Gerald and Daisy
The inspector asks Gerald about his friendship with Daisy Renton.
Gerald says that he met Daisy in the bar at the Palace Music Hall, where
prostitutes usually go.
Gerald saw the alderman Joe Meggarty troubling Daisy. Gerald decided to help
her and gave her an apartment to stay in. Later Gerald had an affair with Daisy
but the affair ended.
Gerald apologises to the inspector, but not to Sheila. Sheila asks for an apology.
The inspector asks if Gerald loved Daisy. Gerald hesitates.
Sheila mocks Gerald. She thinks he loved being a hero.
The inspector then tells Gerald that Daisy went to the seaside alone when the
affair ended.
Sheila gives the engagement ring back to Gerald. She is angry. However, she says
she is pleased that Gerald is being honest now.
Mrs Birling cannot believe that the alderman Joe Meggarty was in the music hall.
The music hall is not a respectable place, but Joe Meggarty is a well-respected
man.
Gerald leaves the house to go for a walk.

Mrs Birling and the girl
The inspector says that Mrs Birling is an important member of a women’s charity.
The inspector says that Eva Smith (Daisy Renton) came to the charity to ask for
help. She didn’t have any money. She told the charity her surname was ‘Birling.’
Mrs Birling was furious because she was using the surname ‘Birling’ and refused
to help her.
Mrs Birling tells the inspector she didn’t do anything wrong. The inspector tells
Mrs Birling that she was wrong. He tells her that she will be sorry because she
didn’t help Eva.
Mrs Birling tells the inspector that she knew Eva was pregnant and that she
thought the father of the unborn baby should help Eva.
Sheila tells her mother that she was cruel. However, Mrs Birling doesn't believe
she is responsible for Eva’s death.
The inspector says that Eva had refused the money from the father of the
baby, because the father had stolen the money.
Mrs Birling tells the inspector that the father of the unborn baby is to blame
for Eva’s death.
Sheila is horrified. She realises that Eric is the father of the unborn child.
Eric enters the room, looking very pale and upset.
