EDITOR'S NOTE
In the course of mulling over a worthwhile message suitable
to the present Christmas season we, as a m atter of course, checked
back to see what was written last year. This was a mistake as far
as the search for something new went.
The thought occurred th a t one's opinions on Christmas are
pretty well fixed and th a t there is little point in expressing the
same opinion in rearranged words, just for the sake of novelty. We
note this so th a t anyone finding the words fam iliar will not immed
iately conclude we ore victims of th a t well-known writer's disease,
infatuation with the sound of one's own words.

THE REAL GIFT OF CHRISTMAS
The ways in which we outwardly observe the birthday of Christ
Jesus vary greatly, by religious training, by family background and
by economic circumstances. Inwardly, all Christians find the same
renewed uplifting of spirit, inspired by the glorious promise of that
first Christmas which brought to all the means of finding peace
on earth and good will to men.
This uplifting of the spirit and opening of the heart to others
in brotherly love is a partial fulfillment of the promise of th a t first
Christmas. We also are given to feel th a t the promise con and will
come to complete fulfillment, for the spirit let into our hearts a t
this season can be extended throughout the year. This fulfillment
is both within our power and within us ourselves.
May the renewal of these feelings find an even deeper and
more perm anent place in the hearts of us all. In the observance of
this birthday of the Saviour let us renew the sense of faith, hope,
courage and spirituol inspiration th a t was God's present to us all
on th a t day long ago.
It is our fervent hope th at the spirit and meaning of Christmas
will reach into every home on the North Fork, bringing all the joy,
warmth and faith it affords.

The text for Mr. Howard’s Christmas
sermon is from the Epistle to the
Hebrews: "God who at sundry times
and in divers manners spake In time
past unto the fathers by the prophets,
hath in these last days spoken unto us
by his Son . . . ” (1:1)
W hat God had been doing to reveal
Himself before—however satisfying and
useful it may have seemed—He now
is pleased to accomplish In a new way.
He is “getting down to earth”.
This Is Christmas. Let us use it as a
new opportunity to fill all the earth
with the glory of God Incarnate, and
to bring light to all people th a t sit in
darkness.
