symbolic of the manv-faceted. environment of the university life.
Academic Costrnne and Regalia
Academic regaLia represent traditions which come dou.n from. the .'VIiddle A.ges. iclien
European universities u.ere institutions of the "hurch. At that time, robes u ere a common
form of dress, particularly for officiaLs of church and state. The cut of the robe. its
adornment, and the colors used comprised a specialized heraldry that conveyed the rank
and station of the wearer. At the universities, both faculty and students were cunsidered
to be part of the church hierarchy and were expected to wear the prescribed gouns. As
society mot.ed toward more modem forms of dress, onlv rovaltv; clergy, judges, and
academics retained the traditional regalia, reserving it only for ceremonial use.
Modem academic regalia retain some of the svmbols of the earlier [orms of ceremonial
dress. The gOIW tends to be fullest, longest, and heauiest for the doctoral degree. The
sleeves for the bachelor's and master's gOLL'm gre typically open at the wrist. Cuf]« are
more common on the doctoral gown, and its sleeces are adorned by three celret strips,
symbolic of the degree. The mantle worn about the shoulders, called the hood, is the
remnant offunctional headgear uorn for warmth in the unheated classrooms of medieval
universities. Today its colors refer to the school that granted the degree and the lere! or
discipline of the degree ie.g., navy blue for Ph.D., pinkfor music).
The usual colorfor academic gOIWS in the United States is black. Hou.eccr; almost three
dozen universities i~ this country and many others throughout the icorld hace adopted
more colorful robes. In general, this practice has been limited to schools more than one
hundred years old: Among the schools represented by colorful robes at commencement
ceremonies are Boston CoLlege, Brmcn, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth. Duke, Harrard.
.YeLe York. Oxford, Princ~torz, Rutgers, Stanford, 7hfis, and Yale L'nirersities. and the

Queen Silvia of Sweden
Recipient of the Chancellor's
Medal for Distinguished Service
Queen Silvia of Sweden was born in Heidelberg, West Germany, and grew up in West
Germany and in Brazil, where her father directed the Brazilian subsidiary of the
Swedish Uddeholm steel company. She matriculated at Dusseldorf University, and then
attended the Munich School of Interpreting, from which she received a Diploma in
Spanish. Between 1971 and 1973 she served as a chief hostess on the Organizing
Committee for the Munich Olympics, and in 1973 she became deputy head of protocol
of the Organizing Committee for the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. It was at
the 1972 Olympics that she met the future king of Sweden; she married King Carl XVI
Gustav in 1976.
Queen Silvia often joins King Carl Gustav on official tours in Sweden and abroad,
where her command of six languages is much appreciated. She is particularly
interested in social and educational questions, and is a regular visitor; and an
assiduous information-gatherer, at national and local agencies, institutes, schools, and
universities. She works actively for the disabled, supporting research on sports and
games and sponsoring the book Kom Igen! (Gofor It!), published in Swedish, English,
German, and Spanish to encourage athletic activity among young people with
disabilities. 'I() improve her ability to communicate with the hearing-impaired, she is
learning sign language. In 1990 she was awarded the Deutsche Kulturpreis for her
efforts on behalf of the disabled.
Queen Silvia is an honorary member and indispensable friend of numerous organizations,
such as the Swedish Save the Children Fund and Mentor, an international organization
aiming to combat drug abuse worldwide. In recent years she has become an outspoken
and courageous opponent of the commercial sexual exploitation of children. As the
Patron of the World Congress Against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, an
unprecedented top-level international gathering of governments, United Nations
agencies, Interpol, non-governmental organizations, and individuals, the Queen gave a
closing address that was a clarion call to prompt, forceful, and humane action.
We honor Queen Silvia of Sweden for the effectiveness with which she meets the
countless responsibilities her country places upon her; and for the warmth of her
concern for, and kinship with, all humankind.
Sidney Fine
Doctor of Laws
Sidney Fine graduated first in his class from Western Reserve University in his native
Ohio, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in history in 1942. He was awarded a master
of arts degree in 1944 (in absentia, while serving in the navy), and a Ph.D. in history in
1948, both from the University of Michigan. In his remarkable academic career, he has
taught generations of students at that University over nearly fifty years. In 1974 he was
appointed the Andrew Dickson White Distinguished Professor of History at the
University of Michigan, the post he still holds.
Sidney Fine shares, with a handful of other modern historians, the credit for
establishing labor history as an important field of study. He has been, as well, one of
the important contributors to our understanding of the New Deal, and of the role of
government in our history. His books include, among others, two volumes on
controversial issues in U.S. history, The American Past (first published in 1961), and
Recent America (first published in 1962); Sit-Down: The General Motors Strike of
1936-37 (1969); a three-volume biography of Detroit mayor and Miehigan governor
Frank Murphy (1975, 1979, 1984); and Violence in the Model City: The Cavanagh
Administration, Race Relations, and the Detroit Riot of 1967 (1989).
Among his many awards and distinctions, Professor Fine has been president of the
Organization of American Historians and has served on the editorial boards of several
professional journals. He has received four University of Michigan Press Book Awards,
and in 1986 was chosen as the State of Michigan Professor of the Year.
In honoring Sidney Fine, we acknowledge the progressive spirit he has brought to the
historian's role: as a teacher and scholar; as an interpreter of ourselves to ourselves,
and as a pioneer who has helped situate labor history in the mainstream of American
historical studies.

J. Donald Monan, SJ.
Doctor of Laws
Born in Blasdell, New York, J. Donald Monan entered the New York Province of the
Society of Jesus in 1942. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Vioodstock
College in 1948, was ordained as a priest in 1955, and in 1959 earned a Ph.D. at the
University of Louvain in Belgium. He held faculty and administrative appointments at
St. Peter's College and LeMoyne College, before acceding to the presidency of Boston
College in 1972.
Under his twenty-four years of leadership, Boston College has thrived. He established a
long-term financial plan for a nearly insolvent institution, and sought national
academic stature for it as a distinctly Catholic and Jesuit school committed to the
moral and ethical development of its students. He oversaw the building of new
academic, residential, and athletic facilities, When he left the presidency to become
the school's first chancellor, BosLon College had become one of the nation's most
prominent universities.
As Boston College achieved national prominence, so did its leader: Father Monan was
one of the delegates who met with Pope John Paul II to help prepare the 1990 papal
document on Roman Catholic higher education. He has served on boards of directors
for, among many others, Georgetown University and the Institute for European Studies.
At home, he has been active in affirming ties between the College and the city through
such efforts as the Greater Boston One to One mentoring program. And outside the
academic setting he has continued to champion the Jesuit commitment to social
justice, as in his support of human rights during the war in EI Salvador:
We honor Father J. Donald Monan for his conviction that a life in higher education can
also mean a life of service, learning, and spiritual and social commitment. He has
shown us that leadership of a distinguished university can also mean leadership in the
community and the nation.
Lynn Sherr
Doctor of Laws
Lynn Sherr, who was born in Philadelphia and earned her B.A. from Wellesley in 1963,
is one of the most distinguished television journalists of our time. She began her career
as a writer for Conde Nast Publications and the Associated Press during the 1960s and
early 1970s; she then became a television correspondent based in :\lew York City, first
for WCBS-TV and later for W'iET-TV She became a host of television programs for the
Public Broadcasting System in 1975, and a correspondent for ABC News in 1977. In
1986 she joined the staff of ABC's "20/20."
As a "20/20" correspondent, Ms. Sherr has covered a wide range of stories,
specializing in women's issues and in the effects of social change on people's lives.
Recent examples include an examination of differences in the ways men and women
communicate in the workplace; an examination of the movement to make English our
official language; and an investigation into a military cover-up during the Gulf War.
Among her recent honors are a George Foster Peabody Award for a report on anorexia
and bulimia; a National Headliner Award for a report on a highlv experimental form of
open womb surgery; and a Silver Screen Award for a reporL on a young man who had
revealed to his family that he had AIDS.
Ms. Sherr is also the author of Failure is Impossible: Susan B. Anthony in Her Own
Words, and the co-author of Susan B. Anthony Slept Here: A Guide to American Women's
Landmarks and ten editions of The Women's Calendar.
We honor Lynn Sherr for her extraordinary achievements as a reporter and analyst of
the events and trends of contemporary America. We honor her as well for her deep
engagement with the moral substance of those events and trends-for her exemplary
use of professional abilities for the common good.

Donna Summer
Doctor of Fine Arts
Donna Summer was born in Roxbury. She was singing in church choirs by the time she
was ten, inspired by gospel music and the great gospel voice of Mahalia Jackson. At
eighteen she moved to New York City to pursue a career in entertainment.
Early on, she got involved in musical theater; and made a name for herself in Europe,
where she played in the German and Austrian productions of Hair. Her versatility
landed her a role in Porgy and Bess at the Vienna Folk Opera. Back in Germany, she
began doing studio work for pop records and demos, and displayed a gift for song
writing as well as performing. Soon her creative collaboration with producers Giorgio
Moroder and Pete Bellotte started turning out the songs that would become
international emblems of the mid-seventies disco era. A string of number one hits led
to a different pinnacle, when her recording of "Last Dance" won the Oscar for best
movie theme in the film Thank God It's Friday.
Since those days, the time of disco has passed, but the Donna Summer season is still in
full bloom. Showing another aspect of her creative energy, she has exhibited many of
her sketches and paintings. She has continued to perform and record, and to
collaborate with such artists as Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian. As to whether the
"Queen of Disco" still rules, a 1996 New York Times concert review tells us that she
"sang...as if her reign ...had never come to an end.... Her powers...were extraordinary."
In honoring Donna Summer; we recognize the talent and accomplishments of an artist
we are proud to claim as one of our own, someone who has taken her music from a
Boston neighborhood to the world, and distinguished herself as a durable and
international star performer.
William O. Taylor
Doctor of Laws
A native Bostonian and a 19.54 graduate of Harvard, William O. Taylor is chairman of
the board, chief executive officer, and a director of Globe Newspaper Co., which
publishes The Boston Globe, New England's largest daily newspaper.
M,: Taylor joined the Globe in 1956, after serving two years in the C.S. Army. He
became publisher in 1978. lnder his guidance, the Globe has significantly expanded
its activities-for example, by launching an on-line information service-while
strengthening its financial position and maintaining the high editorial standards that
have established its reputation as one of America's great metropolitan newspapers.
Mr. Taylor's community activities are numerous and wide-ranging: he is president of
the Board of Trustees of the Boston Public Library; a trustee of the Boston Public
Library Foundation, Connecticut College, and the Museum of Fine Arts; a director of
the Boston Adult Literacy Fund, Harvard Magazine, the United Way of New England,
the United Way of America, the Center for Foreign Journalists, and the International
Crisis Group; a Boston director of the Federal Reserve Bank; and chairman of the
Freedom Trail Foundation and the USS Constitution Foundation.
LMass Boston is particularly indebted to Mr. Taylor, both for his support of the Taylor
Outstanding Scholars Program, which thus far has awarded 176 scholarships to
exceptional graduates of Boston public schools, and also for the wise counsel he offers
as a member of the University's Great Cities Advisory Board.
In honoring William O. Taylor we recognize a leader whose business acumen has
sustained a vital institution that helps to sustain Boston itself, and whose countless
services to his city and state make him a model of enlightened citizenship.

Mo Vaughn
Doctor of Laws
Maurice Samuel Vaughn grew up in Norwalk, Connecticut, and received his college
education at Seton Hall University. He began playing for the Boston Red Sox in 1991.
In a sport with no shortage of exceptional players, Mo Vaughn stands out. Since he
became Boston's starting first baseman during the 1992 season, his career has
developed rapidly. In 1995, he was named the American League's Most Valuable
Player, as he led the Red Sox to a division title, and in 1996 his accomplishments at
the plate surpassed those of 1995. He is a slugger with a happy tendency to produce
home runs when they are most needed, a team leader, and a favorite with Boston fans.
While Mo Vaughn is truly one of baseball's heavy hitters, he has compiled an even
more impressive record beyond Fenway Park. For him the Boston area is not just his
work site, but his home; and he has become a major force in the neighborhoods of his
adopted city. In 1994 he and two friends founded the Mo Vaughn Youth Development
Program in Dorchester. He continues to take an active part in this program for city
teenagers, which emphasizes academic work, self-discipline, and self-esteem. With
the same determination to "enhance young minds," as he says, he regularly visits a
Mattapan elementary school and leads groups of young people on trips to such cultural
centers as the Boston Public Library. As a black major leaguer conscious of both
history and social responsibility, he has more than earned the right to wear the number
on his Red Sox uniform-Jackie Robinson's number 42.
We honor Mo Vaughn, the consummate athlete-citizen. He has enriched our city with a
caring for young people so strong as to buoy all our hopes. He reminds us that the
drama of the playing field has wider meanings, that admiration for the star athlete is
something widely shared-a bonding for the body politic both innocent and profound.
