Director‟s Notes
The Tempest is one of the last things Shakespeare
ever wrote, but it is presented first in the First Folio,
the earliest compilation of the Bard‟s work. It is
suggested that the playwright wrote it for the
engagement party of King James‟ daughter, and
was therefore done indoors in Whitehall theatre
with a great deal of special effects, spectacle, and
flash. We hope we have done it justice.
In our version, Prospero‟s slightly erratic behavior, indeed his entire plan
for his daughter, are all motivated by his impending death. He gives up
unimaginable power to ensure safety for his daughter through marriage,
because he knows he will not be there to look after her.
Thank you for attending tonight. Without an audience we would not be
able to do this, and that would be a waste of a fantastic bunch of students,
some truly dedicated parents, and a great script. Enjoy.
