Auditor’s Sale brings in nearly 10
times more than last year’s event
Second annual auction sells 80 parcels compared to just 34 during 2015 sale
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Sept. 20, 2016) – Franklin County Auditor Clarence Mingo today
announced that 80 of the 83 properties at last month’s second annual Auditor’s Sale were sold
for a total of $271,642.
The same event last year sold 34 properties for $28,219. A property this year sold for $45,000. In
fact, there were six properties sold this year for more than last year’s highest sale of $12,000.
“This is good news for everyone in Franklin County,” Mingo said. “We do this to help not only
improve properties and neighborhoods but also to strengthen the county’s tax base.”
The 83 properties for sale last month had more than $1.1 million in delinquent property taxes.
The sold properties at the 2016 event will bring in $49,226.05 alone in property taxes next year.
Bids were opened for either the lesser of the fair market value or the taxes due.
The purpose of the Auditor’s Sale is to sell the forfeited parcels to owners who will then pay the
property tax going forward and return the properties to revenue-generating parcels for the people
of Franklin County.
“These are properties that would otherwise remain vacant,” Mingo said. “Now with responsible
ownership, property taxes will once again be paid and people throughout the county will see
those needed improvements.”
Bargain hunters also had a field day during the forfeited land sale. People bought 37 properties
for $500 or less. Six properties were sold for $100 or less. One property sold for $1.
The county auditor is the selling agent for the state. He is required by law to maintain a list of
forfeited properties seized due to nonpayment of real estate taxes. The county auditor is
authorized to offer the forfeited properties for sale to the public.
