TIDINGS April 2016 ST. JOHN’S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH ONLY ONE WORSHIP SERVICE on this day! May 1, 2016 9:00 a.m. Sanctuary “Church is not just a place to go, but a way of life” On May 1, we will, once again, celebrate “CHANGE THE WORLD” here at St. John’s. We will have only one combined service on this weekend. (There will be NO Jesus Country worship on Saturday, April 30) We will gather for a short worship service in the sanctuary at 9:00 a.m.. We will then disperse to the many areas of service that will be arranged for us in which to participate. Projects include a prayer walk around the neighborhood, work projects (such as landscaping and picking up trash), food packaging for kids, writing notes and letters to the homebound, and etc. There will be projects for all ages and all participants. Service for Christ is our worship for this day. On “Change the World Sunday,” we seek to make a life-changing difference by creating and participating in service or fundraising projects related to local and global needs. MAIN ENTRANCE DOOR DURING BUSINESS HOURS BEGINNING APRIL 4 Recently there have been many concerns about security at St. John’s. The Trustees in conjunction with Church Council have decided that during the weekly business hours, the main entrance will be the 14th street door. Everyone is asked to check into the main office after being buzzed into the building. Groups that are scheduled for activities who wish to make special arrangements to use the Perry Street door need to call the church office. ECO MINISTRIES PRESENTS: St John's Has Talent, Talent Show Your fellow St John's Family Members will be showing off their Talents. Enjoy singing, comedy and music.; a night of family entertainment. May our prayer life continue to give us renewed and new life! The PRAYER BOOKMARK is a part of the weekly bulletin. If you or a family member wants to be lifted in prayer on the bookmark and/or prayer chain, please call the church office at 3245278 or Janice Becker at 355-3981, and let us know of your wishes. You can also fill out a prayer card in your service and state if you want the request to be on the prayer bookmark or the prayer chain. The prayer chain is more private and includes a large variety of prayer concerns. It is important that we get permission to put the prayer request on the bookmark and/or chain. Some people want their prayer needs to be just between them and God. It is also appreciated when you let us know of changes in your prayer concern! FOUNDATION BIRTHDAYS The St. John's Foundation wishes to thank the following members for contributions to the Foundation Birthday Fund: Bob Border, Michelle Buser, Janet Carlton, Cindy Carpenter, Virginia Clingman, Gloria Faso, Walter Holcombe, Nancy Newton, Roger Waggoner, and Karen Weimer. FOOD PANTRY NEWS Sharon Imming, St. John’s Food Pantry Coordinator Happy Spring! I am sorry to say we did not meet our challenge for March. The goal was 250 and we received 224. So, our challenge for April is 250. St. John's you can do it. Bring one or two items or more to exceed our goal. Remember we have food to put on our table, some don't. We collected 13 boxes of mac & cheese, 36 individual pop tarts, 26 cans of soup, 16 sleeves of crackers along with 28 containers of baby food. This is just a few of the things we received. Watch your newspaper ads in the coming weeks. They have many good sale items. Last month, I gave you some interesting information about the Food Bank. Well, I received more information that I would like to share this month and coming months. What is River Bend Foodbank? River Bend Foodbank is a private nonprofit organization that collects, stores and redistributes surplus food to other charities that have feeding programs. The Foodbank has been serving the poor and needy from our own community since 1982. How much food does the food bank distribute annually? River Bend Foodbank is the largest hunger relief organization in the bi-state region with an annual distribution rate of 8 MILLION pounds of food. What is the difference between a foodbank and a food pantry? Food banks collect and handle very large quantities of food donations that a single food pantry or feeding program could not accept because of a lack of storage and handling capacity at their facilities. Hungry people obtain food directly through the food pantries and foodbanks serve as a critical source of food and other essentials to help them meet the needs of hungry people. More information in May Tidings. Remember Food Pantry Sunday is the THIRD Sunday of the month. You may bring items anytime during the month and leave them in the church office. Monetary donations are welcomed. Make your checks out to St. John's United Methodist Church and notate FOOD PANTRY. If you are not on our calling list, please call Dave Picht - 563-323-0676 to tell us you will be there, so we can have adequate seating set up. MISSIONS UPDATE GREEN TEAM Rev. Willie Trusheim, Missions Committee Coordinator Native American Offering, April 9 & 10 This offering will be received the second Sunday in April on the 9th & 10th. Native American needs are present across the U. S. A portion of the offering stays in Iowa Annual Conference. Another portion goes for scholarships for Indian people attending United Methodist Schools of Theology to be ministers to their own people. And a final portion of the offering goes to special needs in cities having special programs. Some areas of our country have concerns of poverty, education, and community problems. So our offering is important for spiritual and family issues. Our goal is for $250.00. An offering envelope will be in the bulletin for your gift. CHANGE THE WORLD SUNDAY! Change The World Sunday is May 1st this year. One of the projects is packaging food for Kids Against Hunger. Offerings received in January totaled $663.00. We want to raise $1,000 so we can package 4,000 meals. Each dollar provides 4 meals. 20% of the meals packaged stay local for food pantry needs. If you have not given yet or want to give more to reach the goal of $1,000 mark your gift and place it in the offering. Food pantry needs are increasing monthly. Food was provided for 13,000 people last year at The Center. Your gift is needed by April 24th. Thanks for your gift ! RAINBOW COVENANT GIVING! St. John's Rainbow Covenant giving in 2015 totaled $70,659.00. This was made possible by the faithful giving of our congregation. About $30,000 of the giving was for hunger related needs. About $12,000 is budgeted giving. Thank you for your generous and faithful giving every year! Creation Care Sunday and Blessing of the Animals—April 24, 2016 Happy Spring! The Green Team announces that on April 24, 2016, we will celebrate Creation Care Sunday at St. John’s. Creation Care Sunday is an opportunity around Earth Day to prayerfully ponder how God intended for us to take care of his creation. Our services for that day will be surrounding how we as Christians are tasked with caring for creation. This year the focus will be on caring for God’s creatures. Worship and music will honor this wonderful and necessary part of God’s plan for us! At 3:00 p.m. on April 24, in St. John’s parking lot, we will have a Blessing of the Animals service. We invite you to bring your four-legged friends for a short service and blessing. If you don’t have your own four-legged friend to bring, that’s okay too! We are excited that we will have animals from local animal shelters here also, and we will be blessing them. We hope they in turn get blessed by finding new homes! We are excited to have this opportunity to care for God’s creatures. Rain date for Blessing of the Animals will be on May 1st at 3:00 p.m. Please come join us at St. John’s that day for worship services, and the special Blessing of the Animals service. “We can judge the heart of any man by his treatment of animals.” - Immanuel Kent St. John’s Green Team—Shari and Rick Cole, Jeremy Hoppe, Sandy Macumber, Wendy Laude, Diana Bentley, and Rev. Anne Lippincott. Pastor Kwang’s Reflection It is prevalent for church to be considered a religious organization in a quite negative sense. However, church is not a building nor an organization. Church is the body of Christ, that is, the gathering of people who follow Christ’s teaching and Spirit. We have a beautiful and artistic sanctuary with stained glass. Personally, I love to sit in one of the pews and pray in silence. It is my favorite place to be alone. I love to worship with people there, too. However, we don’t consider the sanctuary as church. The sanctuary can be considered a part of the church as long as it represents something about the church. For instance, the stained glass is not the church, but as Rev. Anne mentioned about the meaning of them as she shared the DNA of St. John’s, they can be considered as a part of the church because they show who we are. They demonstrate that we are a creative, compassionate and Christian community striving to make disciples for the transformation of the world. We are one in Christ and we work together for the transformation of the world. And then we are considered as the church. On May 1st, we will practice “we are the church” by serving our community through mission projects. I hope that May 1st, “Change the World Sunday,” can become our day of being the church in our community. I would like you to pray for the projects we are planning and consider what you can do to help. I will distribute more detailed information about each project soon. Here are the projects we are planning for this year: Random Acts of Kindness, Community Prayer Walk, Neighborhood Prayer Walk, Kids Against Hunger, Homeless Kits, Community Clean-Up, Car Wash, Layettes Kits, Box of socks and slippers and Love for the Homebound. BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS Our Parish Nurse, Barb Beeks, will be doing blood pressure checks on April 9 and 10 after all the services. There is no cost for this service. All are welcome to participate! NOTE FROM THE PARISH NURSE Note from Barb Beeks, Parish Nurse This month I have chosen the topic of Anger. Anger from grief or other issues has a very negative effect on your psychological and physical health. When we are experiencing grief we really do go through a stage of anger. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross states that there are 5 stages of grief; Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. Not everyone will experience all of these stages, but it is important not to get stuck in the stage of anger. It can be said that an unforgiving heart is like taking poison and expecting someone else to die. The question might come up; "Is it okay to be angry with God?" Even Jesus, in his humanity, felt and displayed anger. But Jesus' anger was different. When Jesus got angry, He did not sin. His anger was always a righteous anger, an anger about that which angers the Father-sin. This kind of anger is better described as "righteous indignation." To answer this question, let's look at two passages about anger in the Bible: 1. In the Old Testament we read: Psalm 7:11 God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked everyday. 2. Psalm 45:7 Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness. Here God is angry with the wicked and hates wickedness. But these indicate anger toward sin. That's the only kind of righteous anger. While it is not okay to be angry with God or with His works, it is okay to bring problems, concerns, and situations- absolutely everything that angers us to God. In fact, God wants us to come to Him and lay our burdens at His feet. We should be quick to bring our feelings of anger to the Lord in prayer- asking with a humble and trusting heart for His direction and peace-with everything. When feelings of anger arise, turn to Him. Stretch out your hands and agree with the psalmist, who said: Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands to thy name." (Psalm 63:4) TRIOS! Third Sundays at 3!!! continues April 17 with “TRIOS.” Featuring a clarinet trio; trios for French horn, piano, and soprano, and other trios for your enjoyment. There will be art exhibits by The All Art Legacy League of Davenport, Father Catich art prints, and the art of Jane Doty. Doors will open at 2:00 p.m. As always, The Concert is FREE to all. 2016 EASTER LILIES Given by: In Memory of: Barbara Beeks Bob, Rob Beeks and Merlin Brubaker Jerry and Joanne Clemmens Parents: Harold and Dorothy Clemmens, Oscar Guyer, Netha Benninghoff, and our beloved Daughters: Katy Schluensen and Paula Egolf Shari and Rick Cole Forrest, Betty and Gary Ashcraft Verna Cudmore Husband: Keith Cudmore The Dvorak Family Our Lord and Savior Ron Freeman and Family Verna Freeman Dick and Karen Grimm Their Parents Rhea and Skip Hambright All their family and friends Hank, Alison, Lisa, and J.
