SAMI portables will
relocate to the Camp
6 Logging Museum
site this summer.
The urgency of Metro Parks' Waterfront Phase 1 project has increased the need to
relocate SAMI portable classrooms from the Triangle. Metro Parks and Tacoma
Public Schools favor moving the portables to the former Camp 6 Logging Museum
site.
After a shareduse environmental learning center opens at the Point Defiance Zoo
& Aquarium in the 20162017 school year, phaseout of the portables from the
former Camp 6 can begin. The park and school districts will continue to look for
environmental education opportunities during the detail planning phase. Tacoma Public Schools has a longstanding commitment with Metro Parks to use
Point Defiance Park as an outdoor classroom. The SAMI experience in the park is
part of our students' education and its success shows by our 98 percent
graduation rate.

Tacoma Public Schools Rebids Wilson High School
Improvement Project
The Tacoma Public Schools Planning and Construction team is working hard to
stay on schedule and budget for the improvement construction project for Wilson
High School.
On May 21, the Planning & Construction team reviewed bid proposals and
received the lowest bid for nearly $6 million, or 17%, over the project's budget.
With five projects currently under bid or construction and seven projects slated
over the next decade, the district's Planning & Construction department has
decided to rebid the project and open bids July 23, in hopes for a more efficient
outcome.
The amount of construction work available for Tacoma Public Schools, along with
the construction projects in the Pacific Northwest, has not only increased the
demand in the construction market but has also reduced the amount of contractors
and subcontractors available for current construction projects.
The Wilson High School campus has been built in many stages to meet the needs
of the educational programs over the past several years. The current project will
upgrade various buildings at the school, modernize systems, further consolidate
the campus, complete the fields' upgrades and make entries and plazas more
inviting.
The district is making a conscience effort to be fiscally responsible while also
committing to the project's goals and timeline. Through this process, the district's
Planning & Construction department will identify areas for consideration and
prioritize the various scopes of work for future consideration based upon upcoming
bid proposals.

Future students break ground at Wainwright
The forecast showed overcast and rain for June 3, but the sun peeked out just in
time for second graders from Whittier Elementary School to suit up with hard hats
and vests and use red shovels to break ground for their future intermediate school.
The Foundation For Tacoma Students, DLR Group Architects along with Tacoma
Public Schools coordinated the groundbreaking celebration for the new Wainwright
Intermediate School at 130 Alameda Ave., Fircrest.
Tacoma Public Schools will replace Wainwright Elementary School with a fourth
through eighthgrade school in September 2016, potentially one year earlier than
planned. Wainwright, previously a traditional kindergarten through fifthgrade
elementary school, is one of 14 schools scheduled for replacement thanks to the
$500 million bond issue voters approved in February 2013.
To pair with the new Wainwright, nearby Whittier Elementary School will shift to a
preschool through thirdgrade school. By restructuring grade levels at the two
nearby schools, students from Fircrest and the surrounding area will have a
seamless transition from preschool through the eighth grade.
Construction at Wainwright will start lateJuly.

Moving Day is
Here!
Moving day for Stewart
and McCarver schools is
underway! Movers packed, moved,
delivered and installed
more than 9,800 library
books and 4,000 textbooks
from Stewart Middle
School. In addition, 20
classrooms, 1,240 boxes
and 1,290 furniture and
equipment items were
moved from Stewart to
Hunt where students will attend school temporarily while their neighborhood school
is under construction.
At McCarver movers packed more than 9,600 library books, 2,500 textbooks,
1,160 boxes and 600 furniture and equipment items and delivered them to
McKinley. They also moved three classrooms for support staff to the McCarver
Primary building.
Teachers and staff members filled boxes and packed their classrooms and offices
weeks before the last day of school in preparation for the movers. Boush Moving Company from Puyallup is coordinating the logistical move from
Stewart to the Hunt, while Olympic Moving & Storage from Olympia will move
McCarver to McKinley from June 15 through July 3. McCarver Elementary
School students, parents and
staff toured McKinley June 4
to get a glimpse of the
school. McKinley will be
McCarver second through
fifth grade students'
temporary school for one
year while McCarver is under
construction.
Students walked the halls
with their parents to see
where their classrooms will
be next school year and
familiarize themselves with
the school's layout. Some students and parents
said McKinley's school
condition looks better than
McCarver's school building.
We'll have to wait and see
after construction is
complete in 2016.
Construction starts July.
