Robe NARACOORTE CAVES BLUE LAKE MARY MACKILLOP INTERPRETIVE CENTRE Naracoorte Caves National Park is South Australia’s only World Heritage site. The site was officially recognised in 1994 because of the importance of the fossils in the caves. The park is home to over 100 known fossil deposits, preserving the bones of megafauna that became extinct roughly 60,000 years ago. Naracoorte Caves preserves Australia’s most complete fossil record for the past 500,000 years. There are a variety of tours and tour durations available to match the diversity of the visitors. The Blue Lake is a unique natural phenomenon that turns from a grey colour to a vibrant blue that has to be seen to be believed and this is also the local water source for the region. Take the aquifer tour and travel down the original well in a glass elevator and explore the original pump room and make your way out on to a viewing platform. Mary MacKillop was canonised on 17 October 2010 in Rome. She became Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Australia’s first saint of the Catholic Church. She met Father Julian Tenison Woods in Penola in 1860 and their dream began to found a new religious order to meet the educational needs of isolated and disadvantaged children. She started teaching in a stable and then moved to the Schoolhouse, which today is a heritage building; join our volunteers to learn more. www.environment.sa.gov.au/naracoorte/home www.aquifertours.com www.southaustralia.com UMPHERSTON SINKHOLE www.mackilloppenola.org.au Umpherston Sinkhole, also known as The Sunken Garden was once a cave formed through dissolution of the limestone. The sinkhole was created when the top of the chamber collapsed downwards. Now the topsoil down on the floor of the cave forms the perfect environment for the sunken garden. Originally beautified by James Umpherston around 1886, the sinkhole gardens are now open to the general public. www.southaustralia.com 28 Above from left: Lake Butler, Robe; Blue Lake Lookout Platform, Mount Gambier.
