Parent Activity Title Parent Information Equivalent Fractions During the past few weeks, 4th grade mathematics classes learned about factors, multiples, and fractions. They also learned how to find common factors and multiples and use what they have learned to write equivalent fractions and fractions in simplest form. Along with this, they also learned how to estimate fraction amounts. You can expect to see in their assignment practice problems that they are required to work with factors, multiples, and fractions. Below is a sample of how your child has been taught to write equivalent fractions: Benchmark Objective MA.4.A.6.4 – Determine factors and multiples for specified whole numbers. MA.4.A.6.3 – Generate equivalent fractions and simplify fractions. MA.4.A.2.4 – Compare and order decimals, and estimate fraction and decimal amounts in real-world problems. Your child will learn how to find simplify and find equivalent fractions. Take away 3 of the 6 pieces. What fraction is left? Try to cover that amount with other fractional pieces to find another way to write the same amount. Have child create other equivalent fractions using the circles. Adapted from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt School Publishers www.thinkcentral.com Sample FCAT Question 14 of the team members are boys.
