‘What colour is your helmet?’
Picture graph learning experiences
EDUCATORS’ NOTES
Use the poster ‘What colour is your helmet?’ to engage 3 to 5 year olds in a variety of picture
graph data collection learning experiences.
• Photocopy the coloured helmet pictures
below or the white helmets on the following
page so that children can colour them
according to the colour of their own helmet
(blue, red, green, yellow, purple or other). Ask
children to place their helmet pictures in the
corresponding squares on the picture graph in
the included poster.
• After children have placed their helmet
pictures on the graph, jointly count how many
children have helmets of a particular colour.
Compare the results, encouraging children to
describe them using mathematical vocabulary
such as ‘most’ and ‘fewest/least’.
• Ask children to bring in their helmets and
photograph each child safely wearing it. Place
each child’s photograph on the poster.
• Talk with children about the Kids and Traffic
Key Safe Play Message, ‘Always wear your
helmet when riding your bike or wheeled
toy’, as they participate in these learning
experiences.
• As an extension idea, set up a range of
different types of helmets for children to use
in role play e.g. fire fighter helmet, police
rescue helmet, construction hat, motorbike
helmet and bicycle helmet. This experience
can help children understand why other
people in their local community need to wear
helmets too (EYLF Outcome 2: ‘Educators
can promote this learning when they build
connections between the early childhood
setting and the local community’).
• Take photographs of places where it is safe
for children to ride and play in your local
community (e.g. safe bike tracks in parks
away from any roads; fenced play areas).
Then place this information for families around
the poster and include names of these places
at the bottom of the poster.

Important messages for parents and carers of young children!
 Make sure your child’s helmet meets the Australian standards.
Helmets must stay securely in place. Straps need to sit flat without twists and
fasten snugly under the chin.

To fit properly, a helmet should be worn two child finger widths above the
eyebrows so that it sits about half-way down the forehead.

Photocopy this page of helmets so that children can colour them according to the
colour of their own helmet. Then ask children to place their coloured helmet pictures
in the corresponding squares on the picture graph in the Kids and Traffic
poster. Refer to the Educators’ Notes on the back of this page for more safe play
learning experience ideas. Use opportunities such as these to talk with children about
the Kids and Traffic Key Safe Play Message,
‘Always wear your helmet when riding your bike or wheeled toy’
