Cool Ideas to Beat The
Summer Heat!
Temperatures in Shelby County during the summer can get
dangerously hot, but who wants to stay inside all day? We
came up with some ways where it
can be super cool to be outside!
Round up the neighborhood friends
for a massive water balloon fight
Be productive by washing your
parents’ cars
Get your parents to freeze toys in a
big block of ice then crack through
the ice to get to them
Money Tricks!
Money doubles by the “Rule of 72”
Want to figure out
how long it will take
for your money to
double? Divide the
interest rate into
72. For example, an
account earning 6%
interest will double
in twelve years (72
divided by 6 equals
12).
Make your own popsicles with your
favorite juice or drink
Freeze fruit like blueberries and
strawberries for an icy, tasty treat.
Break out a slip and slide, sprinkler
or kiddie pool for a day of splashing in the grass
Wet t-shirts and hats and then put them in the freezer between
wax paper. Once they’re frozen, you’ll definitely have some
cool threads!
Jump rope contests with full cups of water. The player with the
most water in the cup at the end wins!
Staying hydrated during extreme heat is very
important to your body and brain, so be sure
to drink plenty of water when playing outside
this summer even if you’re not thirsty. It’s
best to stay away from sugary drinks and caffeinated drinks which can cause dehydration.
Replenishing electrolytes such as salt, potassium, and calcium are necessary if you’ve
been exercising or exposed to heat for a long
period of time.

Grab Your Bike
and Go!
Did you know that Memphis is recognized
nationally as one of the most progressive biking
communities in the country? The Shelby Farms
Greenline is a 6.5 mile bike trail connecting
Midtown Memphis to Shelby Farms Park, the
largest park of its kind in the country. The trail
is an incredible community asset that provides
recreation, exercise, togetherness, healthy
activity, commuting and more. Soon bikers
will be able to take the Greenline all the way to
Downtown and across the Mississippi River via
the Harahan Bridge - cool!
How Are Credit Unions
Different from Banks?
A credit union might look just like a bank. It’s where
you go to do things like:
•
Open a checking account.
•
Apply for a credit card.
•
Use the ATM.
•
Get a car loan.
So what’s the key factor that sets credit unions apart
from banks? You are an owner!
When you join a credit union, you’re also a part owner, not just a customer. That’s because credit unions
are cooperatives.
Members elect fellow members to serve on the board
of directors, which sets credit union policies.
Since credit unions are not-for-profit businesses,
and their board members are almost entirely unpaid
volunteers, they have a lower cost of doing business.
They are also exempt from certain types of taxes.
Credit Union members benefit in many ways:
Higher dividends. Your credit union passes the
savings on to you by paying you a higher dividend on
checking and savings accounts
Lower fees. Credit unions have no or low ATM fees,
lower service charges on checking accounts, and
lower fees for overdrawn checks.
Extra attention. Credit unions watch out for their
members and often share ideas on how to manage
money. It’s people helping people.
