This booklet will help you find the
best ticket for your journey along
with the prices.
Please note that you must always have
a valid ticket or a validated smartcard
when you travel on Metro. Our
customer service staff are at stations
and on trains to check tickets. If you
don’t have a valid ticket or a validated
smartcard for your journey you may be
issued with a £20 Penalty Fare Notice
and be liable for prosecution.

Pop Pay As You Go
Pay As You Go
Pop Pay As You Go (PAYG) is the brand new and
exciting way to pay for public transport in North East
England. Pop PAYG is cheaper than adult single and
DaySaver tickets. Simply top up your Pop PAYG card
and pay for your journeys as you make them.
Pay As You Go on Metro
You can travel as many times as you like in one day.
You are charged each time you travel until you reach
the daily price cap for the number of zones you’ve
travelled in.
The price depends on the number of zones you travel
in – see map on the back cover.

Pay As You Go on Bus and Ferry
You can also use Pop PAYG to pay for travel on
selected bus services and the Shields Ferry.

How to buy
First you’ll need to buy a Pop PAYG card from any
Nexus TravelShop or selected Payzone stores. A Pop
PAYG card costs £5.
Once you have your Pop PAYG card you can register
it online for a Pop Shop account at popcard.org.uk.
You can top your Pop PAYG card up to a maximum
balance of £90. Top it up:

• At any Metro station ticket machine
• At a Nexus TravelShop
• At selected Payzone stores. Find your

This ticket can be used at any time of the day
and gives you unlimited travel depending
on the zone(s) you choose – see the map on
the back cover. An all zones DaySaver is also
valid on the Shields Ferry and local rail services

You can use this ticket for journeys on Metro.
It’s valid for one continuous journey and for
90 minutes from buying your ticket. An all
zones single is also valid on the Shields Ferry
and local rail services between Newcastle
and Sunderland.

Commuters and
frequent users
MetroSaver
A MetroSaver can be used all day in your chosen zones
and is superb value if you are a regular Metro user.
An all zones MetroSaver is also valid on the Shields
Ferry and local rail services between Newcastle and
Sunderland. A MetroSaver which includes Zone A
can be used on Quaylink buses in the Quaylink
Central Zone.*

Corporate MetroSaver
The Corporate MetroSaver is available to local
employers who can obtain discounts on behalf
of their staff (no minimum purchase). The Corporate
MetroSaver is an annual all zones ticket and is
also valid on the Shields Ferry, Quaylink buses in
the Quaylink Central Zone* and local rail services
between Newcastle and Sunderland.

Metro Business Pass
With an annual Metro Business Pass your staff
can travel anywhere on the Metro system between
9.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Metro Business
Passes are also valid on the Shields Ferry, Quaylink
buses in the Quaylink Central Zone* and local rail
services between Newcastle and Sunderland.
Because the Metro Business Pass is linked to
a company rather than an in individual, it is
transferable amongst all your employees.

Students and young people
16-18 MetroSaver
A 16-18 MetroSaver is valid on the Metro, Shields
Ferry and local rail services between Newcastle
and Sunderland, as well as Quaylink buses in the
Quaylink Central Zone.*
This ticket gives you at least 60% discount off the price
of a standard MetroSaver. To be eligible, you must be
aged 16 or 17 years old on 31 August 2015.
You can get a ticket for either one or four weeks.

How to buy
First you’ll need to apply for your FREE Pop card at
popcard.org.uk as this is what your 16-18 MetroSaver
will be loaded on to. You’ll need to upload a photo online.
You don’t need proof of age to get a Pop card.

TravelShop along with proof that you were aged 16
or 17 on 31 August 2015, and staff will activate your
16-18 discount.

Network One Travel Tickets
If you frequently use the bus as well as the Metro,
Network One Travel Tickets are available for
unlimited travel in Tyne and Wear on all forms
of transport.

Transfares
A Transfare ticket is for when your single journey
includes travelling on more than one type of
transport, e.g. Metro and bus.
Transfares allow you to buy one ticket for your
journey on public transport. You must start the
second part of your journey within 90 minutes of
buying your ticket.

Day Rover
This all day ticket is valid for unlimited travel on
all forms of public transport in Tyne and Wear,
including Metro, bus*, local rail services between
Sunderland and Blaydon, and the Shields Ferry.
Day Rover tickets are priced at £7.00 (child £3.90)
and are ideal for days out using different forms of
transport all day long.

Children
Children under five
All children under five must be accompanied
by an adult. Children aged under five travel
free on all public transport in Tyne and Wear.
Child fares
Children who live in Tyne and Wear, and are aged
between 5 -15 on 31 August before the start of the
current academic year, are entitled to an Under 16
Pop card. This lets them travel in Tyne and Wear at
concessionary child fares.

Under 16 Pop card application forms are available

Children aged 5-15 who don’t have an Under 16 Pop
card should buy the commercial single ticket for 80p
or a Child DaySaver, which gives all day unlimited
Metro travel for £1.20. With all tickets you may be
asked for proof of age.

Class and Youth Group
Metro Pass
Valid for travel on the whole Metro system and
Shields Ferry for groups of up to 40 (including
sixth formers, under 16s and community youth
groups aged 18 and under) and up to ten
accompanying adults after 9.00am.
We recommend, for supervision purposes,
a ratio of one adult for every four children
travelling in a group.

Concessionary Travel
Concessionary
Travel on Metro
If you have a Concessionary Travel Pass (CT Pass),
you can buy a Metro Gold Card which gives you
a year’s travel on Metro, the Shields Ferry and on
Northern Rail services between Newcastle and
Sunderland. It’s just £12 a year if you live in Tyne
and Wear and £25 if you don’t.
A Metro Gold Card is valid for travel after 9.30am
Monday to Friday and all day on weekends and
public holidays.

Your Metro Gold Card will be loaded onto your
Concessionary Travel Pass. You can buy or renew

Refunds for four week and annual MetroSavers
Refunds are available on all four week and annual
MetroSavers for unused future travel. Refunds will
be given on the number of full travel days which
are unused from the date the ticket is received by
Nexus. An administration fee of £2.50 for a four
week MetroSaver and £10 for an annual MetroSaver
is payable in all cases. Replacement tickets are
non-refundable.
Safety on Metro
All Metro stations are monitored 24 hours a day
by digital CCTV cameras. Over 550 cameras cover
the entire Metro network, including platforms,
station approaches, subways and car parks.

What if I lose my Pop card?
If you lose your Pop card go to nexus.org.uk/pop
to find out how to replace it. Information about
replacing your season ticket (for which a fee may
be payable) is there too.

Dogs can travel free on Metro.
Carriage of bikes
Only folding bikes are allowed on the Metro
system and must be fully folded while on Metro
property. Some folding bikes should also be placed
