Study Abroad Financial Information 2015/16 Estimated costs for exchange students in Japan When selecting where you would like to study, please do take into account the amount of the financial guarantee required, the size and location of the university, the climate, and the recreational facilities available. You also need to make sure that your chosen university has modules (classes) that appeal to you. Students do not pay any tuition fees to the host university. Please note there will be tuition fees payable to the University of Kent. For those going abroad for one semester, the full tuition fee will be payable. If you are going abroad for a year, then students are currently charged 15% of the full tuition fee. Before you accept a placement, please take time to speak to your sponsors/parents to confirm that you are able to afford the term/year abroad. You must make sure you have sufficient funds available to you on arrival at your host university or work placement, to cover the initial costs. You should also budget for the remainder of your time abroad. Costs that you will incur will vary according to the type of placement (study or work), where your placement is (country and city/town) and what you wish to do whilst on placement. Students will be asked to complete an Arrival Assistance Form after they have been accepted to the program. Students will be greeted at the airport and directed to buses bound for APU. This service is available at Fukuoka Airport International Terminal and Oita Airport. Please bear in mind that bus tickets and freight charges will be borne by the student (3,190 JPY from Fukuoka Airport and approximately 1,700 JPY from Oita Airport). Insurance All exchange/study abroad students at APU are required to purchase the Japan National Health Insurance plan (NHI) and Student’s Comprehensive Renters Insurance (for personal liability). These insurance plans do not cover their travel periods before arriving in Japan and after leaving APU when returning home; therefore, students are encouraged to purchase an appropriate insurance to cover their travels. Meals We do not have meal plans for students and meals are not included in the program fees. Students will have the option of eating at the APU cafeteria or cooking in the communal kitchens. To eat at the cafeteria, students will need approximately 300-500 yen for breakfast and 400-1000 yen for lunch and dinner. AGU will, on behalf of exchange students, apply to the Tokyo Immigration Bureau for the Certificate of Eligibility (COE). As soon as the COE is issued, it will be sent to your institution. You will need to bring the COE to the local Japanese embassy or consulate and obtain a Student Visa. Kobe University Exchange students must certify at least ¥1,200,000 per year. National Health Insurance covers 70% of medical costs. Individuals must pay the 30% balance to the treatment center. A National Health Insurance card must be presented at the reception of the medical treatment center.
