Annual General Meeting – More like the Palm D’Or; with all
the awards and kudos being handed out; as well as interesting
audio and film presentations - so you’d be forgiven for thinking
so. Not only was Mark Rodriquez elected as the new president,
he also received the Barry Charles Award for Outstanding
Contribution. This is an annual award of excellence to be
presented to the most outstanding Noosa Community Radio
volunteer. A wonderful new inspiration devised to illustrate
that assistance towards the requirements of NCR, does not go
unnoticed. Mark, of course, is best known for his tireless
efforts regarding the regular stall at the Farmers’ Market,
which is doing wonderfully well in all aspects: gaining more
recognition for the radio station; enhancing membership
numbers, subscribers; promoting events, as well as helping
charities.
Moy Sweetman received a cheque from NCR for the sum of
$1,338.50, presented by outgoing president Leonie Phillips Frangipani Dreams being the charity NCR had adopted for this
year.
Mary Rose received the O.B. (Order of the Broom) in
appreciation of all her cleaning work; a gift of miniature broom
& chocs, tastefully decorated by Jolene Winkel.
Frank Wilkie took the chair during election of new management.

101.3 Club: This is a new concept to develop
from your president
Hi all, we’ve arrived kicking and screaming at base camp 101.3.
You’ve chosen me to lead your team up the mountain called 101.3fm at the
J. I’m used to working behind the scenes, so my first learning curve is in
benefits to all members of 101.3fm; such as
discount prices at specific businesses. Coming
soon so keep a look out for more details!
Rose White – Events Co-ordinator.
becoming NCR front man for you all, and also in regard to the media - I
got quite a shock when I was asked to speak for a TV interview at our 1st
anniversary open day at the J. Luckily they picked out my best bit:
”We’ve had a huge year, we’ve settled in and we have a lot to learn.”
(More on open day below) I am thrilled to be president in this
organization, with so many dedicated people - so much energy being
devoted to the growth and success of our alternative community
voice…by the people, for the people.
The aim is to create more fun, and to increase your involvement
in the running of the station, by making members’ meetings more personal
with more input. For this to work, we need you to attend; be positive;
open-minded; and to be prepared. Agendas and reports will be emailed
prior to allow you to digest BEFORE these meetings so that meeting time
is reduced to short presentations and your prepared questions. The
forum question for our December 5th meeting is: “How to involve
everyone in a fun and rewarding way.” There will also be time for
general business to be called from the floor. Please frame your
questions with a positive outlook. See you at 5.30 for a drink on us.
Meeting starts with a fun “ice-breaker” at 6.
Training
We have a new group of 14 presently undergoing
training, two of which are for the news reading
team plus we have two 11 year old trainees,

February.
Graduates from previous training are: Mary
Elizabeth McCarthy – Mirin’s Mix, Tuesdays
6.05–8pm; Kerry Fiona Redfern – Enviro Chat,
Wednesdays 11.05–midday; Jason Slack-Smith
(DJ Sun) with Matt Bushell (Mattamation) – Activ

Thursdays 8-10pm; Bill Parlin – Nothing But
Frank, Saturdays 12-1pm; Leah Barclay – Sonus
Lab, Sundays 6-8pm.
Well done all.

We’ve gone back to the old way of relating directly to committee
coordinators instead of using the portfolio model adopted over the last
few years. We feel that this will remove a layer of bureaucracy, and
foster more grass roots involvement.
Studio 3 (production studio) is nearing completion, and positive
communication is underway with Council to rectify acoustic problems with
what will become our main studio. This will be quite a process, with some
upheaval when it comes to fruition. Some acoustic tiles have been bought
to improve internal acoustics in the interim.
Sylvana Scannapiego has been appointed as Publicity Officer,
and is rearing to go. Please send all publicity requests and info to Sylvana
at [email protected] Everyone can help raise the 101.3fm
profile by being active in promoting local events: on air and when we go
into the public arena.
As president, I aim to be available to all: Contact me on 0423
365 589 during the day; at the studios Tuesdays and Fridays or email
[email protected] Feel free to suggest things, ask questions,
help, or even criticise, me (so long as it’s constructive) – I’m only human
and will probably make mistakes along with successes. From the chief
who values his indians, I look forward to our time together.

Noosa Farmers’ Market
We recently did a very successful outside
broadcast from the market in support of Down
Syndrome Awareness Week. (See Gisa's story)
Many thanks to the Noosa Arts Theatre for giving
us access to their phone line at short notice at an
ungodly hour. We have found a good niche at the
Farmers’ Market, and the public are coming
through our doors because of our presence there.
It takes a lot of energy to keep this ball rolling and
I would greatly appreciate members’ committing to
help, via the roster at the studios, or by phoning
me in advance - 0423 265 589. This will prevent
my premature baldness due to worry, and also
reduce my phone bill. We take the stall on the
2nd and 4th Sunday of every month. Roster at the
th
studios covers up to 10 February 2008 at present
- let's see how soon we can fill it.
Thanks, Mark

Open Day
Classical Concert Review
The 101.3fm open day was supported by 53 of our members - well
done team! Local music was laid on, thanks to Pantasic Steel Band,
Barry Charles, Scott Estrich and co., Hari Bandhu, Kate Gibson,
Fire Free, Lucas Tranchitella, DJ Jsun, Jose Cubis, Cathy Young,
Kenny G, Hinemana, and Damien.
What an excellent night! The talent available in Noosa
is extraordinary. Mary Mosses played Mozart and
Schubert, and was outstanding. Hettie Van Wyk has the
purest soprano voice imaginable and held the audience
spellbound throughout her recital.
Strings n' Things is a most remarkable ensemble.
Everything they played from The Beatle's Michelle to
Vivaldi had the audience in rapt silence.
The concert opened with the first of our 'surprises' in the
form of Don Drysdale who appeared at the back of the
hall piping Amazing Grace much to the audience's
amusement.
Speaking of amusement, we were let down at the last
moment by our comedy duo who were unable to come.
The M.C. for the night (me) filled in with some punny
stories reminiscent of the famous comedy trio of Frank
Muir, Dennis Norden and Nancy Spain (BBC’s "My
Word" series). I guess that was the second surprise!
We were also delightfully entertained by the dancing of
12 year old Libby Hendrie who was accompanied by Iain
MacLean's violin rendition of The Secret Garden. Her
dance was our third surprise and was well worth the
wait.
All in all it was an excellent night. The poor turnout,
particularly by our own members, was a great pity
expecially as they missed a top event. Peter Browne
There was face painting by Alessandra; station tours; and DVD’s of
our “10 to air” pilot youth training scheme and award entry for
CBAA station of the year, showing on the big screen inside the J.
There was a scrumptious mud cake provided by Designer Desserts;
bottled water provided by Cooroy Mountain Spring Water, and
bananas provided by Brown’s Farm. We are blessed with such
community support. Zinc fm were also present on invitation from
the j. We believe “Noosa Norm” made his own special comment on
that. See photo caption competition.
I believe we have to find our niche in our own market place
through using and communicating our strengths. Mark
Youth Update
In terms of the youth
committee, a meeting was held a week back.
Also I’ve been advertising the station at university,
and believe I might have had some success - I
noticed that Emily James has signed up for news
reading, attributed
to the advertising on campus.
I have also set up a presence on the net, so if you
happen to be near a computer, drop everything and
head over to youtube.com/youthonair to check out
our very own You Tube channel! Hopefully this
might convince some people to become members,
or at least raise awareness about 101.3fm amongst
the square-eyed couch potatoes.
Happy anniversary 101.3fm! That was a great day
at the J on November 3.
Have a merry Christmas and happy new year...

th
Outside Broadcast, Farmers’ Market – 14 October in aid of Down Syndrome Awareness Week.
And what a great day it was! From 9 – 11am, 101.3fm entertained the community. The esteemed presenters were the Polynesian
Princess and Dave Zuppini, who candidly interviewed the ever so anxious young people with Down Syndrome – there was: Shane, Alex, Jana,
Jo and Kate who happily but nervously, tried to answer questions. But they liked most to talk about what they are doing and how they are
feeling, totally enjoying their time in front of the mike while their parents were content listening in the background.
Also invited was the very knowledgeable Dr Ann Jobling from Qld University, who has been studying those with Down Syndrome
for over 35 years. Dr Jobling talked about a programme for young adults – post school - called “Latch-On” which she developed at the
University, and is now being franchised by the Endeavour Foundation. This programme gives young people further education in preparation
in jobs, social interaction, independent living, etc. – skills everyone should master?! This education programme will now be offered by the
Endeavour Foundation in Bundaberg, Townsville and the Gold Coast. But even more are needed – and we need one here, on the Sunshine
Coast!
We sold merchandise, raised funds for the association and hopefully, made many visitors to the market aware of what a great bunch
of these young people there are out there, and wanting to make a go at whatever they can.
We all had a terrific day: the music was great; the weather was hot; the presenters had fun; and the technical superman, Harry M,
was as always outstandingly super efficient. Well done, and thanks to all. Gisa Weatherill.
*Giza is a presenter on Classical Lunch, midday Thursdays.
101.3fm BUDDIE PROGRAMME
With more growth leading us into 2008, NCR
management and committeees need great more
assistance.
The Buddie Programme is a
campaign to create awareness of marketing
activities our members require. By creating
this we are hopeful of at least 60 members
signing up to assist where and when they can.
This includes members who have never been
involved in assisting: presenters in training and
those newly trained.
Forms are available at reception, or me at the
studios with your name and contact details.

101.3fm at the ARIA Awards
Red carpet for Nathan Evans, 101.3 member and latter day presenter,
who attended the glittering ARIA Awards on 28th October.
Nathan was seated at the gold ticket tables with the celebs, and
chatted with the likes of the latest, and past, Australian Idol
contestants: also Andy and Hamish; several Home and Away stars;
Powderfinger (who stayed same floor in same hotel): Megan Gale who
was in his room having her makeup done (oh yeah?!).
“Powderfinger’s Lost & Running was definitely best performance of
the night – the atmosphere was electric and the audience joined in the
chorus. Walking the red carpet was awesome, it was lined with
thousands of screaming teenagers,” said Nathan.
OHS/HRU UPDATE
If there is an argument, disagreement, difference of opinion or clash
between two or more people, it is usually best in the first instance, for
those people to talk directly to each other and endeavour to resolve the
conflict or dispute. Should the parties not be able to resolve the matter
amicably themselves, the following dispute settlement process should be
followed.
Interpersonal Dispute:
1. If the conflict or dispute concerns the behaviour of a person or
persons, the matter should first be discussed with one or more of the
station's Human Resource Unit Representatives.
2. The HRU Representative will endeavour to respond expediently and
will normally offer suggestions, options and procedural guidance
towards resolving the issue.
3. Should the HRU Representative recommend the conflict or dispute be
referred to the Management Committee, the HRU Representative can
provide assistance in how best to present the matter to Management.
4. In regard to interpersonal issues the HRU may occasionally
recommend the involvement of mediation professionals subject to the
prior approval of the Management Committee. Management may also
decide to involve a professional mediator to resolve a complaint
situation.
Complaint About Management or Sub-Committee:
If a person has a complaint about a decision or action taken by
Management or a sub-committee, details (in writing) should be lodged
with the Management Committee.
The current HRU/OHS Representatives are:

Jazz Notes with Brian Fane.
If you’ve been listening to the jazz programmes on Noosa Community
Radio, you will have heard several Australian modern jazz c.d’s being
played. We have some of the finest musicians here but, unfortunately,
many have to go overseas to either be appreciated, or to earn a reasonable
living, as our live jazz venues are limited and the jazz c.d. market is small
compared to the big overseas markets. However, there is excellent modern
jazz around if you are prepared to look for it - and travel. There are very
good gig venues in Brisbane - check out the Brisbane Jazz Club website or
Brisbane Jazz website; you may be surprised at the good jazz around. And
unless we support our jazz muso’s by either going to some gigs or buying
their c.d.’s, you can’t complain about there not being much modern jazz
around. So take a look around, and do a little travel. Here are reviews on
some recent releases, from both overseas and local artists:
Herbie Hancock River - The Joni Letters - Universal Music
Melbourne
This is a collection of Joni Mitchell’s songs - vocal and instrumental either
composed or influenced by Joni. Guest vocalists include Norah Jones, Tina
Turner, Corrine Bailey Rae and Luciana Souza. Wayne Shorter is featured
on reeds. A c.d. that demands playing a few times to understand and
appreciate the beauty of the Hancock approach. Joni’s melodies and lyrics
don’t fit the accepted style: she likes, as does Herbie, to break new ground
and bring incessant and profound creations of sounds into her music. Listen
closely, quietly, and enjoy the beauty of this music.
Graham Jesse/Adrian Cunningham Quintet - Blow - Newmarket
Music Melbourne
Listen to this c.d. and you will buy, and play it repeatedly. Graham and
Adrian wrote all compositions, except one. They are fresh and “with it” in
the modern style. Track 3 has some wonderful interplay between flute and
clarinet. For Our Children, written by Adrian, is a beautiful melody. These
guys are supported by the best musicians. This is a pleasure to review, and
to play on our programmes. These two guys stretch each other and then
combine as one sound. Buy it, you won’t be sorry.
Happy “jazzing”, Brian.

Blue Monday Update with Al Hensley
Hi Blues Buffs, Among the new 'Best Of' CD collections that
come out around this time of year, are a couple that will make
good Xmas gifts for blues fans: Sydney's Bondi Cigars have a
double CD anthology just released called 32 Premium Quality
Cuts. While their contemporary blues has a strong R&B
influence, on the traditional side there's a new outing by Chicago
blues band Magic Slim & The Teardrops led by Mississippi
transplant Morris Holt (aka Magic Slim). Released on Blind Pig
Records, it's called The Essential Magic Slim and its gutbucket
sound harkens the great Muddy Waters and Hound Dog Taylor.
These are currently on the Blue Monday playlist if you'd like to
tune in and check them out.
Another platter getting plenty of spins on the program
is World Full Of Blues by Rhode Island master guitarist and
singer Duke Robillard, whose life-long quest is to explore the
almost infinite range of blues styles. It's released locally on
Stony Plain Records and is also a double CD set.Still popular today
is the original country blues style, which is really just acoustic
blues (usually solo).
One of the early exponents of country blues in the
twenties was legendary Texas guitarist Blind Lemon Jefferson
who was the role model for many future blues musicians from his
home state. Two of those presently getting airplay on Blue
Monday are Black Ace and Lil' Son Jackson, both of whom
recorded some great sides for Arhoolie Records circa 1960.
These however, are not as easy to get hold of.
Finally, I should remind blues musicians that The
Sunshine Coast Blues Club Noosa Branch has moved its monthly
jam to the Boathouse Restaurant, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville. It
still happens on the third Wednesday of the month, and don’t
forget the club's monthly Nambour jam at the newly renovated
Royal George Hotel, every first Thursday of the month.
Meanwhile, season's greeting to all and look out in the newsletter
soon for my pick of 2007's best blues and related albums.
HappyTrails for now, Al.

Travellers’ tales and tracks with Sherry & Fuzz
There are so many visitors to Noosa, and I think they were ALL in the studio on our first Thursday programme of Backpacker
Radio! We had two English ladies, who just may turn out to be ‘overstayers’ because their one week in Noosa has become 5
months in Noosa. There was one French lad; two German lads; two Swiss ladies and another who was Korean. They all told us
about their holiday in Noosa: who they’ve been meeting, and what they’ve been doing (learning to surf, Fraser Island, etc…); what
they like best and what they’ll be doing next. We asked them to play some hot hits from their home towns, but unfortunately our
computer speaks ipod about as well as Fuzz speaks Korean. But Lo! Kitten saves the day with an impromptu live session right
there in the studio, giving birth to what is becoming the most popular segment of the show. This was set in concrete the
following week when the honorable Frank Wilke stopped in to give us his version of Monty Python’s ‘The Universe’ song on his
trusty ukulele.
Live in the studio next was local singer/songwriter Jade, along with a riveting interview between myself and ex Men at Worker,
Colin Hay. Add to this a new stew of VIP’s (Very Itinerant Party-ers) and you’ve got a typical evening on Backpacker Radio! More
next time, xxx Sherry & that Fuzz man, Mark.
Backpacker Radio hosted by Sherry Corcoran and Mark “Fuzz” Gerrett, goes to air Thursdays 6 to 8pm

Editor’s Bit
Well, lots of things have occurred since the last tabloid: namely
the outside broadcast at the Farmers’ Market; the thrills of the AGM
(not quite up to Nathan’s little effort but not far behind!) There was also
the excitement and fun of open day marking NCR’s 1st anniversary at the
j. Deputy Mayor Frank Pardon gave a warm speech and cut the cake along
with new prez., Mark Rodriquez: a wonderful huge mud cake which
excited the taste buds into wanting more. In it’s 13th year, the radio
station has achieved so much, apart from it’s spanking new premises, such
as just receiving the award for community radio of the year – what a
coup!
At the AGM, Debbie Noyek put me to the blush by making a
lovely speech thanking me for my efforts with airwaves, which was very
kind of her and very much appreciated. Made all the effort feel more
worthwhile, so thank you Debbie.
As I’m hanging up my editor’s hat (or should that be eye shade?)
on completion of this edition, a successor is being sought. So if you have
some writing skills and want to give it a go, contact me on
[email protected] or phone 5474 1978.
Thank you
contributors and supporters of airwaves – you were great. I sincerely
hope it continues. I think it’s a vital link that deserves more recognition
and support – it is intended to be informative as well as interesting, and
with more contributions it may even expand – yer never know. Just keep
all the articles, news, reviews, photos and letters rolling in. And
something I’d really like to see, is airwaves in colour. Are there any
sponsors out there willing to help with this?
Don’t forget to get to members’ meeting in time for your free
drink – looks like it could be a lively evening. And a really lively and fun
one’s coming up on the 12th with the 101.3 Christmas Party – get your
party frocks out gals!
On that note, I wish you all a very happy Christmas and new year. Ciao,
Christine.

I read “Airwaves”, then my sister Jack read
it and was enthralled by the article by Brian

pleased to hear of her new album out and will
look for it in our shops. A big thanks to

Congratulations
on
your
first
birthday (at the j). I would like to take
this opportunity to thank you all for the
opportunity to subscribe to the radio station
and to train to become a radio presenter.
Training to be a radio presenter on NCR
101.3fm has been a wonderful learning
experience for me: learning how to operate
all the equipment and the most challenging how to put a program together. To be able to
present a program that I feel people would
like to listen to, has been extremely
rewarding especially when listeners call in and
say how much they like the show.
I would like to thank you all for your
enthusiasm in running the Noosa Community
Radio station. Best Wishes, Linda Cooper.

Two elderly ladies were eating breakfast in a restaurant one morning,
when Ethel noticed something funny about Mabel’s ear and said,
“Mabel, do you know you’ve got a suppository in your left ear?” Mabel
replied: “I have a suppository in my ear?” She pulled it out and stared
at it. Then she said: “Ethel, I’m glad you saw this thing. Now I think I
know where to find my hearing aid.”
