President’s Message
“Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement,
achievement, and success have no meaning.”

President
Tonya Bush
The Junior Leagues of today are a dynamic mix of talented, diverse women.
Social activist Mary Harriman, founding the Junior League in 1901, certainly
could not have imagined that -115 years later- the organization would be composed of 291 Leagues from four countries and include more than 150,000
women volunteers.

VOL. 48, ISSUE #1
The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) continues to work tirelessly to keep
the Junior League relevant in today’s world, where women’s professional opportunities have
expanded as has the demand for women leaders in the civic sector. Women have many more
choices on where to invest their time and talents, and AJLI wants to help ensure the Junior
League continues to provide meaningful experiences well into the future. AJLI’s “Road to Transformation” consists of utilization of technology and social media, training, and paradigm shifts in
governance, impact-based community focus, and membership. Information on this (and MANY
AJLI resources) is located at www.ajli.org.
The Junior League of Billings has also seen some recent transformation. With the successful transition of Wise Wonders becoming its own 5013C in September 2014, JLB interviewed numerous
community agencies before selecting poverty and homelessness as its focus in 2015. This
presents opportunities ranging from education and literacy to the current needs of homeless or low
-income families.
August marked our 5th Free Laundry Event – recently partnering with Family Services to reach
additional clientele. Community Council also continues to work hard scheduling meaningful impact projects for this year!
Fund Development, the JLB’s means of sustaining our community efforts and training, has been
rocking and rolling all summer long! MarketPlace Magic planning is underway, and the JLB is
looking for all to play a part at building a wonderful event.
Membership Mixers have been a fun addition to the summer and are a great lead-in to our traditional New Member Social. League training development and new member training revamp are in
the works already. Thanks Membership Council!
The Website Ad-Hoc Committee has been investing an incredible amount of time over the
last six months in the development of the new JLB Website. Stand-by for the roll-out of this
amazing site! Thank you to Allison Murphine, Jennifer Webber, Sandra Gebhardt, and Anne
Holub.
Last, we are very excited to announce that JLB has secured a membership with the Petroleum
Club and will conduct our Fall General Meetings at this scenic venue located on the 22 nd Floor of
Crown Plaza. The Petroleum Club is finishing renovations and will be staying open on these
Tuesday evenings to host the JLB. We are also thrilled to extend associate memberships for all
actives and sustainers for a reduced fee. (More information will follow!). Join us early the evening
of our September 13 Meeting and check out the venue and the amazing view of the beautiful community where we live, work and serve.
Growth, progress, improvement, achievement, success… THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF
THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF BILLINGS!

GRANT RECIPIENT
This August, the Junior league of Billings was one
of ten nonprofit recipients of a $500 grant from the
Billings Association of Realtors. Each recipient
was invited to meet with the award team individually to give a brief presentation about their organization. Jennifer Webber, President Elect, accepted on behalf of JLB and spoke to the group about
the League’s focus of training women as leaders,
our history of service in the community and our
newest service project, the free Laundry Day.
The grant was awarded specifically to support this
new effort and provides more than enough funds
to support two laundry events, allowing members
of our community to get a necessary and essential
chore taken care of at no cost to them. JLB thanks
Koinonia Laundry for partnering with JLB in this
effort.

Why Self Nominate?
It really is easier than you think!
The Junior League of Billings started in 1954 by a group of women who knew
they could make a difference in the lives of those in our community. Today we
support numerous partner agencies through monetary support and volunteerism.
To ensure the Junior League of Billings functions successfully requires the support and enthusiasm of a number of women working together towards common
goals and the shared mission of JLB. From the President to Council Chairs each
women has an important role in furthering the future of JLB.
As a member of the JLB you may have participated in many different councils,
chaired a project, connected with a variety of community partners. You may
have great ideas about new fundraising opportunities or feel you have the enthusiasm or skills to guide our League into the future. However, you never really
knew how to get into one of these positions that requires “nominating.”
Join us for an evening of Bingo,
basket raffles, row-sham-bow,
food and drinks.

The process starts in the fall to fill the position of President Elect-Elect. This person will serve as the President Elect in 2017-2018 and President in 2018-2019.
To self-nominate for this position simply fill out the attached form in the Jabberwock and submit it to any nominating committee member. The questionnaire is
simple, asking a few questions about who you are, roles you have held in the
League or in your other volunteer/professional life and positions you are interested in and why. Next, you will be contacted by a nominating committee member
and invited to chat about your interest. See, simple!!!!! You can do it, and if for
no reason you may be the next President of the Junior League of Billings and not
even know it yet.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL
July had a major calling for Junior League members
with the flood at the MT Rescue Mission. As you
know Granny’s attic (owned by MRM) had a water
main break and flood ceiling high inside the building.
This back washed into the basement of the men’s
shelter putting their kitchen at a stand still. JLB members served about 44 MRM patrons with pulled pork
on August 4. Thank you to the rockstars to fit it in their
busy schedules to help cook, deliver food, and serve
food. I so appreciated all of you coming together last
minute and MRM appreciated it did even more! They
thanked us so many times; your good deed went a
long way.
JLB held another laundry day on July 23 at
Koinonia! We served about 20 customers (mainly
from Family Service) and provided $269 in laundry
with 8 JLB volunteers. We had a full crew and family
service customers were very thankful for the help!
Please sign up
for the August 20
laundry day
which Kelsey
Krumm will be
taking the lead
on.
We are working
on filling out our
annual calendar
with other impact
day events. We
have an exciting
new opportunity
with YBGR and
Dress for Success
which is being
worked on. Stay
tuned!

MEMBERSHIP COUNCIL
Membership Council just recently met
to send out over 40 invites to the New
Member Social. Thank you to all of
you who have submitted names of potential members to us. By the time this
Jabberwock goes out, the Social will
have occurred and I am excited to see
how wonderful it turns out! The membership council has a goal as part of
the Strategic Plan of 2015-16 to recruit
a minimum of 15 new members per
League Year. This puts us off to a
great start. We are hoping to increase
our active membership to 65 by 2018.
I am so happy to see all of us working
so hard to grow the League together!
Once a part of the Junior League of
Billings, we want to be sure everyone is
getting what they want out our organization. One of the goals that membership council has found many of us have
is to meet and socialize more with others, especially those outside of our
councils. Membership Council has already had two successful membership
mixers with many more in the future.
We have met for coffee and wine. The
conversation and company was amazing! We would love to see more social
interaction between councils at the
General Membership Meetings as well,
so don’t forget to say hi to everyone!
Don’t be afraid to start up a conversation with someone you don’t know. We
all have at least one thing in common,
a love for Junior League!
Best,
Jennifer Massey and the
