal size. Cardboard, glue guns, utility knives and paper maché are just some of the materials we will be using to create these huge structures. (period 3) MAD PROPS: (Limit 12) We’ll be whipping up all the crazy props the theater and media classes need. Have a blast creating wedding cakes, movie cameras, campfires, giant erasers, and who knows what else. We’ll design and build all kinds of fake stuff, and then watch with glee as it parades across the stage and screen. No experience necessary: all ideas welcome. (period 3) PICTURE BOOK PRESS: (Limit 12) Do you like making up stories? Do you enjoy drawing using your imagination? If so, this is the class for you! Throughout the session campers will explore a variety of illustration techniques and ultimately write and illustrate their own original picture books. The final, "published" editions will be on display on Festival Day. (period 5) PRINTMAKING: (Limit 10) Come enjoy the endless fun of the printmaking world. Image after image, you can keep printing them out. From artist’s prints to greeting cards, you can experiment with a variety of methods. See your art multiply! This course is a combination of patience, technique and spontaneity. (period 5) SOAPSTONE: (Limit 12) This class is designed for beginning and advanced soapstone sculptors. Soapstone is a soft rock that can be formed and shaped with saws and files. Sandpaper and soft materials are used to smooth and polish the surface of the sculpture. Carving soapstone is a lengthy process; however, the result is a beautiful stone sculpture that could last forever! (periods 5, 6) SET CONSTRUCTION: Ages 11-15 (Limit 12) “Techies” make the magic of theater possible. Focus on scenic design and set construction for the big musical production. Analyze the world of the play, giving careful consideration to the design elements needed to bring that world to life. Work with power tools, wood, metal, paint and more in this very hands-on, carefully supervised environment. Actors taking this class develop a life-long appreciation for the many “behind the scenes” aspects involved in putting on a show. (periods 5, 6) MASKS: Ages 11-15, (Limit 10) Make the weirdest things possible to put on your face and wear as a mask. The possibilities of shadow, shape and character will be explored with paper, foam, fabric and leather. Who have you always wanted to be? What’s your favorite animal, or which one would you be if you could? What if they were all the same thing mashed into one?! Let’s make masks and get weird. (period 6) MAKE UP: (Limit 12) Maybe you're not a zombie. Maybe you're not a fairy princess. Maybe you're not a pirate, monster, or Shakespearean actor… yet. Once you understand how to use the basic materials, you can be all these characters and more. We will delve into the world of stage makeup and touch upon a variety of styles. (period 6) TINY UNIVERSES: (Limit 10) Take all of your weirdest ideas and turn them into a tiny reality. Learn how to construct miniature dioramas and other, incredibly tiny creations in Tiny Universes. We’ll use every imaginable material and technique to engineer a universe beyond possibility ! (period 6) WIRE JEWELRY: (Limit 12) Discover the wonders of wire jewelry making. Learn how to design impressive and unique bracelets, necklaces, and earrings by bending and twisting wire. Lose yourself in the bin of beads and get wired for this trip into the world of contemporary craft! (period 6) DANCE DEPARTMENT DEPT. HEAD: ANN ALLEN The first days of each session will be devoted to assuring correct class placement according to ability and experience. CONTEMPORARY DANCE: Ages 12-15 (Limit 12) If learning original choreography, developing your technique, exploring creative expression through your body and connecting viscerally with modern musical styles gets your blood flowing, this is your class. We focus on creating a riveting contemporary ensemble-based dance performance while deepening our technical abilities. Previous dance experience is suggested. (period 1) MAKING DANCES: (Limit 12) Do you like creating new and interesting movement? Here’s your chance to build your own dance works and combine them with music, costumes, and/or text. Bring your friends and learn the different ways to choose music, make costumes and perform your own dances. (period 1) TAP DANCE: (Limit 12) Tap your troubles away. Come make a lot of organized noise. Learn fascinating rhythms, show stopping steps, and be a part of the CRCAP Dance Concert. Join us for an introduction to one of America’s most beloved artistic innovations. (period 1) AFRO-BRAZILIAN DANCE: (Limit 16) Come and enjoy this mix of West African, Caribbean and Brazilian Dance. A yearly CRCAP favorite. No previous experience needed, just a desire to move your body with some Afro-Brazilian flair! (period 2) SHOWTIME: (Limit 16) Learn and perform choreography from popular musicals – The Lion King, Guys and Dolls, Wicked. Bring your favorite musical numbers to life. If you love to dance, then it’s Showtime! (period 2) BALLET: (Limit 12) This course offers a relaxed summertime approach to a beautiful art form. We will be working on techniques at the barre and combinations in center floor. Come try this new way to Ballet with both classical and contemporary music. (period 3) HIP HOP JUNIOR: Ages 8-11 (Limit 16) This class will give you an introduction to Hip Hop techniques. Join the fiercest dance crew at CRCAP and take the stage dancing to all your favorite Hip Hop hits! (period 3) DANSICAL: (Limit 16) This class is for campers who want to immerse themselves in musical theater dance for the whole afternoon! In this two-period class, we will learn and perform choreography to create a condensed version of a popular Broadway Show! No lines or lyrics to memorize, just storytelling through dance. Dance styles will include jazz, musical theater, and lyrical. If you love to perform, this is the class for you. Because of this class’ big performance focus, campers should sign up for BOTH periods. (periods 5 and 6) HIP HOP: Ages 12-15 (Limit 16) B-Boys and B-Girls hit the floor, 'cause we’re about to drop the beat! Learn Hip-Hop and street funk choreography. Pop, lock, and break to the latest fresh beats. (period 5) JAZZ DANCE: (Limit 12) A fun, athletic class emphasizing lyrical jazz styles to traditional and contemporary jazz music. The skills you learn in Jazz Dance will help you with musicals and other dance styles. Some dance experience recommended. (period 6) DRAMA DEPARTMENT DEPT. HEAD: SALLY CAMPBELL BLACK BOX THEATER: Ages 11-15 (Limit 12) Love to act and want to be in a One Act play? This class is for more advanced students with some previous acting experience who want to flex their acting chops and work with a text. There will be auditions and a rehearsal period where you will develop your character,and work as an ensemble to stage the play. Attention to script analysis, voice, movement, and advanced acting techniques will be part of the daily process. You will perform in our black box theater on Festival Day. (period 1) CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE: (Limit 12) Create an adventure story that will involve lots of quick decisions. At each crossroad, the audience chooses the next step for the characters. The ensemble acts out the results, even as the choices lead to stranger and stickier situations. If you love to think up wild plots and have a blast performing, this is the place to be. Our contagiously convoluted creation debuts on Festival Day. (period 1) PERFORMANCE ART: (Limit 16) Come join the wild side of theater, art, video interactivity and intellectual absurdity. Come be part of our gang of multi-media performance and experiences. For the adventurous who want to explore the outer reaches of imagination. Check your inhibitions at the door. (period 1) RADIO PLAY: (Limit 16) Has anyone ever said "you have a face for radio" to you? Got an ear for snappy dialogue? Think you have a future on NPR? Radio Play lets you create a riveting drama, a sizzling soap opera, a satirical quiz show, or all three at once - the sky's the limit. Want your story to be set in space, starring a Swedish hedgehog detective? We can find just the right sound effects to make it happen. Campers will write a new installment of our audio adventure every week, record themselves acting it out, mix in music and sound, and perform the grand finale episode live on stage Festival Day. (period 1) PARADE!: (Limit 12) Let’s start the Arts Festival off with a CRCAP-arade! We will design and build a float, craft funky giant puppet characters, create marching routines, and invite the whole camp to join in. This class is great for makers/builders, dreamers, and folks that like sparkle and glitz and strutting down the promenade. Grab your batons, dust off your top hats, the CRCAP-arade is pulling into camp. (period 2) DUELS, DAMSELS, DISASTERS: (Limit 12) Do you fancy yourself a dashing hero, conniving villain or mysterious rogue? Learn about melodrama, an exaggerated type of acting that involves sensational stories and over-the-top characters. Through improvisation and other acting exercises, we will explore the many uses of melodrama as we write, design and perform our own sensational story. (period 3) THE SCENE: Ages 11-15 (Limit 12) In The Scene, get ready to really dig into acting. We'll work on character, physicality, intention, and increasing the actor's freedom onstage. Scenes will range from Shakespeare to current, contemporary plays. (period 5) THEATER OF THE ABSURD: (Limit 16) This class is for those crazy, zany, far-out types who are willing to take a giant step into the world of absurdity. Scenes are created by the ensemble and performed for the questionable welfare of the entire summer program. The only prerequisite is an eagerness and willingness to be ABSURD. (period 5) ADVANCED IMPROV: Ages 11-15 (Limit 16) Take your improv skills to the next level this summer with Advanced Improv. Building off skills learned in your previous improv training, we focus on using familiar concepts in new ways. We cover points of inspiration, open scene work, advanced short form games and even long form improvisation techniques. We’ll spend the session laughing, playing and finding the “game” in everything we do. Of course, we’ll share our impromptu ensemble-based comedy with the whole community on Festival Day! (period 6) FAST ACTION ACTING WORKSHOP: Ages 8-11 (Limit 12) An introductory acting class for young actors and actresses, eager to bring their hidden talents to the stage. We will explore all different types of acting, including dramatic scene work, improv, sketch comedy, and performance art. This class will build the confidence and enthusiasm required to be a stage performer. It is also a great place to meet fellow actors and have fun! (period 6) MUSIC DEPARTMENT DEPT. HEAD: COOPER EVANS DRUMS: (Limit 3) Anyone who is interested in learning to play the drums, or has already taken drum lessons and would like to continue to learn and improve their skills, is welcome to join. Campers take turns during class, receiving a 15 or 20 minute private lesson each day. Learn at your own pace, at your own level. In between lessons, students are welcome to play other percussion instruments, either practicing their lesson or improvising rhythms of their own. (periods 1, 2) ONE HIT WONDER: (Limit 12) If you are a songwriter, composer, sound engineer, or musician then this is where you want to be 3rd period. In this class we will write our own original songs and record them! At the end of the session we will have created a CD that we can go home and listen to during the year. We will focus on the songwriting and sound production more than the live performance. We will try many different styles of recording and explore what techniques sound best on each type of song; room mics, MIDI instruments, multi-tracking, click tracks, and more. Great tunes, great sound, great CD, great class! (period 1) SINGER'S WORKSHOP: Ages 11-15 (Limit 16) Hey vocalists- want a chance to focus on singing and developing as a performer? We’ll explore different vocal techniques, stylings, and the ins-and-outs of solo and group singing. Bring in those songs you’ve always wanted to sing and discover new ones. We’ll sing jazz, pop, showtunes, folk – you name it. (period 1) GIRL BAND: (Limit 12) Joan Jett, Pink, Taylor Swift, Beyonce: These powerful women have helped shape the music scene. Join CRCAP’s Girl Band and help create a new revolution. All instruments and experience levels welcome. Go Girl Band! (period 2) GUITAR WORKSHOP: Ages 10-15 (Limit 10) Do you want to learn a Beatles’ tune on guitar? This class is for beginners and intermediates who want to learn techniques and lots of tunes. Just bring your guitar and your enthusiasm! Even Jimi Hendrix had to start somewhere. We have a limited number of instruments available for those without guitars. (period 2) JAZZ & BLUES ENSEMBLE: (Limit 12) Calling all musicians who want to help Jazz up camp! In this ensemble, we’ll learn a bunch of classic Jazz & Blues tunes and create our own arrangements as well. Exploring different kinds of Jazz music, we’ll also delve into the world of improvising and soloing as a feature of our performances. We’ll build up a cool repertoire over the course of the session and show it off on Festival Day! (period 2) ACOUSTIC COLLECTIVE: Ages 11-15 (Limit 10) Are you a singer/songwriter/performer looking to hone your skills and refine your musical craft? In this class we will work in together in pairs, solo acts, small groups or as a full class to create a beautiful, and precise, Acoustic Collective. We will perform originals and covers on all sorts of acoustic instruments: guitars, piano, voice, upright bass, violins, cellos, clarinets, flutes, drums or anything else that doesn’t need to be plugged in. WARNING: If you love singing harmonies you may never want to leave. If you are between the ages of 11-15 and have played an acoustic instrument for 2 years please sign up for Acoustic Collective so we can get you up on stage performing! (period 3) ROCK STAR PERFORMANCE: (Limit 16) We will create an entity, a force, an essence, an image. We will create a band! In four weeks we will transform from a bunch of campers and counselors who don’t know each other to the most well known band in the history of CRCAP. We will NOT just play a song at the noon-time show standing still in the center of the stage wearing our everyday clothes… no way. We will have extravagant costumes and performance choreography and we will preform all over campus! We will have band t-shirts handed out to our biggest fans! Posters for our big upcoming shows and a festival day performance like no other. We are not just musicians, we are performers! (period 3) BEGINNING PIANO: (Limit 3) This class is designed for campers who have never had music lessons and would like to learn how to read music. Tickle the ivories, make those fingers dance and get hired to play fancy cocktail parties. It all starts here with beginning piano. (period 3) MAKING INSTRUMENTS: Ages 8-11 (Limit 8) In this class we will use everyday items found around the house, as well as supplies provided from art and hardware stores (wood, string, cans, beans, paint, screws, nails, and lots of other random stuff) to make (surprise!) homemade musical instruments. We can make maracas, drums, thumb pianos, harps and guitars, as well as any other instruments that you can dream up. (period 5) MINI-ROCKERS: Ages 8-11 (Limit 12) The fabulous Mini Rockers are back by popular demand! Play in a band and learn some of your favorite songs. This is a perfect opportunity for beginners on any instrument and young campers who would like to experience being in an ensemble. Every rock star has to start somewhere; where better than CRCAP and Mini Rockers? (period 5) SOUL/FUNK BAND: Ages 11-15 (Limit 12) James Brown, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and….you? Learn to groove like the greats as we lead the CRCAP soul revival. We’ll try everything from classic R & B to experimenting around with tunes we write as a class. We’re going to need some funky guitar players, bassists, pianists and drummers, plus some dynamite vocalists and a great horn section, so all musicians and instruments are welcome. (period 5) A CAPPELLA: Ages 11-15 (Limit 20) If you love to sing modern, pop, rock, R & B and jazz music, you will love A Cappella. We will learn about this unique form of music with a history as old as humans have been around. We listen to a variety of amazing vocal groups, study intricate harmonies, work on blending as an ensemble and make beautiful music. This class performs in Noontime Shows and on Festival Day. Previous vocal experience (solo or in groups) is helpful but not required. (period 6) ALTERNA-BAND: Ages 11-15 (Limit 12) Do you enjoy music with an edge? If you play an instrument, dig composition and groove on improvisation, Alterna-Band is for you. We will explore the genres on the fringes of the music scene like punk, avant-garde, and experimental music through performance and recording projects. This class is on a mission to break the mold! (period 6) PERCUSSION BAND: (Limit 10) Come and join the Percussion Band. In this class we will be drumming as a group to make music from percussion instruments. Using drums from the drum set, hand drums, timbales, cowbells, woodblocks and more, we will create amazing rhythms and beats. This is a great class to end the day at CRCAP. No previous percussion experience required. (period 6) REMIX MACHINE: In this magical musical journey the class will form a band and explore musical genres. We will take popular songs and revive them with new tones and beats. Take pop songs and turn them into soft folk tunes. Turn love ballads into hip hop explosions. We even venture into the world of musical mash-ups. It’s up to you and the “remix” band! (period 6) MUSICAL THEATER DEPARTMENT DEPT HEAD: SALLY CAMPBELL MINI MUSICAL: Ages 8-10 (Limit 15) We will be creating our own original mini musical: our own story, songs and dances, completely from scratch. No previous experience is necessary, though a strong desire to be in a musical is definitely needed. After this class, you can tell all your friends you wrote and performed your very own musical. Our lyrical masterpiece will be performed at the Arts Festival. NOTE: 10 YEAR OLDS MAY ONLY SIGN UP FOR EITHER MINI MUSICAL OR MUSICAL THEATER TROUPE. (period 1) MUSICAL THEATER TROUPE: Ages 10-12 (Limit 24) A musical specially tailored for performers ages 10-12. This is a great opportunity to make a splash on stage before leaping into the Production (geared towards older actors). We will perform on Festival Day in Foster Hall. Come prepared to audition with a short poem or monologue and a song. During the last week of the session there may be rehearsals held after camp. NOTE: 10 YEAR OLDS MAY ONLY SIGN UP FOR EITHER MINI MUSICAL OR MUSICAL THEATER TROUPE. (period 2) PRODUCTION: Ages 12-15 (Limit 45) The big musical is performed the evening before and the evening of Festival Day on our enchanting outdoor Festival Stage. Our productions feature fabulous costumes, sets, a staff pit orchestra and professional lighting/sound. Campers must commit to TWO PERIODS (2nd and 3rd) of rehearsal time. The last week of each session will include evening rehearsals. Auditions take place on the first two days of each session. For the audition, prepare a short poem or reading and a song (no sheet music necessary!). (periods 2 and 3) CABARET: Ages 12-15 (Limit 8) Perform musical scenes in the style of a cabaret. You will play specific characters. You will sing solos and duets with harmony and counterpoint. You will perform songs from Broadway shows such as Ragtime, Miss Saigon, Cabaret, Last 5 Years, Wicked, Spring Awakening, etc. You will have a blast! Come prepared with a song to sing on the 1st day, preferably with sheet music (You can sing the same song for the Production audition). (period 5) CLOMP!: Ages 10-15 (Limit 16) Physical comedy meets theater meets “bangin’ on stuff.” We’ll be experimenting and choreographing original routines using unorthodox rhythm instruments—buckets, balloons, macaroni boxes, and plenty more—as we pay homage to everyone’s favorite “banging on trash cans” show…Like STOMP, but better…Clomp! (period 5) IMPROV-A-MUSICAL: Ages 12-15 (Limit 16) Do you want to make up a musical on the spot? No scripts–just ready, set, go! We will learn improvisational techniques and structures to create a musical out of thin air. If you like to sing, act, and be bravely wacky on stage, join us. Prior improv experience is encouraged! CRCAP has a limited number of cameras available for those unable to provide their own. Please contact office for details. PHOTO EXPLORERS: AGES 10+ (Limit 10) Do you love the darkroom? Are you tired of using the same old camera? Now is experience. your chance to discover a wider world of photography!and Learn to use all the different kinds of cameras that the pros use and strengthen your darkroom skills at the same time. (period 1) PHOTOSHOP: Ages 12-15 (Limit 6) Now that you’ve taken the picture, what’s next? In this class we’ll take ordinary pictures and explore using software to transform them into a different kind of art. We’ll add glow, change the look of photos to grunge, goth, or any combinations in between. We’ll create our own effects, and learn the language of photoshop. Layers, gaussian blur, and actions will have a whole new meaning. Note: This not a class where you learn to put your face on Jacob from Twilight’s body. Creativity and a willingness to experiment required! (period 1) BASIC DIGITAL PHOTO: (Limit 12) Using your own digital camera and the latest in computer editing software, document the evolution and emotion of life at CRCAP. Assembling the work into stunning digital slideshows, discover where art and commentary journalism meet head-to-head and walk into the sunset together whistling. Most of the projects are studentderived through group brainstorming sessions; collaboration is highly encouraged. No previous photography experience necessary: perfect for beginning and intermediate photographers. (period 2) PINHOLE CAMERA: (Limit 10) Ever wonder how a camera works? In pinhole photography we not only learn how cameras work but we build our own functioning cameras! We take you into the darkroom and build off the raw basics of photography. Using common household and found materials, we build pinhole cameras and use photo chemicals to develop paper negatives, producing silver gelatin prints. Discover not only the hands-on art of “old school” film developing but also the core principles of photographic experimentation. (period 2) BEGIN-STAGRAM: PHOTO JOURNALISM: Ages 8-12 (Limit 10) A picture is worth a thousand words, so let’s tell a story!! Working in partnership with the Daily Double, kids will take pictures relating to camp news that will then be published for the whole camp to see and enjoy! We will work not only on candid photography but also on titling and captioning our photos. Photojournalists will work both on individual exhibitions and group projects. Photo experience is great, but not necessary! (period 3) PHOTO PORTFOLIO: Ages 12-15 (Limit 6) Budding young photographer, photos scattered all over, needing input on putting your best work together into a statement of who you are as an artist? Here’s your chance to experiment, gets lots of feedback, fine-tune and polish your portfolio. Expect to write an artist’s statement and assemble your photographs into a finished digital portfolio. (period 3) ADVANCED DARKROOM PHOTO: Ages 12-15 (Limit 10) This offering is geared toward the student who has already taken a wet photography class at school or in another formal setting. We will re-introduce darkroom principals and learn more advanced print developing techniques. We develop our own negatives and work toward creating a stunning, cohesive collection of prints to exhibit on Festival Day and take home to melt the minds of unsuspecting friends and family. New to the darkroom? See “Basic Darkroom” class description. Students must bring their own 35mm SLR film camera with film. (period 5) STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY: Ages 12-15 (Limit 8) Experiment with light and light modifiers to digitally photograph people and objects in the studio. Learn the ins and outs of professional digital photography. In this class, shutterbugs will see their friends in a whole new light. (period 6) BASIC DARKROOM PHOTO: (Limit 10) Don’t be afraid of the dark! In this beginning darkroom photo class, we experiment with retro-cool “old school” film cameras, enlargers and the whole process of developing and printing our own pictures. Designed for campers with little to no darkroom experience, we go through every step of the process together. Students must bring their own 35mm SLR film camera with film. (period 6) SPORTS DEPARTMENT DEPT. HEAD: SCOTT GREEN POWER TUMBLING: (Limit 12) Are you an experienced gymnast? Would you like to sharpen your skills? Well, here’s your chance to perfect basic and intermediate skills while developing the more advanced skills of tumbling. Power up for Power Tumbling. (period 1) SOCCER: (Limit 22) Develop the fundamentals of soccer through exciting skill drills, scrimmages and games. Play the beautiful game that the rest of the world calls “football.” (period 1) ACROBATICS CLUB: (Limit 12) Are you eager to learn gymnastics, but never had the chance to try it? Well, here’s your chance to learn the fun basic elements of gymnastics. No experience required. Come and join the Acrobatics Club! (period 2) PING PONG PLUS: (Limit 12) Grab your paddle and power up for Ping Pong Plus! We’ll be teaching table tennis technique, and playing tons of other indoor sports. If you’re ready for some intense fun and competition, this is the class for you. (period 2) ULTIMATE FRISBEE: Ages 11-15 (Limit 16) Develop frisbee skills and play the ultimate game – Ultimate Frisbee! We will learn a variety of throwing styles and also create our own game of frisbee golf. This class is for anyone who enjoys throwing a frisbee or would like to learn. (period 2) AIKIDO: (Limit 16) Martial Art Aikido means, “the way of unity with the universal force.” Aikido is a martial art that teaches you to defend yourself without attacking or injuring your opponent. By using the round movements, timing and leverage of Aikido techniques, you avoid fighting strength with strength. Therefore size, age, and physical ability do not affect how well you do in Aikido. In this class you will learn basic techniques while working together in a noncompetitive, cooperative way. You will learn how to fall safely, and how to pin and/or throw your partners. While the class offers basic self-defense skills, we also concentrate on safety and having fun! All students should wear loose, long-sleeve clothing (sweatpants & shirts are best). (period 3) VOLLEYBALL: (Limit 16) Have some fun in the sun playing the official sport of summer. If you like tennis but think your hands would make better rackets, this is your calling. Learn basic technique, killer serves, and team spirit! Boys and girls of all ages and experience levels welcome. (period 3) B.I.G. GENERAL SPORTS: Ages 11-15 (Limit 18) Fun is the name of all the games played in this fresh edition of General Sports. We’ll focus on group activities such as Capture the Flag, Dodgeball and Kickball in addition to camp favorites like 4 Square, Ping Pong, and Super-Ultimate-Doctor-Flagball. Come have a blast playing your favorite games! (period 5) FENCING: Ages 11-15 (Limit 10) How many chances do you get to fight with swords? Unless you can travel back in time, probably not many. Take this rare opportunity to develop basic foil techniques, footwork and strategies to provide the foundation for further enjoyment and achievements in the sport of fencing. (period 5) GAME ON!: Ages 8-12 (Limit 16) If you love to play games, then Game On is for you. We focus on team-oriented games including Kickball, Monsterball, Wiffleball, Steal the Bacon, Assassin, Newcomb and Capture the Flag to name a few. Variety is the spice of life at Game On. Our emphasis is on sportsmanship and team fun in the sun. (period 5) BASKETBALL: Ages 11-15 (Limit 16) A fun and stimulating program that emphasizes skill development, exercises and scrimmages, played inside on the fancy courts! This is your chance to play basketball in a supportive, fun environment. (period 6) BATTER UP!: (Limit 12) Keep your knees bent and your eye on the ball, it's game time! Hone your batting, fielding, and teamwork skills in games and drills in Batter Up. No experience is necessary, just a love of the game. RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS: (Limit 12) Rhythmic gymnastics combines the grace of dance with the skill of gymnastics. We will be using equipment such as hoops, rope, balls and ribbon. Come discover this beautifully challenging, thrilling and rewarding Olympic event. No experience required. (period 6) SWIMMING AQUATICS DIRECTOR: M.L. SCHECHTER All swimming courses are conducted by certified Red Cross instructors. Free Swim is offered daily during Festival Period with no sign-up required (weather permitting) Swim4-6: is offered Festival Period with required (weather permitting) SWIMMINGFree LEVELS (Limitdaily 12) during Following a swim test on no thesign-up first day, campers receive the appropriate level of Red Cross swim instruction with plenty of one-on-one attention. Intermediate swimmers learn to swim the breaststroke and sidestroke while working to perfect the front crawl stroke, the back crawl stroke, and the elementary backstroke. Advanced swimmers learn the butterfly while working to perfect the front crawl stroke, back crawl stroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke. Advanced rescue techniques are taught here as well. (period 1) SWIMMING LEVELS 1-3: (Limit 12) Students learn how to be comfortable in the water. Following the official Red Cross curriculum, campers put their faces in, learn to float (stomach and back and develop a foundation of safety skills including fundamental rescue techniques. Intermediate swimmers learn the front crawl stroke, the back crawl stroke, and the elementary backstroke. A swim test on the first day ensures the appropriate level of individual instruction. (period 3) SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING: (Limit 12) Synchronized swimming is a combination of swimming, dance, and gymnastics. We’ll perform choreographed routines in the pool with musical accompaniment building to a Festival Day spectacular. We develop the routines as an ensemble, using the ideas and never-before-seen moves you invent. So much more than your average pool class! (period 5) POOL GAMES: (Limit 12) Come and play water games: water polo, water volleyball, relay races, treasure hunts and more in this cool class. We also create our own spectacular, splashy water works! What would summer be without time well-spent in our glistening pool? (period 6) TEXTILES DEPARTMENT DEPT. HEAD: ALETA DEYO CRCAP RUNWAY: (Limit 12) The challenge is to create a hi-fashion look from a grab bag of fabrics and trims! The trick is to use all the items in your bag in one fashionable look. The designers will sketch their ideas and the staff will help them draft patterns and construct their designs. Your project builds to a Festival Day fashion show on the CRCAP Runway. (period 1) DOLL CLOTHES: (Limit 12) Design and make clothes for your 18 inch doll. Have fun experimenting with modern and historical styles. Beginner methods of fashion illustration will be explored as the students design their unique looks for their dolls. Hand sewing and beginner level machine sewing skills will be taught and reinforced during the construction of the minifashion designs. (period 1) PUPPETRY: (Limit 12) Out of foam, fabric, thread, and glue comes the greatest of friends! Create soft hand puppets in the likeness of the most famous variety show hosts, the Muppets! Create a character and story for your puppet, connect it to other puppet friends and family, learn to control the puppets, and become an accomplished puppeteer. (period 1) COSTUMES: Ages 10-15 (Limit 12) We need costume designers, sewers, gluers, and people with lots of good ideas to help make the best costumes ever for Charles River Creative Arts plays and musicals. Help create the designs, and build the final costumes for the festival stage production. Sewing skills a plus but not necessary. (period 2) TRASH TO TREASURE: Ages 11-15 (Limit 10) Trash to treasure is a textiles/art class where we will make clothing, jewelry, and accessories out of recycled materials! All session we will experiment with newspaper, bottles, paperclips, cardboard, and much more! We will also explore all kinds of different ways to make apparel other than with fabric and a sewing machine, including gluing, stapling, and stringing. Sign up to channel your creative brain and have a blast with us! (period 2) CREEPY CREATURES: (Limit 10) Let your imagination run wild! Foam and fabric, paint and elastic – monsters and creatures will come to life. We will draw, pattern and build your ideas for your own soft sculpture monsters. Make ‘em goofy! Make ‘em scary! Make ‘em wild! (period 3) 3D PRINTING: Ages 10+ (LIMIT 8) Get an introduction to the emerging, exciting world of 3D Printing! Engineer strange insects, bizarre fruits, and anything that your mind conjures up! Students will sketch out their designs, learn to break them down into simple geometries, and then use their knowledge to create unique accessories and objects. (period 5) HANDBAGS & MORE: (Limit 10) Handbags, hats, headbands and more! Learn to make a wide variety of fashion accessories with fun fabrics and techniques. Whether you can sew already or not, you can make fashion accessories that will turn heads. Take your projects home at the end of the session and let the school year be your runway. (period 5) QUILTOPIA: (Limit 10) Begin with some basic piecing techniques as a jumping off point to make a quilt that expresses your own personality. This is a multi-level sewing class so come and learn to sew or if you already know how, come show us what you’ve got! The sky is the limit, the sewing room is your oyster! (period 5) RECYCLED FASHION: Ages 11-15 (Limit 12) Starting with bags of thrift store finds, the class will begin to breathe new life into old clothes. Piecing together different parts of the garments while embellishing these new creations with trim, paint and a bit of ingenuity, campers create new fashion looks for the year 2013! Our designers show off their talents at the CRCAP Festival Day Fashion Show. Sewing experience required. (period 6) KNITTY GRITTY: Ages 11-15 (Limit 12) Have you been eyeing those fabulous scarves and wondering if you could knit one too? Or, are you in the middle of a project and need a little help or inspiration? Knitty Gritty is a class for all knitters – if you don’t know how, we’ll teach you. If you already know how, we’ll help keep the needles moving. In this class we will get comfy and creative. Let’s get down to the knitty gritty. You’ll get to act in the movie version of our twisted tale, which will be shown in exciting segments at Noontime Shows throughout the session. This class is for all levels of experience, so you’ll also learn all the basics of performing in front of a video camera as we lead up to the premiere of the entire film on Festival Day! (period 1) SUMMER SHORTS: Ages 11-15 (Limit 14) It’s Shorts weather! We experiment with making films in short forms— commercials, movie trailers, skits, and anything else we come up with. Full of fast-paced fun, we premiere our Shorts in front of camp during Noontime Shows and on Festival Day. Break out the shorts and join in! (period 1) MUSIC VIDEOS: (Limit 12) Do you have a favorite CRCAP song that would make an amazing music video? Do you long to combine your love of music and seeing yourself on screen? Then join us in Music Video, where we will create, direct, and star in our own unique videos for classics from the CRCAP Songbook! Anything can happen in a music video, so bring your creativity and we’ll give camp songs a whole new life! (period 2) AMOS OSGOOD’S COMEDY HOUR: (Limit 12) Amos Osgood, famous comedian and host of Amos Osgood’s Comedy Hour, has gone missing. The network is anxious and we need a strong comedy team to pick up his slack! Together we need to write, perform, and produce his weekly comedy variety show and keep those ratings up!!! (period 3) MINI-MOVIE: Ages 8-11 (Limit 12) A class designed for the youngest of filmmakers, Mini-Movies will teach the basics of filmmaking to artists ages 8 – 10. The class will produce amazing mini-movies each week. Funny , dramatic, and fantastic, Mini-Movies provide experience with acting, directing, story-telling and shooting. (period 3) MOCKUMENTARY: Ages 11-15 (Limit 16) The return of an old favorite! In the tradition of “This is Spinal Tap”, “The Office”, and “Parks and Recreation”, this class will create situations, characters, and stories whose lives will unfold, hilariously, before the camera. Conduct comical interviews, improvise intricate scenes, and craft complex plots in this imaginative class! (period 5) LIVE ACTION ANIMATED MOVIE: Ages 11-15 (Limit 10) Worlds collide as Live Action Animation blends live action performances with animated characters and settings. In this brand new class we’ll explore special techniques like pixelation animation and rotoscoping to create imaginative new worlds and characters. If you’re into special effects and dreaming up fantastic situations then join Live Action Animation and let your imagination run wild! (period 6) WRITING DEPARTMENT DEPT. HEAD: WALKER ANDERSON ADVANCED CREATIVE WRITING: Ages 11-15 (Limit 12) Write something shocking. Write something heartbreaking. Write something brilliant. Write short stories that create unforgettable characters in just a few pages. Write a poem that describes a perfect day in seven perfect lines. Students can explore the genres or styles they want, supported by a community of writers who can support, advise, and bounce ideas off each other. The written word can change the world; if you are a budding author who wants to sharpen your skills, join us! (period 1) RADIO PLAY: (Limit 16) Has anyone ever said "you have a face for radio" to you? Got an ear for snappy dialogue? Think you have a future on NPR? Radio Play lets you create a riveting drama, a sizzling soap opera, a satirical quiz show, or all three at once - the sky's the limit. Want your story to be set in space, starring a Swedish hedgehog detective? We can find just the right sound effects to make it happen. Campers will write a new installment of our audio adventure every week, record themselves acting it out, mix in music and sound, and perform the grand finale episode live on stage Festival Day. (period 1) SKETCH-O-MATIC COMEDY WRITING: AGES 11-15 (LIMIT 8) For those with a kooky comedic mind too great for Saturday Night Live, Sketch-O-Matic is the class designed to unleash your brilliance. Join our collaborative writing room where we will teach you the basics of writing funny sketches, parody songs, bizarre monologues, and more! Watch as your comedic pieces come to life when other classes across camp use your writing in their own live performances! (period 2) ONE-A-DAY WRITEAMIN: (Limit 10) A new project every day. Those new to creative writing will learn a variety of games and brainstorming activities to access the weird, funny, creative parts of the brain. Write a poem about light bulb-obsessed monkey lawyers. Write a 1-page novel about your family’s trip to Mars last year. Write your life story in sidewalk chalk. Don’t be limited by paper – the world is your notebook! (period 2) DAILY DOUBLE: (Limit 18) The longest running newspaper in Dover needs you! Help us meet our daily deadline with your stories, opinions, news, reviews, interviews, features, advice columns, cartoons, puzzles, drawings, and personal adventures. Our own “liberated press,” the Daily Double is distributed camp-wide each day and posted to the CRCA website for all the world to see. Contribute to the print edition, the online blog, or both. Let your voice be heard! (periods 3, 5) POETRY PLUS:(Limit 8) It’s poetry PLUS adventure, beauty, humor, brainteasers, humdingers, mysterious characters, exotic settings, monsters, flowers, planets, faces, castles, and anything else you can think of! You could be the next Emily Dickinson or William Wordsworth, who knows? (period 6) SHORT STORIES: (Limit 8) Get ready to pack a big punch with a short story! Write a six word story, telling so much with so little. Or, write the scariest story on the planet. What happens in a Fan Fiction where Katniss and Hermione go on an adventure to take down the Ministry of Magic at the Capitol? It’s up to you. Write a new mythology with the Greek Gods, or the Egyptian Gods, or new Gods that are about to take over. Write your memoir, where each year of your life is only one sentence long.
