Sherwood, Assistant Principal of M attituck High School. T he program is sponsored by One Thing — Or Another THE GOOD OLE L. I. R. R. A few weeks ago Senator Ford in his column "C haff” devoted some com m en t on th e present combining tra in and-bus m ethod th e Long Island R ail road Is using to get passengers to and from th e city, said comments n ot being a hundred per cent complimentary. I would like to suggest to the Senator th a t h e read “Steel Ralls to th e S u n rise” an d by so doing he would u n d er sta n d how th e waywaird child happened to tu rn out th e way it did. I had a very entertaining afternoon Wihen two personable young authors; Ron Ziel an d George H. Foster called a t my home, as they had called on nearly every other LIR R employee or form er employee th a t they could lo cate, In search of pictures or other in form ation th a t would be of value in compiling d ata for their forthcoming book. I am happy th a t I was able to contribute in a small way w ith a n in cident or two. They were interested In a couple of snapshots which I hope they WDiUfi use, b u t they came up w ith m uch b etter ones from other sources. Libraries, barrooms, an d photographers, am ateur an d professional, were in te r viewed in th e process of gathering m aterial. The result is a wonderful book, w ith pictures galore, history of th e road from its beginning, together w ith its trium phs and trials, mostly th e latter. One little known fac t of the rail road’s early history is th a t w hat we know as th e m ain line was built through th e central p a rt of Suffolk County, th e n mostly unsettled wood land, along th e N orth Fork to G reen p o rt because th e m anagem ent <^esired to ru sh express train s tow ard Boston. Down a t th e west end of th e Island there developed any num ber of com petitive sm all railroads, operating in and around Brooklyn, Jam aica, Rockaway, H em pstead and Flushing, all in tim e uniting to make one big an<^ happy (?) LIRR, th e world largest com muting road. W hile th ere is n o t m uch m ention of P resident R alp h Peters, who was a t th e helm for a period of years, th ere is m uch about one of th e earlier presi dents, Oliver Charlick, who m ust have been a lulu. Among his favorite pro cedures was to ru n th e rails around any village th a t fought his plans, or, if th e rails were already laid, to have th e sta tio n located a t a place most inconvenient for th e villagers. Preslf’e n t A ustin Corbin was one who re ceived bouquets. D uring his m anage m ent th e road enjoyed halcyon days of progress an d prosperity, and even paid dividends continuously from 1880 th ro u g h 1896. The au th o rs show fam iliarity w ith every type of locomotive an'^ passenger car, past an d present. They are fully illustrated. Of special interests to N orth Forkers are pictures an d incidents of snowstorms, snowplows bucking drifts, tra in wrecks, particularly th e pickle factoi-y wreck a t Calverton in 1926. E ast end train s w ith monikers such as th e Bean T rain, th e Scott, an d the Jigger. One train overlooked was the one we used to call th e P aper train . I t was of th e same class, a two passener car an d a baggage car outfit th a t ha/i connected w ith a south side train a t E astport or Manorville, bringing ex press and m ail from New York and our m orning newspaper, hence a paper train . Due a t M attituck a t around 9:30 A. M., it usuaJly arrived any tim e be tween 10:30 an d 11, and on th e few occasions it arrived on time, th e sta tion employees were caught by surprise an d came running from all directions to m eet It and help unloa'^. T he long forgotten steam ship lines th e railroad operated are n o t over looked, b u t given several pages. There is an article about a bike rider who claim ed he could ride as fast as a LIR R train , and on a specially constructed platform between th e rails ro^e his bike behind a train, clocking ju st a bit under 60 seconds, and gained fame and th e nam e of M ile-a- M inute Murphy. And lots and lots of other features. Its a grand book. D. R. O. SOUTHOLD FUEL OIL COMPANY Golden Touch Added John Grigoms, Prop. SO 5-2523 the Raym ond Cleaves American Legion Post 861.
